A one year contract (4 option years) for 450 million rounds?  Are you kidding me?  Are they expecting a Chinese invasion or something?  If not, that tells me DHS agents can't shoot for shit.

you know what would really be an awesome number to get our hands on.... if there was somehow a way to solicit all the major ammo manufacturers for their recent sales data to the civilian market.

What do you want to bet that DHS has thought of that as well.  After all, there aren't too many people in the country who aren't suspected potential terrorists according to the DHS warning lists of suspicious activity.

ejr i understand your point but think of it this way. how many rounds do you blow off on an average range trip? now, whatever that number may be, consider the fact that you're operating under your own personal budget. I'd imagine financial constraints limit how much you practice. (it sure as hell limits me!)

now think about a virtually endless budget, and how much you'd practice if you had an endless budget.

this is the main reason that this 450mil rds doesn't spook me too much.

i'm shooting 500rds a week through my handgun

now how many folks are there in the DHS?
figure that many and all the ammo they need to carry/train with and you got a pretty small amount of ammo there

So this is what they practice with?  Makes you wonder how bad ass the rounds they use in the field are.

That's kind of my point NOLA.  Why do they need that many pistol rounds?  I wonder how much .223 they have ordered if they are ordering that much in .40 cal.

Mountain I doubt anywhere near 240,000 DHS employees are armed.

At any rate guys.  I'm glad they are keeping America safe from whoever it is that is threatening America.

well i dont know how many thousands of agents are in Home Land Security but those guys do shoot atleast a thousand rounds a year for quals every three months. plus any agent can go to one of their ranges and shoot as much as they want for free. 450 million rounds isnt really all that much.

MP 5 sub machine gun (10mm / .40) is the favorites of the Feds.

Also, read up on the Katyn Forest Massacre. Kind of scary. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_massacre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_massacre)

Wait, they make the MP5 in .40 too?  Damn, and here I thought it was still just 9mm...

Just looked.  Cool.

FBI has about 1,400 of these MP5s (10mm) in inventory, but aside from them, the 10mm MP5 has been eclipsed by the sale of the much more popular MP5/40

God, I wish I was so rich, I could use hollow point rounds just to go to the fucking range.   [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

i think that was sledge's point. these aren't for training purposes. even the fed gov isn't that blatantly dumb.

it still doesn't spook me too much, but it is at least a little unnerving. I'd feel better if it was 450Mil cheap FMJs.

I would too.  If government employees train with the most expensive ammo, the one they carry, well that's just ANOTHER case of massive gov't waste.  There is no reason to shoot more than a mag or your carry ammo, but if you're going to train a lot, why not train with the cheaper ammo, you know, because its our money, and not their money they are wasting.

Another Article on the subject of the 450 million rounds ordered by DHS dated April 22.  They just keep coming.  I found this one interesting because it includes testimony by Maj. Gen. Buford C. Blount III that in 2004 the amount of ammunition expended in Iraq was 5.5 million rounds per month.

Thank you Sledge for the followup article.

Two points:

1) The article was obviously leaning to one side. However even once you filter out the jive it is scary. So you better...
2) ...keep up doing what you can to prepare. I hate to admit this however I am learning daily that we can't stop the process we
are going through with the exception of writing letters and voting. You do have the ability though (at least now) to prep.

Remember, that most of us pay out huge amounts of $$$ for house and car insurance yearly. Concider prepping as insurance
against the possibility of the unthinkable.

I've been in Law enforcement for 10 years and I've worked for the DHS for 3 years. This is just my thoughts on this. At the local LEO level we qualify ( not training) with our duty ammo with duty weapon twice a year and fire about 100 rounds. Training we use Sim rounds or training ammo with the same grain weight as our duty ammo. also take in to account that not everyone at DHS carry .40 S&W the F.A.M.S. carry .357 Sig's ICE and the Border Patrol and some other uniformed departments carry .40 S&W . ICE also has the H&K UMP in 40. so I think 450 million is allot.

You guys are funny.  It reminds me of the time at a packinghouse.  There were a lot of Mexicans working there whom we had I-9's in their files with the documentation showing they could work in the U.S.

Well the county process server came in wearing a uniform looking for some to serve papers on.  I came out of the office and half the employees were gone.  I was like what happened, where is everyone?  I guess they thought he was Ice and they were hauling ass out of every door and window in the place.  LOL.

We were like, I think we need to check these peoples documentation again.  LOL!
