Hurricane Arthur 2014

Well now it looks like we are going to have a little storm dropping in on Independence Day along the east coast this year. Hurricane Arthur is the first hurricane of the season.

Since we have forum members living in the path of Arthur I thought it would be interesting to follow the hurricane up the coast reported on by the forum's members. Please report your Who, what, where, when, why and how here.

For south-central Georgia, I'm predicting rain and wind, with minor inconveniences of slowed traffic and possible power outages. What usually happens to us when hurricanes hit.

Based on the earlier model, I predict the same. I just splashed my dock and little lobster boat. I may have to pull her and raise the float. I am blaming this whole hurricane thing on me.

If I hadn't splashed both, there would be no Arthur coming up the coats

July 4, 2014 1450hrs Eastern time.

Hurricane Arthur's eye is located about 100 miles off Cape May, New Jersey as I type and moving northeast.

Currently barometer is is at 1013 mbs (millibars) and falling slowly. Rain bands are coming through that are so heavy they are actually flattening the waves in front of my house. The wind which is a steady 18 mph is coming out of the east/southeast. This is fine as our house faces the west and there is a big hill east of us. 

We have heard thunder and seen lightening. My guest o' mate is that Arthur will be do east at about 75 miles of us between 1900-2000hrs local time.

The next high tide will be at ~0130hrs Saturday July 5th so he should be by when that happens.

Final report...

Hurricane Arthur has passed east of us and is on it's way to Newfoundland.

Rain has stopped but the wind has clocked around to the north and finally coming from the northwest which is causing some serious waves angled perfect for our house. The little lobster boat at the dock is dancing away on the 4-5 foot rollers coming in hitting our house. BooMMMMMM! The house just shook again as another wave just hit us.

Owe well time to go to bed. It's all in Gods hands.

  Burt, you would be surprised what has washed up on our beach and under our house.

So why are you keeping me in suspense

- Beautiful lumber from 100 year old ships/barges
- Oodles of dead critters like; Raccoons, horse shoe crabs, fish of all sizes,
- Fishing equipment. Watch out for barbed hooks while removing the dead stinky dead things
- Canes, walkers and crutches
- 55 gallon drums
- Trash: diapers, tampon applicators, bottles, etc
- Coolers. One year I found a cooler with fresh fish in the cooler...Yumm. 

When I use to be a member of the coastal commission, we use to look for floaters (Dead bodies) underneath peoples houses. Usually one or two a year.

By the way do you know how to lift a bloated body out of the water? With a cotton sheet. Tie one end of the sheet to cleats down the side of the boat. Throw the sheet in the water and being cotton it will sink fast. Two divers hold the sheet at the "in water side" a foot or so under the water while the other diver moves the bloated, crab pecked at body onto the sheet. The two divers who were holding the end in the water hand it up to the 3 guys on the boat and they pull and roll the body over the side with the help of the three divers.

I digress....

Lotz of interesting crap in the water this time of year.
