UP'ers use this page to check in. Please post your horror stores and pictures of the first 2014 blizzard called Hercules.
Up at the cabin we got ~ 10" of nice white fluffy stuff. Snow showers still working their way through the region.
Temps outside got down to -3F @ 0600 hrs this morning. A steady -1F now with a 5 mph breeze out of the NNW. Temps inside 68F. I guess I need to throw another log or two onto the fire.
Before I poured my first cup of joe for the morning I snapped this pic with my phone from my front door looking north. :coffeeNews:
So what tragedy befell you and your family?
-
Other than Mr. WPW working from home today because the roads are a little slippery, nothing bad here. We got about 4", but it's light & fluffy. The thing getting us is the cold! It's in the high twenties, but the wind is killer. Our little valley is windy in general, and the wind cuts through you no matter how many layers you're wearing.
Hope everyone is safe & toasty warm.
-
Oh my heavens Wellie...The horror! :hiding: Thank God that you and Mr. WPW are safe and sound. ;)
On a not as sarcastic note - Stay warm and thx for the report
-
:D Well, he just had two weeks of vacation, so there's been a lot of togetherness lately. Ha! I do have an amendment - it's in the mid teens, not high twenties. I think that was wishful thinking.
-
Yeah, mid teens sounds more right. Brrrrr!
I just went out side to brush the snow off of the solar panel, shovel the deck and a path to the truck. All told about 15 minutes and I ran back inside squealing like a little girl. My beard was frozen from my breath and my hands were numb. I will need to dig out my "wind stop" gloves I guess.
The temp is up to a balmy 2F now.
-
That snow missed us, but it's been just damn cold and has been for a while now. Woke up to -12F (that's not the windchill) again this morning. Just another day in paradise, I suppose.
:deadHorse:
-
Brrrrr Crudos! -12F is nothing to sneeze about.
I know that WI. can get damn cold in Jan/Feb. I opened a str in Green Bay in March many years ago. Zero degrees was the norm then...IN MARCH!
What kind of heat are you running in your house?
-
We've had fairly (in Wisconsin-terms) warm winters the past few, but I think this past December was one of the coldest I can remember in a while. There is a certain refreshing crispness to going outside when it's that cold. Get your stuff done outside as fast as possible, and get back inside and warm up. In a shtf-situation, this weather would be killer to alot of people, even those of us used to it as a normal part of winter.
The house uses natural gas, but really need to look into an alternative heat sources, like wood. We have a old (1904) Victorian-style house, but it never had a fireplace, for whatever bizarre reason. On the to-do list.
-
Mmmm. I may have to write an article on alternative heat sources.
-
Nothing major here. Just the normal, driving 54 miles to work one way, on slick roads, and freezing my giblets off. :(
-
Man O' man hj you drive 54 miles one way to your work? YUCK!
I set the alarm to make sure I get up at 0300 hrs to feed the wood stove. The temp outside was -9F, 60F in the great room and 54F in our bed room. Brrrrr! I am going to have to find out where that dang electric blanket is.
-
Oh yall stop crying I work in -20* f with fans running at least once a week for a few hours!! Gotta love refrigeration. Busting your balls but tomorrow (Tuesday) is -15 windchill ambient temp low 3-6* f !
-
Was -19 (without windchill) this morning, has risen to a balmy -15. Gods only know what the windchill temp is/was today. :suicide:
-
WOW Crudos -19F  That's cold!
It was only -5F this morning here at the cabin.
I just heard on the radio that there are places in IL. and IN. that are without electricity. I surly hope those folks have an alternate source of heat. Brrrrrrrr
-
It bottomed out at -5F here. I heard at least 3 "frost quakes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryoseism)"...it was a first for me. I didn't know there was a such thing before last night. It sounded like slightly muted gunshots that could be felt throughout the house. I wouldn't have known what they were if it wasn't for a write-up in the local news. Evidently conditions were perfect... a rain saturated ground followed by the temperature rapidly plunging below zero.
-
Wow, I was awoken by what I thought was a muffled gun shot early this morning. As I laid there I heard another one and figured it had to be due to the cold weather. Now I know! Thanks SK.
Ya' learn something new everyday.
-
-11 when I got up for work this morning, and peak above zero finally later today. Suppose to be up to 37 this weekend.
Go home Polar Vortex, your drunk.
