Help.
« on: February 04, 2012, 01:48:27 AM »
didnt know where to post this but anyways, for my first vehicle im having a lot of trouble, i dont know if i should get a newer vehicle thats a couple years old or buy a older chevy 1500 like 90s maybe and spend my money on more important things like prepping. what would you guys say is a better choice? i need a truck that will fit a fourwheeler in the back. the reason why im asking is do you think its better to have a newer vehicle that may last longer or a older truck thats less expensive?

I plan to buy an older muscle/classic car and learn how to do everything on myself. It will be my daily driver and I hope to keep it for a long time. Probably do the same thing with a truck from the 70s as a bov and offroading/outdoors stuff. Thats how I plan to go about things.

If your afraid of EMP than a new car isnt the best choice but I dont know how much better off a 90s model will be either. Thatguy said he has a mid 80s bronco that has 300,000 miles on it on a video. If your worried that cheaper older car wont last as long then I think his experience should counter that. Just depends on how well the previous driver treated it.

Im currently in a more frugal mindset though. Best of luck with your decision.

Thanks deathstyle, btw i love the way thatguys bronco looks it just looks like a classic. im really thinking about getting a older truck, most kids these days want new vehicles to show off. i think theres more important things than that.

thatguy i forgot to mention i hate jap trucks, my dad drives a 09 tocama and im not gonna lie its a freaking tank and will go thru alot of shit but toyotas are so small. i think i want a more mid size truck.

what do you guys think of a 97 chevy extended cab? are they good trucks?

broncos are very popular
why i got no fucking clue......

jap trucks are tough but they lack power and it isnt American,  well....  an American brand anyways

ford trucks are great but their 4wd package aint the best

chevy makes a wonderful truck with a good 4wd
dodge makes a wonderful truck and IMO their 4wd's are the best, and they come with the most hp in most cases

if you can swing it get a cummins diesel

but mainly if you actually plan on doing work with your truck BUY A LONG BED TRUCK!

I agree that you want a long bed but I want to get to the meat and vedge of this issue.

The 22R has plenty of power if you are not trying to power an American 1 ton.

Heavy trucks break parts more often than light trucks.

Light trucks get better milage.

Light trucks are easier on tires.

Tires for light trucks cost less.

You don't need a truck to tow a 4 wheeler. A 4 door Honda will tow a trailer and get much better milage than a pick up.

You will never use your four wheel drive unless you are MountainRedneck. It will only be more spinning shit to break.

You need to take economy into account when you are buying a daily driver. I own 3 pickups, a Ford Ranger which is my daily driver. It gets 25 miles to the gallon and I can find new tires for $50-$100 each depending on how good of a tire I want.

I own a F-250 3/4ton extended cab longbed with a 351 cid for rocking down the highway loaded it gets about 16 mpg depending on the way I drive it. That truck is fantastic if you are running down the highway loaded but I HATE driving it to the grocery store because of the way it eats fuel.

I also own a F-350 one ton flatbed duelly with a 300 cid straight 6. This truck is a dog on the highway and gets 8 miles to the gallon but will haul 60 bales of hay out of the field. I can put 4 cords of wood or two pallets of block on it and it will run. I have never 'over loaded' this truck.

Each one of these pickups has somethings that they are really good for and other things that they are really bad for but the point is that I use the one that gets the best economy the most and that economy has allowed me to own other trucks that better fit other roles. If lets say I was to drive the one ton to work and back everyday it would be all I could do just to keep the tanks full. It would absorb my paycheck leaving me with very little expendable income. So think about that when you are looking around. Everything costs something my friend.

not always bro
the guy i work with has a dodge half ton with 690hp, that gets 25mpg
and its the fastest thing on the road

it really depends on your line of work too
i could never use a ford ranger
it just cant do what my other trucks do

i mean if you just want a truck just cause then get either a 1/2 ton or one of them 1/4 tons if you want the gas mileage

but if your really gonna work that bitch get a half ton
and if you do something like tile or landscaping go diesel

as far as 4wd drive goes, its true unless you live where i do or you go looking for trouble 2wd will do you just fine

hell i been driving a rwd car for a good while now to save on gas and even in the storm that hit just now where people went apeshit about the roads i still got everywhere in that car....
if you know your vehicle you can get them to go just about anywhere  8)

The question wasn't "hey dude I lay tile all the time and flatly refuse to get it delivered by the suppier.. what pickup truck is best?"

The question was *read in BWB's voice* (ah dude I got a four wheeler and I want to get a pickup so I can slip a ramp and crush myself under its weight when I load it the first time, what pickup would be best for that?"

lmao, thatguy, i can load a fourwheeler on a truck, my dad actually lets me do it insted since i weigh less than him. and i dont know if i want a diesel even though id like to have one, i think a 1/4 ton chevy or ford would be good enough, my main question guys is should i get a new one or a old one to save money? what about this one? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-CHEVROLET-XTRA-CAB-Z71-4X4-LS-/110817378482?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item19cd3b00b2

Hey BWB, we wore three of those trucks out at my place of work. The doors leak (both air and water) and make a ton of racket. The whole truck is under built for what it weights.

More great advise cast upon the deaf.

I'll throw my $.02 in to this. For what it's worth I plan on either getting an older chevy 1500 or asking my grandfather if I can buy his or inherit his. Personally I'd prefer to get his. I've got a lot of fond memories in that old truck and I'm sure he'd be happy to know it's going to be taken care of. That said, my pap has always driven chevy and I've seen that truck perform through thick and thin. Everything from hauling, pulling tree trunks, plowing in snow storms, to out right hauling ass against a v8 dodge durango. When the driver caught up to my pap at the stop light he asked wtf he put under the engine lol. I'm by no stretch a master tech, but any vehicle is going to have it's problems regardless of where it comes from. Personally, and yes I'm biased as hell being that I work for a Toyota dealer, I'd say screw Toyota up and down. IMHO Toyota >:( Dodge  :-[ Ford :-\ Chevy ;) Nissan [img]http://www.smileydesign.n
