I liked JoJo's idea

Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family
by Dr. Arthur T Bradley

this is a plainly written well laid out book covering most major disasters and what to do about them.
each subject is set up in the same manner and it is easy to find information.
I liked the kindle book so much i bought a paper copy for my library.

it covers everything from the typical winter or summer storms to rarer and higher impact events.
it is practical and pragmatic.  it is an excellent starter book and a good reference for rounding out your existing preps.

Dr. Bradley also writes a fictional survivalist series entitles "The Survivalist", which is very entertaining.  He's also written an excellent non-fiction EMP book.  Oh, he also publishes a free on-line newsletter which discusses different prepper type topics.
