General Supply Chain Issues
« on: September 20, 2021, 02:57:32 PM »
I went today to my local ski shop to buy a new pair of snowshoes and a new cross-country ski rig (thus guaranteeing a snow-free winter here!  ;D ) and the salesman at the store apologized and said the store is usually completely stuffed with inventory right now, but they can't get anything from their suppliers. The store had maybe 20 pairs of cross-country skis in stock, and less snowshoes. He said they expect their pre-season shipment of skis and boots, and they've been told not to count on getting any more this year. I bought the only pair of snowshoes that fit my criteria and were my size on the spot, and reserved a pair of skis and bindings, along with putting the boots and poles on hold until the rest of the gear comes in. Not even other items in the store, like jackets, helmets, gloves, etc., just a lot of empty space and a few racks of stuff.

Next I went to a local "wholesale" food store, they had good stock of meat and vegetables. Meat prices are pretty high, like $3.49/lb for 80% ground beef. Veggies seem about normal, maybe a touch higher. Dry goods and staples are in stock and almost reasonably priced, for now. A 25 lb. bag of long-grain white rice was $16.75. A 25 lb bag of plain table salt was $7.49. 5 lbs of powdered milk was $19.98.

Been to several other big chain stores, food seems in stock if expensive, but general merchandise, clothing, and some other items seem thin on the shelves if they're there at all, and some items I've been tracking for 6 months now have not been restocked in the whole period. This includes dress shirts, work pants, some hardware items, and certain power tools and accessories.

Just thought I'd share what I'm seeing locally, it feels like parts of the supply chain are empty and may remain so, and other things continue for now as normal.

Yes FF, besides higher prices I am starting to see some holes on shelves. One which is odd is toilet bowl cleaner.

I was visiting my Mom who lives just north of Philly last week. I went off to the ACME to buy her a few things. In this particular ACME they have a meat mark down bin that I always checkout. Well the steaks in the bin were 3/8th to 1/2-inch thick. I will not buy a steak unless it is 1-inch thick or thicker.

I wandered down to the regular priced beef and low and behold the steaks there were in the 1/2-inch thick range too.

The meat manager was stocking a bin next to me so I picked up a steak and asked about the thin cut. His response was, "look at the price". For a 1/2" thick rib eye the price was around $12-. The price was $18.99 a LB. He then asked if he could cut me a thicker steak.

This past spring I was looking to buy a canoe. I did my research and decided on a brand and there was a dealer just north of Harrisburg, about three hours away. I called the shop and was invited down to try out a demo canoe. Then the owner of the shop told me they were placing their order with the company by month end (March) but warned me that I would not see my canoe to late August.

I asked why the late delivery date and was told supply issues from Canada where the canoe was made. She went on to tell me that they typically receive two loads of this particular manufactures canoes a season. A spring and then late summer delivery. Not this year she explained.

We all keep hearing from small and medium businesses that the supply chain train is slow and light. I have to bounce between two local mom and pop hardware stores to get electrical parts. Why? Well the orders come in missing part of their order and are marked "back-ordered".

Lets keep this thread going specifically on item outs and supply chain issues. Thx for starting it F2.

I noticed the same situation with meat JM, especially beef. The store I was in did have some steaks that were thick-cut, but the prices were crazy. They had 3" thick tomahawk steaks individually packaged, for a mere $71 each! Another item that has not gone on sale this summer is Maine lobster. Usually a period in the summer where they're at chain grocery stores for around $7/lb, but this summer they've just stayed at the upper limit of "normal" prices. The wholesale store had 2 lb. vaccum packed bags of lobster meat yesterday for $50 a pound.  :o

Shortages are particularly bad in regards to medical supplies of all types.  The manufacturers are having rolling shortages (this week gloves, next week syringes, etc...) and have been for over a year.  Personally I think most of it is created shortages rather than actual, but either way its hard to get supplies.  It's been especially bad in common hospital medications recently. For example, lidocaine (among several others) is on the national shortage list put out by the USDA/FDA. If you're not familiar with it, it's a numbing agent used in most minor surgeries. A great many common items have been placed on an "allocation" system. The *odd* thing is there is usually a version available off the allocation list, at twice the price or more (suprise, suprise). Of course, the suppliers and manufacturers all blame covid...

Wow gents...Milk and medical gear outages? MILK?

Hey, things will only get tougher to find and purchase. I suspect it is part of "the plan".

Yeah FF, lobster prices usually drop right after Independence Day. I have noticed that frozen shrimp and scallops are holding their prices though.

Let us keep an eye towards supply chain issues and prices. Please post on this thread.

Thanks

$5.9M ransomware attack on major agriculture group poses risk to US grain, pork, chicken supply

Attack is believed to have been carried out by BlackMatter, a successor of Colonial Pipeline hacker DarkSide
By Lucas Manfredi FOXBusiness

The U.S. grain, pork and chicken supply could be at risk after a ransomware attack on New Cooperative Inc. has forced the Iowa-based agriculture services provider's systems to go offline.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we have proactively taken our systems offline to contain the threat, and we can confirm it has been successfully contained," a New Cooperative spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal.

A spokesperson for New Cooperative did not immediately return FOX Business' request for comment.

Security researchers say the attack was carried out by ransomware group BlackMatter, which has reportedly encrypted New Cooperative?s data and stolen 1,000 gigabytes worth of files, including invoices, research and development documents, and the source code to its soil-mapping technology. The hacking group is asking for a $5.9 million ransom payment in exchange for a tool to decrypt the data.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

God created Man, Col. Sam Colt made him equal, John Moses Browning turned equality to perfection, Gaston Glock turned perfection into plastic fantastic junk.

I think these big businesses are idiots. They only need the internet to communicate with others inside and outside their companies. They just need to keep all their other records off line on a separate computer system.
