Thousands of Electric Vehicles Recalled in US Over "No Start Condition"
By Jack Phillips June 15, 2022 Updated: June 15, 2022

Ford announced it is recalling nearly 50,000 electric vehicles in response to a defect with the cars' batteries, which could lead to a loss of power while driving.

The automotive firm instructed dealers to stop selling Mustang Mach-Es produced between May 27, 2020, and May 24, 2022, that do not have the proper repairs. Ford said it is working to develop a fix for the 48,924 cars that have experienced a loss of power, overheating, and startup problems.

"In the affected vehicles, it is possible that the high voltage battery main contactors may overheat, which can result in an open contactor or welding condition. Should the contactors weld closed while driving, a powertrain malfunction warning light will be illuminated on the next drive cycle, along with a no start condition," the company said in a letter.

According to Ford, the issue stems from a battery main contactor that can overheat and may remain stuck open or become welded.

"Should the contactors weld closed while driving, a powertrain malfunction warning light will be illuminated on the next drive cycle, along with a no-start condition," said Ford.

Ford spokesperson Said Deep told Nexstar the problem specifically relates to the vehicles' "Direct Current" fast charging, adding that there is a chance the better (battery?) can overheat, which "may lead to arcing and deformation of the electrical contact surfaces." That may lead to the car losing power while driving, Deep said, significantly raising the risk of an accident.

Deep added that the repair will be fixed remotely through an "Over-The-Air (OTA) deployment" of a software update starting in July. Owners of the electric vehicle can take their Mach-Es to a Ford dealership for the software update.

Ford's letter added, "If the contactors open while driving, a powertrain malfunction warning light will be illuminated, the vehicle will display Stop Safely Now in the instrument panel cluster, and the vehicle will experience an immediate loss of motive power. The vehicle will coast to a stop, and all 12V systems including power brakes and steering will remain functional."

As of now, Ford dealerships cannot deliver any Mustang Mach-Es and cannot perform test drives, according to the letter.

"A complete Dealer Bulletin will be provided to dealers in the 3rd quarter of 2022 when it is anticipated that software and/or parts ordering information and repair instructions will be available to support this safety recall," the company wrote.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration?s website lists five other recalls associated with the Mach-E going back to March 2021, including windshield problems and loose bolts.

The Mustang Mach-E can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 45 minutes, while cars equipped with the smaller battery will charge it in 38 minutes, based on estimates from Ford.

When that asshole starts riding around in a bullet proof Electric automobile, I might consider what that idiot wants. What he wants applied to you, he doesn't want applied to him. Hmmm.... It reminds me of the old Baptist preacher who said, "Don't do as I do, do as I saY do". Just once, I would like to see the people peacefully let that asswipe know what they really think of him. I would love to see him walk or possibly stumble up to give a speach and and then every person in the crowd turn their back on him.

Few weeks ago a Porsche was on fire in the middle of the night in the fastlane on the Hollywood fwy NB in valley village.

80% sure the model was a Taycan which is their electric model option over the gas powered Panamera. Noticing alot of car fires on fwy's lately. Starting to pay attention to whether or not they are electric models.

A couple of weeks ago the University of Tennessee Mechanical Engineering Department put on a demo of various electric vehicles at one of our local State parks.  They also have a program to loan an electric vehicle for a two week period, at no cost, the user just has to provide feedback.

Anyways, I had the opportunity to drive a Nissan Leaf, which was interesting.  I've got to say, it was quiet.  The biggest problem is range.  They only have a range of about 200-225 miles.  I got into an active discussion with a grad student, who was insisting the current electrical infrastructure could handle a large influx of electric vehicles.  I've got to give him some slack, as he had a mechanical engineering degree, not an electrical engineering degree.  These advocates for electric vehicles really don't have a clue, they're caught up in the "green vision".  I noticed that the car only had enough charge to go another 50 miles, and I asked him how he was going to get back to the campus.  He advised me there was a level 2 charging station nearby.  A level one charging station, which would typically be installed at a home runs $3000-5000.  The quickest charger, a level 3, costs $75,000, and they're usually only installed near stadiums, or large factories, because they have high voltage and high amperage requirements.  So how the heck is the infrastructure going to handle that load?

They did have one of the new Mustangs there too.  The center console had a massive touch screen interface, I'm guessing 12"x18", and there was another screen which handled all the traditional gauge duties.  It had enormous storage capacity too, with storage in the front where a traditional motor would go, and a good size trunk.

Until the battery capacity problem is addressed, I see electric vehicles only being feasible in urban settings.  They just aren't practical out here, where the coyotes howl.

Thx for the AAR Jackalope.

What ever happened to those EV/Gasoline cars like the Prius? IMO, they seemed to be the best option of both worlds.  I think they get 50+ miles to the gallon.
