I would appreciate your thoughts on this vision and mission statement for a company.

Vision and mission statement

Vision
To assist in the development of a community who is more self reliant through supplying services and products which encourage and prepare individuals and organisations to operate and live in a more sustainable manner.

Mission
We strive to assist all members of the community to live more sustainable lifestyles in an attempt to reduce the strain on their wallets, infrastructure and the environment.

We will do this by sourcing the best possible products, services and information at the best possible price from both local and foreign suppliers and do it in such a way that will make sustainability an achievable goal for as many people as possible.

We also aim to uplift the community primarily by educating and utilising a number of it's unemployed and underprivileged members.

Things like that just make we think of unicorns farting flowers and rainbows.  But I would expect it is much more looking toward the low carbon footprint, electric car, no coal, save the whales and end climate change folks rather than more realistic folks like you an me.

At least I think we are more grounded in reality.  But maybe we have gone round the bend.

Hmmm. I was really hoping to appeal to more than just the tree huggers, although they are a large part of the target market. Thanks for the criticism.

I normally would PM you some suggestions however I am going to give you some suggestions in the open so other members may benefit from my two cents. I am a business consultant during my forced early retirement so here goes.

Vision Statements need to be short and lofty. An example might be as short as XYZ Brewery...

Vision
"We strive at XYZ brewing company to sell 50% more beer this year than last year."

How we will do this (Or Mission) will be...

> We will strive to incorporate our employees (Associates) idea's in all aspects of production, marketing and distribution of our beer.

> We will always treat our customers like we would like to be treated

> We will be a good citizen by supporting peewee baseball 

> We will strive to make a superior bottom-line profit to support our employees, customers and community.

So remember, Vision is the goal and the Mission supports the success of the Vision.

Some suggestions for you might be...

Vision
To assist in the development of a self reliant community that will operate, live in a more sustainable manner.

Mission
> Our members will be involved with all aspects of training, planning and purchasing

> Orders will be pooled to acquire supplies as discounted prices

> Regular training seminars will be held to cross train members of the community in all aspects of self sufficiency

> Others?

Last, ignore Nemo's comments as a Vision and Mission Statement is crucial to keep a group of folks on track. When a question or debate arises, reread your original goals and how you will support them.  :thumbsUp:

I was reading from a potential customer aspect rather than a the how to attract customers to my business aspect.  Although they are intended to be very similar, they are often interpreted different.

Primarily I posted this here because I know that even though most of the UP members are similarly minded they hold vastly different opinions on a number of topics and I appreciate all feedback.

I genuinely thought the vision was concise enough, I actually cut it down from almost double what it was.

I understand the purpose of the two statements, however, I seem to have difficulty separating the two.

JMac, I will definitely take your words into consideration when I draw up the next draft.

Nemo, no insult on you it was just that a forum member of high esteem was asking for some advise. I think that Vision and mission statements are valuable for a group, family or company. When a debate heats up over a particular subject and a consensus can't be reached - Reread your mission statement. Everyone needs to be pulling towards the same goal (Vision).

JK, I agree with that some.  But for the most part, IMHO those are silly to have.  But still expected in today's society.

In general the vision of any company is to find the best ways to make as much money as they can with their products.  The mission is to figure out the easiest way to do that as quickly as possible.  They may be worded differently to make that more socially acceptable but that's what they are.

I see alot of that as quite similar to putting your "Objective" as the first entry on a resume.  Generally if you are sending someone a resume your objective is to get a job.  I have never seen a resume (and I doubt seriously you, or HR have) with the objective listed on it as-- to be hired by your company.

You mean "I want to work for you because I'm sick of eating out of dumpsters." won't work?  What's wrong with these employers nowadays?  Do they not understand the economic environment...or do they just want to hire yuppie spawn (a.k.a. trust fund babies, a.k.a. hipsters)??   :P

Of all you mention SK, I dislike the hipsters the most. My wife's cousins, daughters husband is a hipster (Boy is that a ancestral mouthful  :o). When I see him at Christmas time, I always want to "bitch slap" him back into reality.  :DrillSgt:
