Unchained Preppers

I would like to throw out a new topic called 2014: Inflation or Deflation.
Goal:
The goal is to determine if over the next 12 months, are prices going up or down on certain basic household items in our collective AO's.
Why:
I think 2014 is going to be a year of change. Hopefully for the better; however with the reporting of January and February's economic indicators, I think it will be for the worst. Thanks to our busy lives we really do not take the time to look around us and absorb what is happening - Specifically are things increasing or decreasing in price and by what % or $.
When:
The second Monday of each month the folks who participate, are going to report on the price of ten to twenty items commonly used and found in your AO on this subject topic.
How:
Leading up to the second Monday of each month, PREPCOM will send out a reminder to all who are participating. Then that week as you visit stores within your AO, record current prices on the list of items we all agree to. Then post your finding's on this subject line. I will then compile the list and post by the end of the second week of each month. You can compile your own list to keep me honest if you would like.
What:
You need to come up with the list of items. To get the process going here are my recommendations:
> Petrol (Gas) Regular price per gallon or Liter
> Heating Oil price per gallon or Liter
> Propane price per gallon or liter
> Hanes Men's cotton T-Shirts 3-pack
> Hanes women's cotton panties 3-pack
> Jiff Peanut butter 16 ounces*
> Hamburger 80/20 price per pound or kilo*
> Chicken Thighs price per pound or kilo*
> Scottie Toilet Paper single roll
> Bread price per pound or kilo
> Red Potatoes price per pound or kilo
> Fresh green beans price per pound or kilo
> Macintosh apples price per pound or kilo
> Whole milk price per Quart or liter
> Orange juice price per Quart or liter (Brand?)
What are yours? Lets keep the list short so not to be a burden to the folks who participate. I have 15 listed maybe it should be less/more.
In closing, Unchainedpreppers has grown to over 300 forum members with about 30 who regularly participate. The majority of the forum members are in North America. We also have members outside our large AO. Argentina, Australia and the United Kingdom come immediately to mind. With our large audience it would be great for all to see how inflation or deflation is affecting you and others over a 12 month time line.
If you would like to participate please post your suggestions for items we are going to report on by Friday (3/7/2014). I will then take your thoughts and reduce them down to "the list."
Thank you for participating!

