‘Lord of the Rings’ Inspires $3 Billion Crowdfunding Campaign to Build Fictional CityBy Beatrice Verhoeven on August 13, 2015 Architects are looking to build a life-sized replica of Minas Tirith in the south of EnglandA group of architects is hoping to raise $3 billion (£1.85 billion) to build a life-size replica of Minas Tirith, the city featured in “Lord of the Rings,” in the south of England.In a crowdfunding campaign effort, the group describes itself as an “ambitious team of architects and structural engineers who are passionate about creating a beautiful, inspirational and fully-functioning replica of Peter Jackson’s depiction of Minas Tirith, as seen in his Lord of the Rings films.”They believe they can create the biggest tourist attraction in the world, as well as make it a place to live and work. The team hopes to create both residential and commercial properties, with the residences being categorized by their tier, size and quality.Also Read: Andrew Lesnie, 'Lord of the Rings' Cinematographer, Dead at 59The vast majority of the projected $3 billion would go towards construction, with $23.4 million going towards land, $293 million for labor and $2.2 billion for materials. The rest of the money will go towards maintenance and public services, and should keep the facilities in tact until 2053.The project is estimated to be finished around 2023.Rewards for donations include your name on a monument, a free tour of the city, a night at Minas Tirth, street naming rights and the title of lord/lady of the city.If the group doesn’t reach its goal of $3 billion in 60 days, all donations will be canceled. So far, the group has raised $30,921 in 13 days.
