That's not in the best part of town, so no big surprise.  It's too bad, because parts of Buffalo are interesting.

10 fatalities, 3 wounded.  Shooter surrendered in parking lot.  Retired cop security guard hit shooter in chest with sidearm to no effect, apparently kevlar vest, guard one of those killed.   I have seen a pic (cannot find now) showing someone in what appears to be a grocery store parking lot with the N-word on the front site of a MSR.  Gives me strong suspicion the racially motivated aspect is accurate.

Witnesses describe horrors of mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket that killed 10 people and authorities say was racially motivated
By Travis Caldwell, CNN

(CNN)Shoppers in and around a Buffalo, New York, supermarket Saturday detailed being forced to hide behind cars, calling out for help as a gunman killed 10 people and wounded three others in a mass shooting authorities believe was racially motivated.

Grady Lewis said he was outside the supermarket when he heard seven or eight gunshots, and described seeing a White man "fully prepared, ready to go," dressed in tactical gear spraying gunfire at the entry of the store, which is located in the heart of the city's Black community.

Law enforcement arrived within two minutes after the shooting began, Lewis told CNN affiliate WKBW. He "heard at least 20 or so shots" before the suspect exited the store.

"He came out, he put the gun to his head, to his chin. Then he dropped it and took off his bulletproof vest, then got on his hands and knees and put his hands behind his back," Lewis said, describing the moments the suspect was arrested by police. "I thought they were going to shoot him but they didn't shoot him."

"I still don't even believe it happened ... that a person would go into a supermarket full of people," he said. "It was horrible, it was really horrible."

One woman told WKBW she received a distressing phone call from her "scared, hysterical" 19-year-old granddaughter who was at the supermarket and heard gunshots. The woman raced to the scene and found her granddaughter outside the store.

"I can't even explain it, how grateful I am to God that she's ok because she could have been one of the other people," she told WKBW.

Two people remain hospitalized in stable condition, a spokesman for Erie County Medical Center told CNN Saturday night, and a third person wounded was discharged.

Of the 13 victims, 11 were Black and two were White, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said.

The suspect, Payton S. Gendron, an 18-year-old White man, was charged with first-degree murder, prosecutors said. He pleaded not guilty in court Saturday night, Buffalo City Court Chief Judge Craig Hannah told CNN.
The US Department of Justice is investigating the shooting "as a hate crime and an act of racially-motivated violent extremism," according to a statement from US Attorney General Merrick Garland. The FBI and ATF are coordinating with local and state law enforcement in their investigations, the statement said.

The shooting was a "straight up racially motivated hate crime from somebody outside of our community," Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia said Saturday. "This was pure evil."

How the shooting unfolded

At around 2:30 p.m., authorities allege the suspect -- who hails from the town of Conklin, a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Buffalo in Western New York -- drove to Tops Friendly Markets near the areas of Masten Park and Kingsley, which are predominantly Black neighborhoods.

Wearing tactical gear and armed with "an assault weapon," the suspect allegedly shot and killed three people in the parking lot and wounded a fourth, according to a statement from Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn.

The suspect then entered the store and exchanged gunfire with an armed security guard, who was a retired member of the Buffalo Police Department, the statement said.
Because the suspect wore heavy tactical gear, however, the guard's bullets did not have any effect, Gramaglia said Saturday.
"He was very heavily armed," the police commissioner said. "He had tactical gear, he had a tactical helmet on, he had a camera that he was livestreaming what he was doing."

Inside the store, nine people were shot before the suspect was apprehended by police, with the guard and six others dying from their wounds, according to the district attorney's statement.

In a statement sent to CNN, livestreaming service Twitch confirmed the shooting was streamed and said the user "has been indefinitely suspended from our service, and we are taking all appropriate action, including monitoring for any accounts rebroadcasting this content."

CNN obtained a portion of the livestream that showed the suspect arriving at the supermarket in his vehicle and is not airing the video.

Authorities investigating shooting as hate crime

Following the shooting, investigators obtained "certain pieces of evidence" that "indicate some racial animosity" from the suspect, Flynn said during a Saturday news conference.

"I'm not going to ... elaborate on what exactly they are right now but we have evidence in custody right now that shows that there is some racial component," Flynn said.

Investigators are reviewing a 180-page purported manifesto that was posted online in connection with the shooting, two federal law enforcement sources told CNN.

The manifesto, independently obtained by CNN shortly after the attack and before authorities released the suspect's name, is allegedly written by a person claiming to be Payton Gendron confessing to the attack.