I have no way to do the heating oil or propane, but here are my suggestions. (Great idea BTW - give us some hard data to look at, not just anecdotal or memory-based feelings.)
> Petrol (Gas) Regular price per gallon or Liter - pick either one gas station to always use OR three gas stations and average
> Jiff Peanut butter 16 ounces (note: plain Jif, not Simply Jif or Natural Jif - I usually get one of the latter, but for comparison purposes I'd look at the plain)
> Hamburger 80/20 price per pound or kilo
> Chicken Thighs price per pound or kilo (note: I think chicken breasts might be a better choice since they're more ubiquitous with many mainstream people's cooking habits and available recipes, store brand, not Perdue)
> Scottie Toilet Paper single roll (note: I might suggest a six pack - again, I think mainstream buyers typically buy more than one at a time)
> Bread price per pound or kilo (note: price per pound is useful, but I'd pick a brand of bread that is common to most of the country - do they make Wonderbread still? - and count how much one loaf costs)
> Macintosh apples price per pound or kilo
> Whole milk price per Quart or liter
>Tylenol - I have had serious trouble for months finding plain old Tylenol, so maybe a box of Tylenol Cold & Sinus?
>Flour - How much for 5 pounds of flour (I'd suggest King Arthur flour, but that's because I know & buy that brand)
>Sugar - How much for a pound of sugar (Domino brand)
>Cereal - a box of generic Cheerios (generics almost never go on sale or have coupons, same as staples like flour/sugar)
>Coffee - Pick a brand, per pound
I'd also suggest checking spot copper, aluminum, crude oil, bushel of wheat, bushel of corn, cocoa, coffee - these can all be looked up online every week/month. This can tell us if it's the cost of the base commodity and/or price mark ups in the grocery store.
I'm in to track here! I've been thinking about doing it for a while, but never had an impetus to do it.
-
Wellie, if nobody has told you this today they should - YOU ROCK!
Great suggestions!!
Lets hear what other suggest.
-
My thoughts are it's going to be almost impossible to specify a "brand". We all live in different geographic areas and there are going to be "homegrown" brands used. Just for an example, I've never, ever, heard of King Arthur flour. I knew he had a round table at one time and Lancelot was supposedly doin his wife, but down here it's Martha White (like on the Grand Ole Opry), White Lily or Gold Medal flour and corn meal, with a preference to the first. As for some of the "fresh" produce, I can my own green beans and pintos from my garden and have an orchard full of apples, peaches, pears and plums. So I don't shop for those types of things.
I know that the idea behind using a "national" brand to get a baseline, but couldn't generic, as long as size/quantity, be a gauge of the costs of product ? With "local" dairies, there's no National brand of milk. My co-op where I buy my fuel is going to be cheaper than Exxon/Shell/BP. Why I buy there anyway. Just my 2 cents.
As for a list...
Acetaminophen, 250 tabs of 500mg.
Flour per 5lb bag
Sugar per 5lb bag
Folgers (if you need a "national gauge") Coffee per pound
Regular Gas - lowest octane price per gallon
On road (taxable) diesel per gallon (not ag diesel, boy that would skew your data)
Propane price per gallon
Peanut butter 16 ounces
Hamburger ground beef price per pound (I eat the 80-20 or 90-10, but the truer price of beef may be the fat and all, not leaner cuts, which require further processing that adds to the price)
A Whole Chicken
Toilet Paper six pack
Bread price per loaf (again local bakeries to consider)
Red Potatoes price per 5 pounds (even though I grow these, I do buy supplemental)
Whole milk price per gallon (local dairies)
-
Great points brat!
As you wrote, it is OK to pick a local brand if the national is not available as long as your reporting is consistent. We really want to see or get a trend of prices. So if King Arthur is $4.50 for a 5 lb bag in your AO and only Gold Metal is available in your AO @ $3.50 for a 5 lb bag; we are looking for changes in price or size.
On another note: It's to bad that King Arthur is not available in your AO as it is a superior flour (I am a flour snob ).
Great list and thanks for wanting to participate.
-
JM - thanks! That makes my day. :)
Brat, you make some excellent points. Maybe we should stick to generics where possible. Brand names often jack up prices so they can have sales or coupons anyway. My condolences on no KA flour, though. It's top notch!
-
Must be good stuff, although Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs would beg to differ. :trolling:
I can see the replys coming.... Who are they :what:
Nevermind.
-
OK folks we have only three folks willing to check 10-15 basic prices once a month. Who else is going to play'?????????????
Don't let the flour debate scare ya' away. :trolling:
-
I'll willing to check-in with prices. We do most of our shopping at the local regional chain store (Piggly Wiggly), and infrequently at a Walmart SuperCenter (which I despise going to).
-
Thx Crudos!
As you marketing guru's know, in order to get good results on a survey of this type, you need a large sampling.
-
O-Kay, here is our monthly shopping list. Thank you Wellie and brat for your suggestions.
Please keep in mind you do NOT have to buy this stuff. Just jot down the prices once a month and post to this subject line.
Lets try to get those "competitive shops" posted by Thursday of this week. Then starting the second Monday of April and on.
The more people who participate the better ;)
Thank you in advance for all who are participating. :dancingBanana:

I've set up a calendar reminder and will try and get out this week to comparison shop. I typically do my grocery shopping on Saturdays, though, so I may not be able to get the first shop in until next Saturday. We'll see how the week goes!
-
Well I probably won't be able to participate "every" week as we only go to the store about every three weeks or so, plus it's 22.3 miles one way to the market. But this list came at a good time today, cause I just got back. Here ya go.....

No worried Wellie, the first reporting is always a learning experience. ;)
As of this writing the three of us are the only folks playing. I hope some other folks come on board. :what:
-
It'll be another week or two before I hit the grocery store. I'll try to have this list in my pocket then.
-
 SK!
-
I'll be hitting the store in the next couple of days.

Once I get Wellies and who ever is participating I will post the spreadsheet :))
-
Do we want to include our location in this? Even if it's just region, like I'd say "SW PA". It might help to give us a better idea of how prices compare across the country.
-
absolutely! I am actually recording this info onto a spreadsheet separated by person reporting. I like your region idea but will call you mid Atlantic. I will mine New England. Crudos Mid-west, brat?
Thx for the idea.
-
Sounds good!
-
Six pack, but the big, double rolls.

