Brexit update from the UK (Sort of)
« on: December 12, 2018, 03:04:46 AM »
Hi all,

Thought I might post an update on the state of affairs here in the UK on Brexit.

However....

All I can say is "What a mess"

At the moment the the UK leaves the EU on 29 March 2019.

At this moment there is no negotiated and ratified deal. While the Government has negotiated a deal with the EU. It looks like that deal does not stand much of a chance of being approved by the UK political entities. Neither side of the issue likes the deal.

Even worse the government is in turmoil and the politicians seem to be more concerned with winning more personal power than getting around the table and making sure that leaving the EU is as painless as possible for the UK.

So there is no real way to predict the outcome. All I can say at the moment is that the closer we get to the date without a plan. The more likely that the UK is going to experience so real difficulties from 29 March onward.

I will keep you all posted when I am able to provide news other than the current state of affairs which is. "there is no plan still"

Cheers all.

I did not catch much about it but I think May (PM over there) is up tomorrow for a No Confidence vote.

Methinks she is going to be replaced.

Nah. She's still there. What a mess, what does she do now, the people are still for BREXIT.

Well.... She won the vote.

What an absolute mess. Don't get me wrong. Changing the leadership of the Government at this point would have been a complete disaster at this point.

However at the moment this is still like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

Now I must declare a bias in this that I hope will not sway my reporting this as it happens.

The more screwed up things get in this thing the better off I am at least in the near term. The majority of my income is from my US Army Retirement and VA Disability. So a weak £ is good for me.

I have been watching the BREXIT cluster F*&K as I have family north of Hadrian's Wall. I have also read that Italy is now threatening to leave the EU too. Probably because they do not want to curb their governments spending.

Now Switzerland is returning to the Swiss Franc and moving away from the EU Dollar.

Then of course we have the rioting in France and the Netherlands. I also read somewhere that there was no riots in the UK but protests in support of the Yellow Jkt protests in France.

Now of course I am 2,500 miles west across the pond so I really only know what gadget and the MSM tell us. Gadgets reports are of course a lot more valuable as he doesn't have a dog in this hunt.

Interesting times folks...Interesting times.

Tommy Robinson led a protest in London against the EU a few days ago.

The turnout for his group was pretty dismal and was out numbered x3 with a counter protest.

The EU is and will make the UK leaving the EU so painful that others may talk about doing so. Yet will not want to face the pain of doing so.

Will keep everyone updated.

Questions are welcome.

Well............

I keep looking to provide updates on the Brexit.....

At the moment the whole thing is such a mess that there is no way to get a solid handle on what is happening or going to happen.

31 March this year the UK leaves the EU.

Status report.

1. No ratified agreement between the UK and EU for an orderly transition.
2. No detailed plan from the UK Government for the management of the transition.
3. The majority of businesses in the UK have no tangible plans in place on how to manage in the instance of a No Deal Brexit.
4. Only a few months out and the government has just now started looking at how to manage things like pharmaceutical supplies, fuel supplies and such. Yet again no plans. Just warning people to order in extra meds just in case.

Talk about watching a train wreck in slow motion.

Now my family is ok in our planning to a point. Yet it is REALLY going to an interesting few months running up to the leave date.

No way to predict what is going to happen at the moment.

Will try to provide updates when things make enough sense........

Cheers

Well.......

The clock is ticking and unsurprisingly there is no agreed plan.

The political parties are still fighting for power without working together to agree on anything.

After 2.5 years there is no plan and no agreement with the EU agreed. The end of March the UK is supposed to leave the EU.

Gonna be interesting in a bad way.

Cheers

Yeah, politicians here are having a challenge on illegal immigration and border security. It is ugly in DC too.

It is a fight between the Elites and the people on both sides of the Pond.

@gadget99

What happens if no agreement is reached by March 29th?
If the is no agreement. The UK will crash out of the EU.

What this means is that all of the arrangements associated with being part of the EU end on that day. With no negotiated arrangements being in place to allow for any normalcy in daily interchange with the EU.

1. No trade deals or treaties with the EU.
2. No border transit arrangements.
3. UK citizens living in the EU would no longer be covered for medical care.
4. A hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland would have to be implimanted overnight.

All movement between the UK and the EU would have to stop completely until arrangements are made to govern the movement. This means no people, no freight, no ships, no ferries and such.

Any items that are normally supplied from the EU would no longer be available until a trade treaty is negotiated.

There will be issues immediately in the supply of medications, some food and petroleum products.

A deal would institute a transition period of up to two ish years where all of the above as well as many more treaties and agreements are hashed out.

This is indeed going to be interesting.

Nobody has taken the time to really look at the damage a no deal exit will do. They have just done what political elites do normally. Look how to gain more power.

While it should not be a SHTF. It could indeed be bad enough for preppers here to have a bit of a training run.

We shall see.

I forgot to mention one other dynamic that is not being payed attention too.

With no defined plan or deal. Businesses both small and large are unable to plan for the future.

As a matter of fact the larger businesses like the banks, manufacturers and such are being forced to plan for no deal.

They are planning for the worst case. Preparing to move assets and operations to the EU. An example is Nissan having a plant here in the UK due to its access to the EU market. Does anyone believe that the plant here will not be downsized?

Getting out of a bad marriage is always painful and expensive. As I understand it the EU is about 11 countries who joined together and allowed Belgium to run the whole thing. That would be like Canada, the US, and Mexico becoming one country and letting Mexico run it.

Well....

3 weeks out and there is still no deal agreed.

People and businesses are trying to stock up.

The pharmacists are already having issues getting some meds.

A bunch of big manufacturers are announcing closure or downsizing of factories.

Not looking good.

Anything is possible at the moment.

However mine and my own are in good shape to weather out whatever happens.

gadget, I truly wish you had ham radio comms so we could keep in contact if the SHTF. Do you have a friend near your AO that I could have a QSO with if things go down the shitter?

Let me do some checking around.

Been keeping a VERY low profile since moving back to the Island.

We are in a very safe position at the moment.

Still thinking about getting my amateur radio license. I have to get a short range radio license anyway for the boat. That will be happening soon.

Largest concern is that with the ham radio license I would be on a gov list. Gonna think on that a bit. Working the greyman thing at the moment.

However I will indeed be picking up some more powerful base station radios to be used if things get to the point where the gov has other things to be concerned about, than unlicensed users. I am adding an HF transceiver to the procurement list.

Cross trained in radio comms during my time in. So have a good base of knowledge to start from.
