Jobs?
« on: January 20, 2012, 10:04:51 PM »
So I don't know who all here is employed or unemployed, but I've got a gripe. I'm going on six months of being unemployed and I've only had 2 freaking interviews.  ::) I've made a good number of contacts, sent my resume practically to the moon and back, and I understand unemployment is high (higher than what the media says). Here is my problem though. I keep getting emails or responding to job ads where when I call I'm told they're not hiring.........even though they are the ones that contacted me or just posted the available position.  ??? Has anyone else suffered this experience or am I the only one chasing his own shadow?

What I've found is that the same companies promote the same jobs over and over and over again on the online job sites.  No they don't seem to be actually hiring.  I was told they get a tax credit of some sort by advertising jobs regardless of whether they are actually looking to hire.  It's got something to do with some legislation that was passed last year.

It is extremely aggravating.    >:(

That's crap. So the "jobs that are out there" we keep hearing about are really tax breaks for corporations. How freaking lovely for them.

I have been unemployed since Oct 2010- Fifteen months.  [img]http://www.arrse.co.uk/at

I have had three phone interviews and one face to face. I too have sent out umpteen thousand resumes. About 50% of them I get a nice rejection letter usually saying, "You are over qualified." IMO, code for "You are too old."

I have finally figured out that I will have to make my job. I have been working as a consultant to a small company who is designing small boat dollies, racks and trailers. I will take my salary / consulting fee out of the back end when they sell.

I am also working with another small business who wants to expand but does not know how. Hopfully we will meet next week to close the deal.

If and only IF I felt that my earlier predictions; that 2012 will be the year that changes everything (Economy, US Constitution, Etc.) were bogus, I would open my own shooting sports / prepping store.

The reason I am bringing this up is that sometimes you just have to "do it yourself."  :))

Hey WW, you like growing things. Is your backyard big enough to grow veggies to sell at a weekly farmers market? If not is their piece of property you could lease (Exchange land for veggies)?

Sledge, I know that you have some retail security background. Can you start a small business where you consult with some local Mom's and Pops? You could offer your services from consulting on: Identifying a shoplifter, dealing with a shoplifter, camera's, etc.

I hope that I am not stepping out of bounds here saying that you may have to hire yourself.  :))

I've been thinking about that JM.  Actually, retail security was just one of the hats I wore.  I ran stores and opened new markets with 3 companies.  I was with Albertson's  right after the Gov through the Justice Department forced  the split of Skaggs Albertson's when it was deemed a monopoly.  It's funny now but at the time people weren't used to seeing non food and food products in the same store.

Afterwords I worked for a company in NJ called Caldors.  They went bust after I left.  I ran the Eatontown store in Monmouth Mall and then the stores in Bricktown, Toms River, and Manahawkin.

After that I went with Walmart to get back down south.  I opened and ran stores for them for years.  When they decided to start opening Super Centers they moved me to that division and I started opening those when they first started.  I eventually opened the first one in Florida in Sebastian and have been in the sunshine state ever since.

Later I decided I wanted a change and moved to production in Citrus.  My luck is that the company went bust after 10 years during a bad economy because of funding issues regarding the banks tightening up.  The owner had every dime he had, 2 million, invested in the plant and he took a beating.

I'm not giving up yet, but I don't have to tell you guys this economy sucks and frustration is your constant companion when looking for a job.

Thanks JM. I've been thinking about it for awhile. I was originally thinking about guns and gunsmithing, but honestly I'd rather not now. Over the past year, as I've said before, since I've noticed the strong emergence of nationalism I've deemed it better to not support or sell to individuals I don't feel are morally fit to own those firearms. I've thought about growing and selling. There's a guy down the street that has a solid acre he does this on and he's making good money with that. My area is about half that size, but I'll be starting up some different things than he has. Also I've been thinking about selling some of my paintings.

Nothing much man. I paint landscapes, animals, and absolutely NO ABSTRACT.  :)) I was privately trained in a few methods when I was in high school. I don't do it as much anymore, but it's like riding a bike so nothing I've lost.

Hey Whitewolf, we may be hiring soon where I work soon.  The starting pay is commensurate with your level of education and experience.  Raises come quickly where I work.  But it takes a special kind of toughnesss to work at a biodiesel plant.  The downside is that you would have to move to Southern Indiana.

I'd be there in a heart beat if my wife was willing man. I think I'll be lucky just to get her to move 2 hours from here up to the mountains.

Just remember WW, nothing has to be for ever.  :))

If the money works for you maybe you could get a room for $100- a week there and go home occasionally for a 3-4 day weekend.

My wife and I moved in together in '76. Nothing was really happening work wise so we pulled up anchor and moved to Seattle (Yup Philly to Seattle). My father was living on Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor at the time. We lasted about 7 days there as my wife didn't get along with my fathers wife. So we ended up in Seattle.

The moral of this story is we moved back to the NE area in '97.

Again, nothing is for ever.  :))