Apparently Mr. WPW isn't a griller ??? Well in all honesty I do not own a propane grill either. Strictly charcoal.
Many mom & pop hardware stores sell propane for those small 5 gallon containers that hook onto many back yard grills. Here's a suggestion: As you drive your normal route keep you eye out for a sign that says "PROPANE!"
Many places post their prices right on the road like what you see for a gas station - Many do not. If they don't post their prices make note of their name/phone #/address and call them. Or stop in to pick up a can of "chew" and ask.
Have you ever kissed a guy who chews tobacco? Well neither have I but I did date a gal A LONG TIME AGO that chewed. YUCK! Man O' man that was a short lived romance.

Check at any local campground. THe vast majority will be able to fill the tanks on most campers. Any Class A "motor coach" type has built in tanks that you have to fill by hose from the storage tank to the coach tank.
About any type camper has a propane fueled stove or furnace. Tifton Ga KOA is $3 a gallon. Been that number for near 5 years and no intent or need to change any time soon.

Cool, thanks! And, no, Mr. WPW is not a griller.
-
JM, I'm in Middle Tenn., so the southeast is my region.
-
O-Kay, attached is our first competitive shop project. A few things you should be aware of.
1) I changed the qty/size of a few items to try and standardize the items. Here are the changes:
> 100 count Tylenol
> 11.5 ounces of Folgers
> Scott Toilet Tissue normal size 6 pack not mega size
> Milk is by quart not gallon or half gallon
> Cheerios is 8.9 ounce box which is standard cereal size.
2) If one or two of reported items did not fall into this category, I did not count them into the average
3) There are three attachments and they show:
> Master, all reported prices rolled up into one screen shot
> One screen shot of the prices in each region. If $0.00 shows for a category it is because you turned
in an anomaly price due to size. Please reference number 1 from above
> The actual Excel spreadsheet I am using.
-
Awesome! Thanks for doing this JM.
-
OK my pencil neck is going to stick out a bit here. On the upper one, with 3 sheets stacked on top of each other, it is a-- Competitive Chop Item.
On the lower list it is Shop Item. I presume it is a typo.
Nemo ???
-
Thanks Nemo for the heads up  The typo will fixed in Aprils report.

I listen to the Audible version of the Wall Street Journal every morning. They had a brief blurb about how increases in grocery prices were affecting the economy. Here's the piece on the website. http://on.wsj.com/1nAEkIZ (http://on.wsj.com/1nAEkIZ)
Morning Editorial Report: Why Food Prices Are Rising - Some drought conditions are man-made.
By James Freeman
March 18, 2014 8:34 a.m. ET
LOW INFLATION, EXCEPT AT THE DINNER TABLE
Tuesday's report on U.S. inflation is expected to show modest price increases. Economists polled by the Journal expect February data to show an annual increase of just 1.1%. But thanks to drought conditions in various regions, food prices are surging.
The Journal reports that "in California, the biggest U.S. producer of agricultural products, about 95% of the state is suffering from drought conditions, according to data from the U.S. Drought Monitor. This has led to water shortages that are hampering crop and livestock production."
But don't give Mother Nature all the blame. Allysia Finley recently explained in these pages how environmental regulations allegedly intended to protect fish like the tiny smelt are diverting water from California agriculture.
Now the federal government expects U.S. retail food prices to rise up to 3.5% this year. This would be the largest annual increase in three years, and would continue a decade-long trend of food prices rising faster than general inflation. Sounds like a war on the middle class.
-
Great post Wellie!
So we will be able to check in our small sampling how prices will change over the next 12 months.
-
Another source for propane prices…

Dayum, Va and NC are the closest to me on that list. I am at $3 a gallon for propane. They are listed at $4.03 and $4.07. Maybe I am not ripping people off enough or something.

