Law Enforcement on scene at the Rainbow Food Store in Youngstown after man tried to attack Sheriff Tommy Ford with a hammer.
Youngstown, Fla. - Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford is uninjured after a man attempted to attack him with a hammer Thursday morning.
The sheriff and other deputies responded to the Rainbow Store at 11798 Hwy. 231 this morning at 11:15 due to a report of an armed and dangerous man in the store threatening employees, officials wrote in a news release.
Deputies arrived along with Ford, Chief Joel Heape, and Major Jimmy Stanford. After speaking with employees outside the front of the store, they were able to determine the man inside was armed with a hammer and had threatened to kill people in the store, deputies wrote.
The man, a white male wearing a hoodie, approached the front door from the inside at the same time as Ford, Heape and Stanford. The man began swinging the hammer at the door before retreating back into the store.
"The Sheriff and others entered the store and the man lunged at them, swinging the hammer at them," deputies wrote. "They were quickly able to subdue him and take him into custody."
The man has been taken to a local hospital for medical attention, officials wrote. He has not yet been identified.