The manifesto's author says he bought ammo for some time but didn't get serious about planning the attack until January. The author goes on about his perceptions of the dwindling size of the White population and claims of ethnic and cultural replacement of Whites, and describes himself as a fascist, a White supremacist and an anti-Semite.
Additional charges may be filed alongside the count of first-degree murder, Flynn said, and the suspect faces a maximum of life in prison without parole if convicted.

President Joe Biden condemned the shooting in a statement Saturday night and said he is grieving for the families of those lost.

"We still need to learn more about the motivation for today's shooting as law enforcement does its work, but we don't need anything else to state a clear moral truth: A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation," he said. "Hate must have no safe harbor."

"This is the worst nightmare that any community can face and we are hurting and we are seething right now as a community," Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said. "The depth of pain that families are feeling and that all of us are feeling right now cannot even be explained."

Speaking to the suspected motive of the shooting, Darius G. Pridgen -- the president of Buffalo's city council and the senior pastor of True Bethel Baptist Church -- told CNN's Pamela Brown he hopes it is understood that race relations in the city do not have to be frayed and that the shooting was the act of an "evil" individual from outside the community.

"The same way I don't want to see Black people painted with a broad brush if we have one Black person (do wrong), they say, 'Oh, those Black folks.' So at the end of the day, I don't want to see the same thing happen in our community with Black and White relations," Pridgen said.

"This was not a White man from Buffalo. This was a White person who was evil, so I don't want to see all White people painted and to have a tension between Black and White because of the individual who should serve his time."

All it takes is one psychotic idiot to provide the left with all the fuel it wants to push it's narrative.  The shooter's white, therefore (fill in the blanks with your favorite leftist rant).  Now don't get me wrong, if the guy is guilty  (which is pretty obvious) he should hang.  He did the crime, he pays the price. (Of course, in NY, he can't- he gets to be a drain on society for the rest of his life). Why should anyone else have to pay for a moron's actions?
Since the beginning of the year there have been at least 4 other mass shootings that in general were not reported heavily in national news. Wanna guess why?  Black-on-black shootings- didn't fit the narrative the left wants to push, would possibly alienate the dems voter base (like black people don't realize there's a black crime problem).
Like Jackalope said, buy body armor now, cause I'm betting in some places you won't be able to pretty soon (and this ain't sarcasm)

Some of the soft bullet-proof vests are light weight, but they'll mostly only stop handgun rounds.  The vests that many law enforcement officers wear is light and thin enough it can be concealed under clothing.  It's still a bear to wear during summer months.  The HDPE plates are relatively lightweight and most are rated IIIA, and they're not too expensive.

I knew one officer that wore his vest even when riding on a jet ski.  I'm not sure if kevlar vests provide much buoyancy, but he was prepared if someone decided to take a shot at him while on the water.

I have a Kevlar Flak Jacket and a Kevlar Helmet. If I was an ex-police officer, I would know not to use a sidearm against it. OK, the guy also had a helmet so a head shot would not be a good choice unless he could get in a face shot. If I saw that kind of gear, I would have gone for a shot from the waist down to immobilize the bad guy. Hmmmmm.... And Yankees think that Southerners are stupid. Every time I hear, see, or read about a mass shooting, my first thought is, "Why wasn't everyone one of those people carrying a Firearm?" Then I remember that they usually happen in places that ban firearms. As long as the idiots running the government are backwards thinkers, we will continue to have this kind of thing happen. I can't tell you how many times that I've yelled at the TV when there is a gunfight. Some fool stands right out in the open and shoots at 4 or 5 bad guys and then gets shot. Well, Duuhhh...... They should get DOWN, make themselves as SMALL a target as possible and get behind an object that is relatively bullet proof.

PK, everything you say is true. Unfortunately dealing with such situations requires the LEO (or bystander) not to panic and think it through quickly.  Almost everyone panics in that kind of situation to some degree or another.
I saw a vid not long ago about a shoot out between 2 cops and a gang banger that occurred as a result of a traffic stop (somewhere in Florida).  The banger produced an AR pistol, the first cop ran to concealment (not cover) at his cruiser. The second pull his glock and hit his mag release in his panic, then ran behind his cruiser. The first cop was shot, though he returned fire and wounded the banger. Then he proceeded to fire at a couple of folks that had been in the car with the perp and had run away from the area. Neither of which had made any threatening moves at all. The banger, meanwhile had his AR jam so he rushed the first cop, using it as a club. The cop sustaining pretty bad wounds (from panicking and losing situational awareness). The second cop finally got his act together and pumped 17 rounds into the banger. If cop #2 hadn't panicked, the first cop might not have been wounded at all.
Seeing the perp in body armor and then making the mental connection for shot placement is not something I imagine most police depts train for.  Most cops never draw their weapons on the job, unless it's on the range. And they shoot on the range very seldom. Lack of training directly leads to panic.
You guys know I'm a retired nurse. It's kinda like having a brand new nurse in a code blue. You can see the panic in their eyes and the "What am I supposed to do?" written on their faces. You have to remind them to breathe, settle down, and follow their training. As an instructor told me once and I've never forgotten it-"the first pulse you take is your own".

