Hello everyone.

Just to introduce myself.
I am a female from Pretoria in South Africa.
As most of you have read from my fellow south Africans i have seen posting on the forums.
Things are bleak here. And it is getting worse.
But we are use to it.
I think prepping is not a new subject to me but i have grown up with it in some way. We live on a small holding on the outskirts of one of South Africa's mother cities.
It has however become more apparent in the last few months that things are beginning to move rampantly south. We are experiencing more and more crippling strikes, being unable to get to work, sitting at home fearing for your life. That would be most people, but here we have become accustomed to it as everyday life. Just another Thursday.
I have experience with farming, solar power, driving of 4x4 motor vehicles and trucks(unimogs), the use of power tools, and alot more. and offcourse all of the usual tasks a woman is accustomed to doing -a.k.a house chores :sarcasm: extensive bookkeeping skills.
Allthough the only thing i am qualified in is being a goldsmith/artist.  :stir:

In short i am glad to see other like minded South africans seeking means of preparation for what we all know looms in our not so distant future.

To all the other users from across the globe- Hallo :zombitron:

Regards

Welcome to Unchained Preppers RM!

As you noticed I moved your intro to your own intro so that all of the forum members can welcome you.

We have a great group of ladies and gents from around the world. Adding a lady to the ranks is especially special as the female prospective to prepping is so important.

Also, we have quite a few folks from South Africa and bordering countries and I am truly upset with the birth pains you and neighbors are going through.

Welcome!

Greetings and Salutations Good Lady, Hail and Well Met.

Glad to have another female point of view around here.  You may have noticed over your life that sometimes men and women have a different view on things.  Sometimes, not often but on occasion that really happens.  Over there just like in the U.S. I presume.

But anyway, do you have box big enough to send me a Unimog?  Or can you tell me how big it needs to be and I will send it to you.

Nemo

@Nemo i cannot explain the amount of laughter right now.
Shockingly this is one of the first places where female point of view has been so welcomed.
But before my lady brain loses all focus over this. Thank you.

I do believe even if you found a box the Unimog would break the box.
Good news- i can always inbox you where to buy one, or rather the guy to speak to about purchasing one, new or pre-loved.
shockingly pre-loved not as expensive as you may think.
Amazing machines.
And yes we love trips in them and all that.
I think those vehicles are a sub chat all on their own.

If i may also ask. Where from are you Nemo?

I keep things for the most part on topic and hope to be able to share and not only learn from fellow preppers who live in our shared sunny disposition of a country.

Welcome RM. A female point of view is needed because I can't get one at home. You see my wife has "terminal  normalsy bias".  :-[

RM, I am in the U.S.  Great Commonwealth of Virginia.  And you know what they say about Virginia.

To be a Virginia, by birth, marriage, adoption or even on one's mothers side, is an introduction to any state in the union, a passport to any foreign country and a benediction from above.

I still want a Unimog.  But my wife says no.

Nemo

Glad you like the bacon dancing.  I brought that along when I came here so methinks I have made some little mark on the place! :fuckYeah:

Well then gents.
What a warm welcome. Thank each one of you.
I do hear ya on the "terminal normalsy bias" i think litterally everyone i know here suffers from it. I wish i could take every single one of them on night patrol with me to see just a fraction of our issues. Hoping they could wake up and smell the bacon.

On that note. I wish more ladies could love unimogs. We are a rare sub-breed it would seem.
Currently planning a new build on one.
Hopefully will be our BOV if we need it and are unable to bunker down.

I have to say i have been setting up a list of things we allready have for self sufficiency. And i was shocked. We are well aways along.
To name a few.
We have alternate power. 2 gardens being resown for veggies. Cattle. Chickens most recently. Non city supply of water. Allthough i think rainwater tanks are next.
So a few things are on my list to do. But seems i have wukte abit underfoot allready.

So gents. Random question of the day
BOV.... how many vehicles would be considdered overkill? And would anyone say convoy travel if needed could be safer? If per say travelling to a BOL?

First, welcome Rogue-Metalsmith!  Regarding your vehicle questions, there are many factors, such as the type of vehicles, typical distances travelled, type of terrain travelled, etc.  In our case here, we have two four wheel drive SUV's, 3 motorcycles, one with a sidecar,  a couple of tractors, and lastly a velomobile and a quadracycle. Redundancy is good.
I  would say a convoy would be safer, if all the vehicle occupants are armed, since the group could potentially lay down a tremendous amount of firepower, depending upon how they're armed.  If the event of a vehicle breakdown, repairs could be effected while the rest of the group provides security protection.  If a vehicle is not repairable, then the occupants and goods of the disabled vehicle could be redistributed to the other vehicles.

One quick comment and by 2 cents worth...

This subject line is getting a bit afar from Introductions. I suggest that some one starts a Vehicle subject line. We could all learn a bunch when it comes to vehicles.

But because I can't resist I will throw a small bit of sand in the cogs of this subject/tangent. Think EMP too.

Probably more of an issue for the EU or the States than SA. Many (not all) vehicles will not function post a EMP.

Johny,

The vast majority of vehicles will be just fine under an EMP.
Keep in my mind that vehicles and ECU generally withstand lighting strikes which are way more powerful than any EMP.
We can also take this to phone and I can talk more about this.

AHOY RM!
Always glad to see another Saffer come our way.

Seems like you have some fire in you and already a good question right off the bat.

The forum is LOADED with posts on a massive number of subjects and always nice to get a fresh view on some ancient threads.

BTW If a new thread about BOVs pops up now I'll definitely be adding a few opinions.

Welcome.
