There is unrest on so many different continents.  I wonder when we are next?

That's what I'm saying. 

It will not become "real" to U.S. citizens until it is in their back yard.  That's why we are so used to everything that is going on today (distant wars, distant unrest, distant famine, distant financial collapse), it's because it is all happening to OTHER countries.  If we were to have any of those problems on a regular basis in the U.S., I think it would be a completely different story when it comes to people being "awake."
