Don't mess with buffalo.  Especially when they haven't been bothered for a fair while.

Woman injured by bison at Yellowstone National Park on second day after reopening
By Janine Puhak | Fox News

A woman was injured by a bison at Yellowstone National Park on Wednesday, the second day of the park’s phased reopening, after getting too close to the wild animal.

The visitor was "knocked to the ground and injured" by the bison in the Old Faithful Upper Geyser Basin on Wednesday afternoon, the National Park Service (NPS) said in a statement. According to the park service, the tourist had approached the animal "too closely" (within 25 yards) when the bison attacked.

Emergency medical services responded immediately and assessed the woman, who refused medical transport.

The incident remains under investigation, officials said. The news marks the first incident of a bison injuring a tourist in 2020.

“Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild. When an animal is near a trail, boardwalk, parking lot, or in a developed area, give it space,” the NPS urged. “Stay 25 yards away from all large animals - bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.”

The legendary Yellowstone reopened its Wyoming entrances on Monday in the first phase of its careful reopening amid the coronavirus pandemic. Parkgoers, however, must heed some new health and safety guidance while visiting.

I have a family member that is a NFWS officer whose region Yellowstone falls into.  It is scary the number of idiots that this happens to every year.  Jackasses think they can walk right up to animals and take selfies.  The only reason it is the first incident of the year is it is the first tourists of the year.

Many many many years ago, MrsMac and I were living on our sailboat in MDR (Marina del Ray) California. During one of our vacations we sailed over to Catalina Island about 30-miles from MDR. We anchored in Cat Harbor which is on the northwest side of the island. Catalina islands claim to fame was it was often used to shoot cowboy movies during the 20's; Consequently, the island has wild horses and bison.

The north end of the island only has one restaurant/bar called the Harbor Reef Restaurant which we ate at one night. Well we closed the bar and as we walked stumbled back down the trail to a dock where our dingy rested we ran across several bison sleeping on their feet. I whispered to MrsMac, "did you ever tip a sleeping cow?" She giggled and said, "no."

Being appropriately lubricated, I gently walked up to the snoring bison and pushed as hard as I could and sure enough I tipped the critter.

As we ran the rest of the way down the trail to the dock, we heard that bison snorting and expressing her/his annoyance of our stupid act. We laughed and laughed as we motored back to our anchored boat.

Obviously, looking back, I would have never done that had I not drank as many "Buffalo Milk" adult beverages as I did.

Recipe  :stir: Buffalo Milk
half shot of creme de cocoa (dark or light)
half shot of kalua
half shot creme de banana
one shot of vodka
