Yep, when you're a prepper, you don't have to run out to stores only to find the shelves already bare anyway.  Its a good time to be a prepper for you.  I hope we get some more info from you soon when your power is restored.

welp.

just got power back about an hour ago (about 1:30 PM 9/2/2012)

my sentiment from my OP remains the same, except for the "excited" part...  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at
don't get me wrong, I had a fucking blast the first two days. the storm was at it's strongest in my area around 4:00 AM Wednesday morning, and believe you me, I was outside running around the middle of the street. It was great. lol. wind knocked me clean off my feet more than once.  :))

now for the harsh realizations and lessons learned.

the excitement goes away as soon as the cool hurricane air goes away. and unfortunately, even as a prepper there's not a whole hell of alot that can be done about extreme heat. sure we can make sure to stay hydrated (with the water that we have, and no one else does, lol) but that doesn't keep the heat from slowing you down to a snail's pace.

honestly, the heat was the only thing that truly sucked. I really didn't miss electricity all that much aside from the lack of AC. Made a big pot of red beans in the dutch oven on the first brutally hot evening and fed the neighbors. they were amazed that I was able to cook without electricity, until I explained to them the mythical voodoo magic of a Bic lighter and a gas stove.  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

all in all, it sucked big time, but it was manageable. my neighbors would have had a far more difficult time without me.  ;) I guess that counts as "building tribe", right?

When the Northridge earthquake shut down the neighborhood we served up pancakes, bacon and hot coffee.

The neighbors were impressed!

Good to see you made it though buddy.

Glad to see you're back on and doing well, NOLA.

Hope that was a lessons learned for them, and they don't tell more people about it when the next thing goes wrong.  I hope the neighbors started to prep their own food.  Good or bad, they'll be sure to show up, maybe even bring more with them the next time something goes wrong, unless they are prepping as well.

Same goes for NOLA's neighbors.

ok so... I wasn't going to post this because it's so far out there that I didn't think anyone would take it seriously but, during the peak of the storm, the sky was lit up neon green and neon red, strobing back and forth between the two colors. it was fucking nuts. the first few times it happened, I just brushed it off as heat-lightning or something, but eventually it got so intense that there was no ignoring it. you know how when lightning strikes nearby, everything lights up bright white for a split second? well it was like that, the entire sky and everything under it lit up like daylight... except neon green and red. for about 3 hours straight. like I said, one of the craziest things I've ever seen. I did a quick google search and didn't find much. certainly nothing that described what I saw.

fucking strange.

Dropping acid during a major natural disaster, epic!   [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

LOL of course I'm kidding.  Too bad you didn't have charged batteries and a video camera to capture what happened.  That is really strange and there certainly is no explanation that I know of, bro.  Wonder who else saw it, if anyone?

well I know it wasn't just me because the neighbor was the first to see it when it first started. I had gone in to take a leak and when I came back he was ranting about the crazy lights. I thought he was nuts (or just wasted) until I saw it myself. that was the very beginning when it was every few minutes, just a flash or two. when the storm intensified, it was pretty much constant. back and forth, red/green/red/green. my wife saw it too.

Glad you made it though NOLA. I've seen some crazy light conditions during intense storms, but haven't seen the neon red yet, and hopefully never will.

on a side note, it is very interesting, this electricity thing. it provides us with such an amazingly comfortable lifestyle, while at the same time closing us off to each other. the same can be said for all the new i-whatever gadgets. (which, obviously, run on electricity)

the first and most important thing that I noticed over the last few days is the sheer number of people in the neighborhood who were out and about, socializing face to face, talking about the goings-on, bitching about the poor performance of the power company, yadda yadda. I spent most of my time hanging out with the neighbors, chasing my daughter around, getting to know people I had only just waved to over and over and over and over.

it's truly amazing how a community of people who have lived together for years only ever come together and get to know each other when the power is out and all the gadgets and gizmos are dead.

but don't get me wrong here. the story doesn't end all happy-go-lucky. as soon as the power was turned back on earlier today, all those people disappeared back into their houses just as quickly as they emerged a few days ago. I can't blame them, I did the exact same thing. fucking AC. I'm just making an observation.

That really kicks ass NOLA.  I'm sure for you, that you probably wouldn't mind if the AC went off for a few days every 6 months so that you could keep ongoing relationships building in your AO, and maybe, just maybe, you'd get to know them, and also keep tabs on any new comers to the neighborhood as well.  It could be a major positive event for networking and helping the rest of the AO to become more self-sufficient (as one can be in a city) and maybe even build somewhat of a resilient community.

Remember GAP and I coming on here and talking about setting up a Swap Meet, Farmer's Market, or starting a "Gardening Club," "Community Beautification Advocacy Club" or other such Community event (Be creative, the name doesn't necessarily have to fit what the club eventually does or turns into) to get out there and meet your neighbors and maybe even accidentally getting them into something that could take one step closer to create a resilient community?

Swap Meet, (Beginnings of an unofficial bartering system) same with Farmer's Market, but also you get to support the local farmer's who will be VIP if the bad times ever come, they will provide a community with food and sustenance if protected and cultivated, while also learning about an unofficial bartering system.  (I'll pull the weeds in this field if you give me six chicken eggs, and one chicken for my family today).  A Gardening Club gets you more "farmers" that are self-sufficient, and if given the land, could actually learn to feed an entire community.  I imagine the local city or county "park" could be converted to farm land when everyone is starving.  No need for parks when people are starving.  Then of course, once you have food, you've got markets and bartering systems opening up as well.  It really is a cycle.

You might just find out who the doctors, veterinarians, mechanics, War veterans, Commo (working for a phone, radio company), electricians, scientists, inventors, armorer's, manufactures of all types, (firearms, ammo, and other engineering), farmers, cattle wranglers, horse breeders, educators, historians, ect. are.

Just a few thoughts that could be expanded upon with your recent observation of what happens with the A/C or electricity gets turned off especially in the South.  Similar things will happen everywhere in the U.S., though I imagine.

Thanks for the observation, its very helpful intel.
