The CMP to Acquire Surplus 1911A1s

Possibly. Possibly not. Don't get your hopes up yet. The military still stores around 100,000 1911A1s that they have had since the 40s and it costs them a fortune. The Civillian Marksmanship Program has a chance to acquire these pistols to sell to the public. I have bought a number of Garands from the CMP and they sell quality surplus firearms for great prices. I am chomping at the bits to own a World War 2 era COLT for $500. But we will see. Here is the scoop:

It would be worth stashing a new caliber if they were real cheap.
But so many folks look at the M1911 as a collectors item..
It was a great design for its time and is a cool gun.. but w/ so many modern guns out from a utility standpoint I would buy them only if the price was right

You know these aren't going to be sold for any near under $1000. Lots of other things to do with that much money for sure. It would be cool to have one, but not the pricing I suspect they will go for. And what about all those Garands from South Korea?

I don't think a service grade would be more than $1000 if 100,000 pistols suddenly hit the market. How many people out there would be willing to pay $1000 for a piece of shit worn out pistol?

I am afraid you are correct.
And at that price there simple is not cost-benefit relationship at all for these old guns in , whats now an odd caliber.

And for $800 you can get a brand new Sig Sauer or HK with nitride treated barrels, low maintenance needs etc etc. In 9mm, or 40 cal 357 Sig
etc etc

At what Smith and Wesson MP9s and Glocks available as so much lower pricepoint a M1911 surplused only makes sense to me at the $200-300 pricepoint

Yeah, they are worn out turds that will be high dollar and a new caliber for some and all that-- but they are WWII Colts and there simply ain't nutting better.  And I want 2.

Here's an update to those following:

"The CMP has been authorized to receive 8,000 1911 type pistols from the United States Army.
 
The 1911s have been received by the CMP.  A complete inventory will be conducted over the course of this week. The pistols will then be securely stored until the Army-approved 1911 building and armory infrastructure is completed.  That completion is anticipated to be approximately 60 days from now. Once the 1911 armory is completed, inspection, grading, repair, and ultimately test firing of the pistols will begin. (Please be aware that the CMP was led to believe that we were ready to move forward, but three weeks ago facility requirements were changed, and we are now fulfilling those requirements.)
 
The CMP 1911 order packet will be posted 90 days prior to the order acceptance date and opening sales date. No orders will be accepted prior to that date. Please visit www.thecmp.org, click on the Sales icon then 1911 Information, for the latest. CMP customer service has been inundated with calls and emails concerning the 1911s and no further information is available at this time.
 
The CMP will keep everyone posted as we move through this process.

Service Grade $1050. Pistol may exhibit minor pitting and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition.

Field Grade $950. Pistol may exhibit minor rust, pitting, and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips are complete with no cracks. Pistol is in issuable condition.

Rack Grade $850. Pistol will exhibit rust, pitting, and wear on exterior surfaces and friction surfaces. Grips may be incomplete and exhibit cracks. Pistol requires minor work to return to issuable condition.

Auction Grade (Sales will to be determined by auctioning the pistol). The condition of the auction pistol will be described when posted for auction.



Personally, I am not overly thrilled with the pricing for a luck of the draw pistol. I will wait until they hit the open market and pay the going price for the one I want.

Not trying to be negative in any way.... but $850 will buy a brand new Sig Sauer.. or two of the new gen M&P 9 M2.0....

The guys from my old unit were pretty excited about the CMP getting the 1911's.

Although I do believe that the CMP is gouging the price on these is the quoted prices stay as they are.

A rack grade 1911 is a great platform for working up a solid pistol for combat use. Though as I said is takes a bit of parts and modification.

Our gunsmiths at the Army Marksmanship Unit could really build some nice competition 1911s for our Service Pistol Team and the Action Shooting Team.

Oh do I miss those years. 10 of the best years of my 20 in the Army.

Not taking down the reliability of a rack grade 1911. They are what they are.
