While i own a number of rounds, mostly Walking Liberties (since they look so similar to Silver Eagles which I suspect may help acceptance Post-Apoc) and Silver Buffaloes (done by a state mint and also a bit "historical" which I also feel will help acceptance by laymen Post-Apoc), I just bought quantity of maple leafs last nite.
Actually the last 3 buys I made of Silver were Maple leafs.
Why?
1) They are a Coin. While I like rounds for the value in some jurisdictions dealers cannot take your bullion silver
unless its a coin w/o a big delay and hassle.. so they dont do it.
Fairfax County , VA is such a jurisdiction. I found this out when I had to sell come Silver Buffaloes last year and "my guy" had stopped taking rounds. So it being a coin has some advantage.
2) While a round
depending on, quantity bought and wellknownness (is that even a word) of its brand, may command on average 1 dollar over spot (yes w/ sales it can be 85 cents... still aprox a buck)) and a Silver Eagle almost 3 dollars over spot , a Maple leaf usually commands a little under 2 dollars over spot. (Again assuming some reasonable but not large quantity bought). So the Silver Eagle to me is a bit too much premium over a round but I tolerate the premium of the Maple Leaf which is on average only half the "extra' more over a round a Silver Eagle is.
So the price difference to a round is not that big.. but it will have improved acceptance among some, over a round and probably will be nearly as a well accepted as Silver Eagles.
3) They also have a face value of 5 Canadian Dollars and are legal tender in Canada.. so even if something crazy happens with the Silver market you always have that face value to fall back on as a value "floor".
So you can view Maple Leafs as Bullion investment or post-apoc trade items.. Or as canadian currency. Hell will freeze over before any canadian currency is declared illegal in this country.
4) It is 99.99% pure silver or 0.9999 Silver. Rounds and other coins , that I am aware of are only "3 nines"... 0.999 or 99.9% pure. Even the Silver Eagle is "only" 99.9 % Silver.
So this is why my buying habits are what they are.
Just my 2 cents
PS: I have a new job which keeps me on the road a lot..bad for prepping but good for resourcing.. So I collect my daily per diems $$ and put it into silver whenever practical.
PS2: This is also the reason I have been posting a lot less.. My apologies.... JohnyMac if u ever see a thread u want my input on please email me as otherwise I might miss it.
