I agree, if they dont have English and the other fundamentals down, why require a second language. Granted, computers is also listed as a second language... lol Its all part of the "world view, world citizen" bull crap. But bottom line, like with a lot of things the government is into...

A foreign language credit is required to graduate most high schools.
Nobody was bitching when it was spanish and french.
What's wrong with learning arabic?
If we are going to embark and imperialist ventures in the middle east we will need translators.

RS: Yes, no one was bitching about having to take a foreign language class back in the day, still not. Why? Because you can choose spanish, french, russian or whatthefugever. The fact is that this Elementary school is requiring all student learn ARABIC. It says that they will work on a case-by-case basis on students that refuse but we have yet to hear about it. The thing is that the school says it is going for some kind of recognition. I have my doubts...

Its good they can learn a little culture, I speak a couple of languages but why Arabic ???

Our church youth group has some missionary girls who lived in turkey and speak Arabic as a second language. Yes it should be required. If I have to take latin they can take arabic.

Kobalt... NO language should be required and forcing a child to undergo indoctrination is not exposing them to "culture". You want "culture" then go abroad. Your argument is irrelevant. As I said, NO second language should be required when most children and young adults in the this country cannot even read/write/speak proper English!
