Title: Awkward ignorant hatred
Post by: Kentactic on December 12, 2015, 10:46:47 AM
This may or may not be received well here but I feel like sharing. On a semi daily basis I find myself in a conversation where someone is bashing another race or religion. It makes me cringe. Yesterday a guy at work was explaining that a "terrorist" hit his wife's car. A few days before a guy was mocking how a middle Eastern guy was talking on the phone. It's basically socially required that you think the jokes and the slurs are funny and acceptable. I just give a very weak grin and grunt and move on. 95% are directed at middle eastern people.

I'm all for rational criticisms. "That towel wrapped around his head is impractical for urban environments", "God based religions have zero logical foundation". But the things I find myself hearing is just pure ignorance.

Can anyone relate?

Yes and no.

The yes part first: MrsMac's parents (Now gone to their reward) and my mother & stepdad make racial stereotype comments and slurs all of the time. Mostly directed to Jews and Blacks. When they do I feel uncomfortable mainly do to fact that we have many Jewish and black friends.

MrsMac's parents were dyed in the wool Democrats and union supporters. My folks are your typical WASP's. With that written they all had similar dislikes of the aforementioned races.

We have spoken to them often and ask them to not express their predigests when we are around. For the most part they don't but it slips out every now and then.

Now the no part: I think it is the natural human condition to have predigests against ethnic or religions that are alien to "us." Just by reading the Old Testament we will see that predigest has existed from Adam & Eve time till today. It is when we take the extra effort to purposely come in contact and then mingle with these alien ethnicity's or religions that we loose our predigests.

Me, when I hear a joke that will make me cringe and I can't quietly walk away. I listen, do not make a comment pro or con against the joke, and then just walk away. This seems to catch the eye of the joke teller and minimizes future sharing of like jokes in my presence.

Last Comment: I do not want you to think I do not have predigests because I do. I am predigests against the man or women who is driving with a cigarette or coffee in one hand and a cell phone screwed to the side of their head. I am predigest against the guy or gal who wands me at the shooting range after I point out their pho-pa. I am predigest against the person or person's who judge me based on my political leaning's without taking the time to genuinely try to understand where I am coming from.

I am predigest against those that demand I prove I am not a racist, or some other phobebia, those that judge me because I am not a minority.
I am of Italian decent (not Italian American)and I love Italian jokes. If you can't laugh at yourself then it is you who has the problem.
We have a gay gentileman friend and my wife teases him all of the time and he loves it. He is not ashamed of who he is and can laugh at himself.
Political correctness like multi culturelism is killing people. Your are either AMERICAN or your not.

I'm certainly not a bleeding heart - but i agree with you Kentactic.

maybe its a generational thing - my grandparents (both born in the first decade of the 1900's) were flat out non PC :)
but my parents were further along the scale toward egalitarianism.  Myself - raised in the 60's and 70's - 'live and let live' about covers it.  now that social ideological pendulum seems to be be swinging the other way with some speed.

I can totally understand a "prejudice" based on poor actions by an individual. If you do something stupid, we can clearly see that that person is stupid in that situation. I wouldn't put that in the same category as assuming ignorance or intent etc of an individual, based on physical features, culture or religion. The religion one I can kind of let slide because that is a display of ignorance in itself(not winning any friends with that comment but just being honest). but most times the religion is used in the case of Muslims, as a way of describing a person that looks a certain way and is from a certain place, rather than criticizing the religion itself and is then criticized for simply meeting those arbitrary points. That makes me cringe.

With some more reflection on this I think it almost makes me feel like I'm no longer talking to an equal. They expose themselves as being extremely ignorant and a major disconnect occurs with the uttering of such an ignorant comment. It's like one second it's a person and the next it's a dog that you can't really trust because it's irrational.

Nemo, I love that cartoon!!

So I guess it brings out a basic truth that there is a difference between

1) Acting "like" an idiot
and
2) Being and idiot

Idiots doing idiot things.  lol.  That's really great!   ;D
