need opinions on streamlining my guns
« on: September 30, 2012, 04:07:13 PM »
when I say "streamlining", I mean getting everything set up for ammo/mag/parts compatibility. right now I only own two handguns. a Glock22 and a SA 1911.

I love my 1911 but it just doesn't seem as practical. If I wasn't such a poor bastard, I'd just buy another handgun, either just another .40, or another Glock22 or 23 just to have two guns that are 100% compatible with each other. Well since I AM such a poor sap, I'm thinking about selling the 1911 for something more practical.

is this a terrible idea or not?

PS, I'm also trying to brainstorm a way for a poor man to acquire a new black rifle without selling my current one. I may not have an option, I'll probably end up having to put all the factory parts back on it and sell it if I want to be able to afford a better one. then just transfer all the bells and whistles to the new one.

idunno, thoughts?

Id say sell the 1911 and put that money towards the second rifle. And maybe even sell the bells and whistles and put that money towards the new rifle and revert the rifle back to factory. Then youll have two rifles, rather then 1 rifle and two sidearms. makes more sense then 2 sidearms and a primary. Focus efforts on the primaries, Just my .02

i kinda sorta agree, and i kinda sorta don't.

i think handguns are just as important simply because of concealability. I've got a woman to consider also. I need at least two handguns so me and my woman can be armed. (I'm talking about right now, not WROL). I usually let her take the Glock and I take the 1911 just because she's much more familiar with the Glock. I can rock either one but she's only effective with the Glock just because she doesn't have any real trigger time on the 1911. she's never practiced with the thumb safety and she's not familiar the the concept of "action". I.E... SA only, SA/DA, DA only.. etc. the Glock is obviously easier for her because there's no "confusing little hammer thingy" to worry about, lol.

ideally in the future, i'll be in a better financial situation and this topic would be irrelevant because I'd just go buy whatever I need, lol.

Dude I understand being broke.. I do but what is the hurry?

You've got a job, you can buy an new black gun one piece at a time. Pay check to pay check.

You can find Gen 2 G22s in the mid $300 range.. save up.

Then you will have two rifles and 3 pistols.. much better.

I am heading in the same direction.

What is wrong with your current AR?  You say you "need a better one", in what way do you need better?  New barrel?  Poor reliability?  I had a gunsmith friend work (file work on the receiver) on a 20 year old crappy Olympic arms rifle length AR I was about to trade away, and now it runs like a dream.  Not my primary rifle, but an extra rifle for someone who shows up without one.

I have Glocks in .40, so I like them.  I am still planning on getting a few 9mm conversion barrels and 9mm mags just so I have additional ammo options.  The wife shoots her G22 just fine, but .40 is more expensive for practice, and 9mm is our group standard.  My wife does practice, so no issues with a pistol malf drills.  But if your gal is not a regular shooter, then how about a .40 wheel gun?

If I were to start from scratch, I would go after Glock in 9mm, AR in 5.56 (for each member in your group), and at lease one .308 bolt gun.

I would sell the 1911, if I were poor and needed the cash for another Glock, but then again I just have no love for the 1911 and no need for another caliber to store.

Just my thoughts,

Wallker

awesome input, Walker. I'm thinking just like you these days. it's not that I don't have love for the 1911, it's just that it's not as logical or practical. As I said before, if I were in a better financial position, I'd just buy another gun to fit my needs and keep the 1911 but I'm not in that position, lol.

honestly, after talking it over with a couple people, I think I'll post it up for sale here on the forums first, and if I don't have any luck here, I'll explore other options. either way, my 1911 is a luxury, and I need to get my necessities straight before I have any luxury items hanging around.

PS, feel free to use this thread to discuss the topic. it's not just about my personal situation. I want others who may be in a similar situation to benefit from reading this thread.

I know what is really happening. You got the " I need a new gun & this one is the only one I'm willing to give up " itch.

Here is how I think about it dude.
I got a rather large group. ( Possibly ) So instead of shrinking my collection down to this or that caliber or style. I'm expanding my collection to as many as I possibly can.

Think large caliber footprint. This way. No matter what I find or come across be it an entire horde of guns & ammo, or just a single stray bullet. I should have something to fire it through.

I would hang onto the S/A dude.

I dont see finding ammo to be very likely. Rather then have odd calibers sell them off and build up stanard caliber ammo supplies. Self sufficient rather then gambling on finding ammo. just buy it now if you have assets in the form of guns in odd calibers. Ones gauranteed ammo the others hope on a theory.

Its kind of like buying strike anywhere matches when the primers are right there.

But .45 isnt odd.

I think you miss interpreted bro. Maybe I stated it wrong or didn't give enough ammo...I mean details.

Alright, lets try this. I don't stock on 30-30 308 30-06 but I have the means to fire it.
Pretty much the only thing I buy is 9mm/ 5.56 / 12 Gauge. That is what I stock and I don't fail to stock it, on that same note. It does not mean I don't have a large caliber foot print to stock on other stuff if the funds ever become available or if I stumble across it. If I got to a yard sale and pick up ten boxes of 30-30 for 5 bucks what the hell good does it do me if I don't have a sender to use it? That's easy stocks right there.

That's just a quick example, but the point still sticks. Don't stock. But have the ability to.

Thanks for clearifying as i didnt think you meant pre SHTF. But my opinion dosent change. Why spend say $300 On a rifle to get $200 worth of ammo savings once in a lifetime. Surely if theres deals on 30-06 theres deals on 5.56. Unless you have enough money that your buying all of the good deals on 5.56 there are to find that buying different calibers will expand your ammo deal oppurtunity just spend what money you do have on the common calibers. and save money your spending on odd guns on more common ammo. For me finding deals isnt the problem. Its having money to buy the ammo. Im not going to buy another rifle to try and stock ammo for. Id look at that rifle with hatred because i could of had more ammo but instead i bought an expensive inefficient baseball bat.

My point is at the end of the day your total rounds stocked with a given amount of money will be greater sticking with common calibers. And youll have the ideal calibers.

Also, unless you are/plan on reloading or your weapon is mother ****ING safe queen, buy steel.  If your weapon can't handle a steel case then its probably not a good SHTF weapon, just my $.02 (gold backed currency only)
