Title: Faraday Shielding of EMP(Electro-Magnetic Pulse)
Post by: pkveazey on November 30, 2016, 06:36:21 PM

The above link, if its still up and running, is an in depth resource for Faraday Shielding. Its a bit of overkill, but I thought I'd post it because there have been some discussion concerning EMP damage to electronics.

Good read pkveazey

Worth everyone's time to read.

That was all fairly well over my head, but I think it got some of it.

EJR914, when you boil it all down, it just means wrap anything that is EMP sensitive in Aluminum foil.

Large shields that do have conductors penetrating the shield - HUH! Please explain what a  Penetrating Conductor is and what it looks like?

I agree with you pkveazey Aluminum Foil is the way to go.

here are two examples.
1)  if you put a radio into a faraday cage to protect it but the antenna is attached to it via a cable to your roof top antenna - that would be a penetrating conductor, the cable running from your shielded radio to the antenna.
2) If you make a 'safe room' shielded from EMP by lining the walls and he floor and the ceiling - you can stack all your stuff in their to keep it safe.  if you have a ceiling light hanging down into the room and that light is attached to your house power then that would be a penetrating conductor.

in both cases the antenna cable and the light power cord can conduct EMP into your protected device/space.

KBOP thanks for the easy to understand explanation. It's one of those "Why didn't I think of that"

@ JoJo  The article was about capacitive coupling and re-radiation.  And an interesting idea about having access to a surge suppressor that could handle an EMP - I'de like to see the specs and price on that!

Nerd alert = "i grok electrons" but needed help in picking out a rifle and glass :)
i'm good with electrical/electronic/RF/Digital/Power transmission stuffs.
think of me as a terp.

Terp?  Whatdahail is that?  I know twerps, nerds, dorks, dweebs and all those things but not terps?

@Nemo, terp = interpreter/translator   :cheers:

So I know a couple gents who do that.  Define GROK and expand my brain a fact more.

No worry, I have plenty of room.  No fear my brain might explode.

Grok is from an SciFi book i read a few decades ago. Stranger in a Strange Land By R. Heinlein
- in our current conversation, i 'understand well' or "Grok" electrons.
I trust your cranium is still intact :)
