I just read an amazing post-apocalyptic survival book titled Manna City. Has anyone else read this? Also, does anyone have any other suggestions for good survival fiction?

 I just finished "One Second After" . It will scare the heck out of you. Then there's "Alas Babylon".

I just finished Frontier Justice (The Survivalist Book I) by Dr. Arthur Bradley. It's free from amazon if you have their Kindle or their laptop/Personal computer app which is also free.

Instead of me writing down a bunch of authors and titles, what books/authors have you read?

   There are so many post-apocalyptic novels out today, it's amazing.  Back in the late 70's-ealy 80's all we had was Alas Babylon, Lucifer's Hammer, Earth Abides, and the early Survivalist books by Jerry Ahern.  Now there's a wide variety, and to be honest, some of it's trash and the information inside could get you killed.

    It seems like there's 10 more coming out every day.  One series that I enjoy is the 'Borrowed World' series by Franklin Horton which is realistic.  At this point I have well over 100 novels to read; I need to retire so I can catch up on my reading!

Now that the genre has exploded it is clear some authors used to write romance novels.. You can tell by the introduction that everything is about female characters and their feelings and the apocalypse just serves as backdrop to their quest to find the right guy.

Also some of the Post-Apoc fiction seem written in ways that are cliche in overcoming clichee.

For example it seems like every other novel has the teenage or even tween daughter of the family making all the most insightful observations and determinations..while all somehow being the best shots since they were all somehow "somewhat of a tomboy"

I like the Jakarta Epidemic quite a bit and tend to gift it to folks however, I think its a good tool to "convert" people.

Pro:
- extremely realistic in how the epidemic slowly makes its way into peoples lives day by day a little more., you can really see the transition from Phase 1 into Phase 2.
- How services slowly decay and the different milestones of Phase transitions.
- The absences of huge Mutant communist cannibal biker gangs so beloved of many novelists.
- The threat is mainly from another family unit fighting for their piece of safety and what other have.
- Even tho the main character is ex military but it also shows non military guy... whom the main character at first didnt take serious and considered "just a gun nut".... coming thru in a big way at the end. Even though I am ex-military myself I find the obsession with military main characters in Post-Apoc fiction a bit over the top.
- Even superman makes mistakes
- The setting in a suburban development covers a lot of folks that have enough resources to be prepped but not so many that they have a big retreat waiting for them.
- Men are Men, women are women and children are children in this novel.

Con: Its a bit lenghty in the beginning.. except for a couple interesting anecdotes, little seems to happen in the first quarter of the book.. before it gets going (and then everything is hard-as-nails..)

Thanks for the recommendations. I've been reading post-apocalyptic fiction, but after reading Manna City I want to try our some more survivalist-like books. I haven't read any of these authors you listed yet, so thanks.
