What is the name of the movie?

Last week a friend and I were discussing what types of scenarios might realistically prevail during an EMP or even a power outage that lasted longer than a few days, and how people might react to them. The ultimate goal was to offer advice to a new urban prepper we had met at an open meeting last month who was alarmed about what might happen. As often happens these days, as the discussion progressed, we started listing scenes in movies that we had seen that depicted such scenarios to offer as examples.

There was one movie that we both saw a few years ago that seemed like a good example. It involved a sudden power outage and a family that was reacting to it that provided one clear example of what could happen; unfortunately, neither one of us can remember the name of the movie. I am hoping that someone might recognize the plot and be able to tell me the name of the movie.

If I remember correctly, the father of a family of 4 was portrayed as a serious prepper, but his family was not invested in prepping. When the power went out he took his family to his well-stocked BoL where he had food and other supplies stored. At the time the power went out his teenage daughter had her boyfriend at the house, and she convinced her father to take him with the family when they bugged out. This proved to be a mistake as this boyfriend disagreed with keeping the family stored supplies for themselves and started to secretly steal the host family?s food and supplies and give them to desperate people in the neighborhood in the middle of the night. Ultimately these people decided to overrun the family compound and take their supplies. Just as this was taking place, the power suddenly came back on.

Do you know what the name of the movie might be? Thanks in advance for your help.

Grizz, it has been a while, and like you, I have seen quite a few prepper-related movies since then myself. To the best of my memory, it was set in a suburban setting.

It?s called BLACKOUT, made by the History Channel I believe. Similar style to AFTER ARMAGEDDON

Thanks for all the tips and comments. I just watched it and I must say, that ?prepper? had some good ideas, and did a lot of things right, but he also did a lot of things wrong, in my opinion. It almost got him killed! His worst mistake was bringing an unknown, unvetted person (his daughter?s boyfriend) into his BoL and then he showed him everything that he had! I am truly surprised that the boyfriend survived the ordeal, but this is a TV movie after all. The prepper also made the mistake of hesitating, acting solo instead of forming a team, or building a MAG before everything happened.

For the rest of the movie, I think it depicted things happening as I think most of us believe that they will, although the interpersonal actions will probably be much more violent. I believe that this movie may prove educational for new preppers who are trying to figure things out.

I did not realize that I saw this movie that long ago. Thanks again for your help!

Is it on prime, netflix or other?

I watched one the other night which ended in an interesting way. It was not the best acting or put together very well but the story was interesting

Long story short - Emergency broadcast warning to stay indoors and martial law in affect
- story revolves around family of 5, teenage son (smart ass), teenage daughter (just found out she is pregnant by BF who happens to be at the house at the time), young son about 6 years old and father by LEO who is not involved but shows up to take possession of son when SHTF, cheating wife, stressed about life father
- Family drama leads to everyone dying

Lessons
- Always be ready for the unexpected
- calmer heads prevail
- Line from Clint Eastwood movie "If your gonna shoot, shoot, DONT talk"

These PostApoc movies and novels can be good fuel for thought, even if they are often and disappointingly WRONG on so many tech points.  This scenario of some kid thinking "that's not FAIR!' because you thought ahead, scrimped and saved, while they enjoyed that 58" TV, 4 inch nails and hair done every 2 weeks... you have a pantry and his little pal from school, his deadbeat momma and her 9 children from 42 baby daddies do not...  In an ideal TEOTWAWKI , sure tell them to stand in the south field by the back hoe and I'll send them something that will solve their problems.

Smile and wait for the flash.            

However, after the last shell casing hits the dirt, and the lights unexpectantly come back ON, there will be someone come by to tell you that you're a criminal... Just tell them it was a couple of guys in MAGA hats who dunnit.

That is exactly the one I thought of when I read post #1.  I dislike the ending though.

It is well worth a watch a couple of times over and discussion with others in the house/group/friends as appropriate.

Robert Heinlein wrote along these lines in a few of his novels.  Farnham's Freehold comes to mind.

Remember the 'lifeboat exercise' used for so many years? (a)   I do remember one lieutenant declaring " I'll just take them all into the shelter.".  My response: "Congratulations Lieutenant, you just killed them all.".  I found sergeants to be much more pragmatic and practical, shoot the LT and take command before he kill us all.

1. Paul, Doctor, veteran of three wars, second major: degreed mechanical engineer, married with two children.