Here is a good article with comparison of inflation on food products 1913 vs 2013, (except where noted in the footnote).
http://www.cnbc.com/id/101506892 (http://www.cnbc.com/id/101506892)
-
Thanks DM for posting the article.
One line really caught my eye which basically saw we had a .4% increase in food during February. Half a percent isn't much but if you expand that out over 12 months (All things being equal to February) we are looking for a 4.8% food increase within the next year.
Add to that higher gas prices which is surly to happen based on what is happening in the middle east, Ukraine and not happening here is the States.
Add to that the easing of the monthly Quantitative Easing in April of another $10B (Going from $65B to $55B) and Janet Yellen's announcement yesterday of continued easing on the monthly QEing through September of this year (Maybe $10B a month).
Add to that the economic downturn the Chinese economy is seeing.
Add to that the resent discovery (Admission) that the Russian government in 2008 was planning with China to dump US Treasury bonds on the market.
Add to that US and EU weak response to the Russians taking over Crimea and subsequent (Prediction) other annexing former Soviet states.
We could see Jimmy Carter era inflation rates of high single digit to moderate teens by year end.
For kicks and giggles lets throw into this stew the following:
> November elections in the USofA
> Man made drought in CA. (Darter fish) which has closed 1/5th of farming area of for the country
> $17.6T in national debt and another
> $210T of unfunded debt, e.g. Fireman, police, state workers, federal workers, teacher,......Retirement
funds
> Countries already trading using only gold, e.g. China, Australia, Iran, to name a few not petrodollars
> What am I missing?
Again folks, you are living history here. Take a minute and turn off "Dancing with the stars" :dancingBanana: and do some research on economies that have fallen recently (Within the past 100 years) and in past history (Rise & Fall of Roman Empire). Make a time line of these earlier economies from start to collapsed and determine where you think the USofA, EU, China, Russia are on that timeline.
I know I sound like chicken little here :deadHorse:
-
Our gasoline costs will rise in the near future with the seasonal switch over to summer blend fuel components, say $.25 / gallon or so.
-
Yup DC...
-
Don't know how I missed this thread, this is awesome!
However, I never do the shopping. I did once, and the wife forcibly prevents me from grocery shopping again. Apparently, I don't get the right stuff. Hey, hamburger buns are hamburger buns. :what:
If I'm ever allowed to shop again, I'll hop in on this.
-
Thx Rah
I just printed out the list and gave it to my wife to fill out while she was at the str. Works good BUT she came home with more stuff then she was planning on buying.
Many women spend money on diamonds and furs not MrsMac. To her a supermarket is better than Tiffanies.
-
I use Scott toilet paper and I can't recall seeing a 6 roll pack in any brand... ever. I've only seen single roll, 4, 12, 16 & 24 roll packs. Could we change it to something more common like a 4 or 12-pack?
-
Yupper...I agree. What size do you want SK?
-
They seem to have the Scott blue labeled 4-packs everywhere.
-
Done! I will make the change today. Thanks
-
So it is that time again food shoppers to get prices for the ongoing research to see if food prices are going up or not and by what %.
Attached is your updated shopping list. Please post your prices here and I will compile the info. If you could do by weekend, I would appreciate it.
Thanks!

A friendly reminder folks, we only want regular prices NO SALE PRICES. ;)
-
I've been reluctant to post on this topic for a while because the participation is admirable. :bravo:
But the thing is prices are subjective to the consumer not imputed by the retailer and producer. So at all those stages it's dependent on the opinion of dozens of people not mentioning taxes, regulations that differ from state to state.
That's the whole premise of inflation your money becomes worth less because it is seen as there being more off.
Now with regards to your experiment. Your item pool is too big if inflation is what you are after not other market fluxuations. I would recomend removing any subsidized commodities as that it's self causes inflation but won't be reflected in the price.
These would be: Beef, Cereals (corn, wheat, etc), Sugar.
Toilet paper & potatoes are US produced and stable staples. Peanut butter is stable but imported.
Also with regards to price sourcing you would need a wider selection of several different stores and take the average of those as your price. (removing the SALE issue).
Now getting the kind of results you want from this is going to take a lot of time. but what you will be able to see (and which would be entirely fascinating) is: "Temporal Monetary Disequilibrium"
Say Special-K lives next to the head Boeing manufacturing plant & office (a massive recipient of your freshly printed dollars) His staples would inflate faster then J'mac's who lives far away from that new money, and the people around him have not had that "wow there's a lot more money around" moment.
Picture the US as a big pond and you are throwing pebbles in it, the ripples are the prices adjusting to you adding more to the mix.
-
All good points Burt.
The main reason I started this was hoping that people would under stand what is happening in "their" neck of the woods. If you go to page 2 of the spreadsheet you will see individual results. Page 1 is just a roll-up of all reports.
So for an example...
Crudos finds himself at his local watering hole The Madison Progressive Tavern and gets into a debate with a local student from the college about taxation & inflation. He will be able to speak from facts because he is doing his own research. I am just keeping the info for him.
I want people to be able to speak from facts not, "I think food prices are going up" but "My food prices are increasing by X% because I am keeping records."
Last it is fun to see what people are paying around the country for the same things. :)
