In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.

I'm guessing the U.S. has some very sophisticated radiation detection equipment.  If we do indeed have the equipment, and the reactor is actually is leaking; it'll be interesting if the U.S. divulges whether radiation is detected.  They may want to keep their intelligence gathering abilities secret.  Hopefully the radiation leak will be corroborated by other sources, besides the French.  I guess once the citizens of several communities die from radiation poisoning that we'll have confirmation.

In direct health terms to you and I, this is "probably" not a major worry item.   "Dilution to pollution is the solution".
However.
Historic shipwrecks (including many war graves) of WWII are "disappearing".   Salvaged without permit for their steel which was mined and smelted _before_ nuclear contamination in the '50's and onward.   It is material critical to fabrication of the monitoring of instruments used in in study of ongoing environmental "problems" where baseline versus contaminated environments are concerned.
