Explosion in Antarctic sea ice levels may cause another ice age
By Chris Ciaccia | Fox News

Upside-down "rivers" of warm ocean water may be one of the causes of Antarctica's ice shelves breaking up, leading to a rise in sea levels. But a new study suggests an increase in sea ice may lead to a much more devastating change in the Earth's climate — another ice age.

Using computer simulations, the research suggests that an increase in sea ice could significantly alter the circulation of the ocean, ultimately leading to a reverse greenhouse effect as carbon dioxide levels in the ocean increase and levels in the air decrease.

“One key question in the field is still what caused the Earth to periodically cycle in and out of ice ages,” University of Chicago professor and the study's co-author, Malte Jansen, said in a statement. “We are pretty confident that the carbon balance between the atmosphere and ocean must have changed, but we don’t quite know how or why."

The last major ice age ended at the end of the Pleistocene era, about 2.5 million years ago, as glaciers have periodically grown and then gotten smaller. Researchers believe that changes to the Earth's orbit may be partly responsible for some of the Earth's cooling, but additional factors have likely played a part, Jensen added.

“The most plausible explanation is that there was some change in how carbon was divided between the atmosphere and the ocean,” Jansen continued. “There’s no shortage of ideas about how this happens, but it’s not quite clear how they all fit together.”

Researchers also believe a mini-ice age may have occurred roughly 12,800 years ago. It likely stems from an asteroid impact that "rocked the Northern Hemisphere" and led to the Younger Dryas climate event.

Jansen pointed out that the Southern Ocean around Antarctica "plays a key role in ocean circulation" due to the deep waters in the region, leading it to have "outsize[d] consequences."

“What this suggests is that it’s a feedback loop,” said the study's lead author, Alice Marzocchi. “As the temperature drops, less carbon is released into the atmosphere, which triggers more cooling.”

“What surprised me is how much of this increased storage can be attributed to physical changes alone, with Antarctic sea-ice cover being the key player,” Marzocchi added, noting that future study of the ocean and the role it plays in the carbon cycle can help simulate "future environmental change.”

The research has been published in the scientific journal Nature Geoscience.

Funny that this topic has come up.  I just started reading a book titled "Cold Times: Preparing for the Mini Ice Age" by Anita Bailey, PhD.  So far it's well written, and it goes into detail how to cope with a long term cooling period.  Shelter and food are going to be major concerns.  The author says the change will happen relatively quick, like less than a decade.  It would be interesting how this would change where population centers are located, and populations would cope.

I read the article that nemo posted. Whoever writes that stuff are masters at making half assed statements sound official and 100% genuine. The last Ice age, the one they called the last mini Ice Age, started to recede about 15,000 years ago but started coming back again. Then it started to retreat again about 12,000 years ago and was gone by 9,000 years ago. There have been several "Mini Ice Ages" and they were not of the magnitude of the last Ice age. There was a so called mini ice age going on during the American Revolutionary War and another that caused the Irish Potato Famine in Europe. The mini ice ages are actually pretty short in duration. The one's I know of lasted about 5 years. With all that said, when I was studying Geology as a hobby, I had a bunch of friends who where full blown real Geologists and they all told me waaaaay back in the late 1960's that we should expect another Ice Age in the future. They weren't talking about those little pip squeak mini ice ages either. When all the Global Warming morons started running off at the mouth because a Masters student in Ohio wrote his thesis about the possibility of there being a problem with the Ozone Holes surfaced, they went all Henny Penny and started the Global Warming crap. Little did they know, we need all the Carbon Dioxide we can get to hold off the coming Ice Age.

Sorry for the rant, but every time I hear mention of this sort of thing, it lights my fuse.

No need to be sorry. I whole hardily agree with you.

I went to a breakfast this morning with a group of amateur radio operators.  One of the discussion topics was climate change and how global warming is simply a government tool to redistribute wealth.  The group consensus is that the earth is likely entering another global cooling period.  One of the fellows is a farmer, and he said that every farming family he knows has a minimum of a years supply of food on hand and in storage.  He buys diesel fuel by the tanker truck load, and again usually has a years supply of fuel on hand.  It was an interesting discussion.