_When_ I carry, it is concealed ankle.   This means getting "down" to access the weapon and automatically means I'm a reduced target (if I stay down).   And when I take the gun out for occasional practice, the "draw" is always a part of it.   Maybe not enough for rock-solid "muscle memory" but certainly practiced.
I've been shot at once and the experienced reaction was same as during other surprise "challenges".   Yes, the sound of a pistol slug whizzing past your ear focuses the mind wonderfully.
So now, we have to start packing heat while shopping for groceries?    That's just f***ing wonderful.
But shame on me for not carrying always anyway.    Because by now, if one doesn't yet grasp just how wonderful our world as fast become...

I carry.  Always.

Every time I have pants on I am armed. I don't go to town pantless.  Being at home wearing sweats does not count as pants.  Even then I am close.

I started that when I started carrying (under required permit) in FL a fair while back.

You will never find me thinking-- If only I had my gun.

If I go somewhere that has a no gun sign I occasionally ignore it.  In VA if you violate a sign its at worst a trespassing after being asked to leave and you do not.  Most often I go in, see the manager and complain and let them know they lost my business.  If I go to another state I check their laws before arrival.

I may carry a little .380 but it has become a R-51 9mm most often but also frequently a 3.5 inch 1911 .45.  I always carry a spare magazine.  Occasionally I carry a 5906 and with 18 round on board I may skip the extra magazine.

The .380 is frequently carried so I can carry it in beyond sign bearing doors.

I may get killed in a shooting like this, but I will at least be returning fire.  If I don't stop the shooter it will likely draw attention and allow one or 2 others to get out.

Just remember, gun friendly state or not so friendly, conceal carry is just that. Conceal carry. NOBODY should know you are carrying.

Went to a concert Friday night with MrsMac and I was carrying even though there was a big-ass-sign restricting weapon carry even if you had a CCW.

I am one of those who carry concealed when necessary, sloppy cover mostly and open is not unusual.

I think most people (not carriers primarily) do not realize how many carriers there are out there and how unremarkable it is to have someone carrying a gun nearby at wal mart or most anywhere.

Concealed Carry is GOOD!

Here in our previously quiet and peaceful very rural county, we have a significant portion of the populace who carry. This is in response to the significant portion of the community who bring in fambly members from large cities when the police/anti-gang units up there in the cities come to know these family members as criminals and begin to close-in.  Mommy down here tells Baby to live with her while things calm down. We have had some VERY deadly crimes here lately as the city critters swarm out of their cities, and come here to stay with Mommy.  Criminals are criminals by choice and coming here is at first seen as an easy feeding and breeding ground for more crime.  Fortunately, we have very good sheriff and police who transition from friendly and helpful neighbor 'country-cop' to criminal hunters in a flash, much to the surprise of the occasional visitor from DC/Baltimore, Newark &etc. as their noses hit the dirt.

One scanner call call was particularly funny as a combined force of LEOs raided a local drug house and ONE of the city criminals made it out the door and ran into the woods. He was NO Daniel Boone and hesoon realized that he was in pitch black Southern semi-jungle/coastal swamps with bugs, snakes and etc. Within twenty minutes, the "offender"  called out to the deputies who were hunting him and Mr. Gangbanger LOUDLY gave himself up.  Evidetly he was quite afraid while alone, in the dark woods in knee deep water (and deeper), with deep , sticky mud and prefered to be cuffed in in the back of a safe and clean patrol car where nothing was going to bite him.  Most of our deputies and police know their way around towns AND woods. Tracking dogs are still 'a thing' here and these criminals are probably afraid of dogs as well.

Our radio scanner is an EXCELLENT tool for local news and the current situation.

Sir John, great story

Yeah, although we have an issue with druggies most of them seem to be temporary transplants from the likes of Brooklyn, new ark, and other fun places. They do not remain long because either they run into a county sheriff, a man who's daughter, wife or mother gets insulted, or folks like me, who keep pretty good control on their twp. one track dirt road.

They tend to move on to Binghamton, NY. or Scranton/Allentown, PA.
