I've looked into aquaponics, as it interested me a lot because of the reasons you mentioned. My father in law, who is an excellent gardener, thinks the system won't work, partially because that many fish needed for fertilization of the two rows of plants won't survive in such a cramped space.

I'm very interested to hear your results, though. My environment in Georgia is very humid year round, hot summers, usually mild winters except for a month or two, usually sunny year round, and fair amount of rainfall.

Being in a flat I'm a little limited to in terms of scale so mine is purely experimental but my cousin finally has his system up and running and it is working a charm.

In a pond of 2m×1.5m×1.5m with about 30 Tilapia (they're going to have to start eating them because they're growing quite rapidly) they have almost 50 plants (of different maturity and types) growing from that water. At this point he is still using store bought feed but we are looking at ways to fix that.

It sounds like your climate is rather similar to ours.

Cleaned my base of fire weapon system.

She'd been sitting in an evidence room for the last five or so years after being fired. If I had to judge by the cosmoline still on it. I'd say only about a magazine was fired through it.
That being said the magazine that had been fired through it when not cleaned for that long of time left some pretty sad marks internally. Took me about an hour to get the gas piston out. The gas block felt like it was welded shut. Eventually I got it out and cleaned. Now she's soaking in CLP and bore butter all over. She's nice looking now. Ready for a test fire and another cleaning.

Right on RvR!

Canned 7 qt's of PA., Freestone peaches. Enough to make 7 German peach pies (Tortes). Nothing better than a Kurz Peach Pie in the middle of the winter when the snow is flying side wise.

Be ready for that this winter.  According to the Old Farmers Almanac.

Quote
Old Farmer's Almanac predicts freezing temperatures, more snow
Published August 16, 2015, Associated Press

CONCORD, N.H. –  Just when you thought you had gotten over last winter, be warned: The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts it will be super cold with a slew of snow for much of the country, even in places that don't usually see too much of it, like the Pacific Northwest.

If you don't want to read about those four-letter words, there's plenty more to peruse in the folksy, annual book of household tips, trends, recipes and articles, such as animal jealousy, the history of shoes and anticipation for the biggest Supermoon in decades in November 2016.

Otherwise, look for above-normal snow and below-normal temperatures for much of New England; icy conditions in parts of the South; and frigid weather in the Midwest. The snowiest periods in the Pacific Northwest will be in mid-December, early to mid-January and mid- to late February, the almanac predicts.

"Just about everybody who gets snow will have a White Christmas in one capacity or another," editor Janice Stillman said from Dublin, New Hampshire, where the almanac is compiled. It's due out in the coming week.

The almanac says there will be above normal-rainfall in the first half of the winter in California, but then that will dry up and the drought is expected to continue. "We don't expect a whole lot of relief," Stillman said.

The weather predictions are based on a secret formula that founder Robert B. Thomas designed using solar cycles, climatology and meteorology. Forecasts emphasize how much temperature and precipitation will deviate from 30-year averages compiled by government agencies.

No one's perfect, and some meteorologists generally pooh-pooh the Almanac's forecasts as too unscientific to be worth much. The almanac, which defends its accuracy for its predictions overall, says its greatest errors were in underestimating how far above normal California temperatures and Boston-area snowfall would be, although it did predict both would be above normal.

The record-breaking winter in Boston dumped more than 110 inches of snow on the city. The almanac doesn't call for as much this year.

The 224-year-old almanac, believed to be the oldest continually published periodical in North America, is 26 years older than its closest competitor, "The Farmers' Almanac," published in Maine and due out later in August.

If you need a second magazine, its time to call in air support.

Canned 8 pints of squash/zucchini mix.

I am shooting for 24-36 pints each of:

> Green/wax beans
> Carrots
> Turnips...

By the time my garden gets done.

I have split a cord and a half of ash. Have 2 1/2 cords to split in store for me.

Then I will cut up and split an oak tree that came down last fall on the border of my property.

Anybody interested in helping Johnymac stack ~7 cords of wood for the winter?  :violin:

Picked ~5 bushels of apples. I kept the best ~1 1/2 bushels, neighbor took out another ~1 1/2 bushels and the rest will go to the bacon seed. There is another tree we will hit then I am done picking apples till next year.

Reduced 40 #'s of tomatoes down for pasta sauce. This came out to only 12 pints of pasta sauce.  I like thick sauce.

Have canned 24 pints of summer squash and froze a pecks worth of green beans separated in 6 oz bags. I par boiled them for 3 minutes and then put them into an ice bath to shock before I bagged and froze. I need to do one more peck.

I split 5 cords of ash that was dropped off from from a local logger. Just stacking it now.

Have most of my 2016 seeds drying.

Next month I will drop off my 4, 5 gallon Charboys to a local cider mill to start my hard cider for next year.

My half a steer should be coming in the next couple of weeks so I have made room in the freezer for it. I have two pig heads in the freezer so I need to make scrapple (Amish sausage made with corn meal) in the next several weeks before that shows up.

MrsMac and I have been busy here at the redoubt.  ;D

Jmac, it's a McCormick 4x4, sync shuttle 12x12 with 38hp and 31hp on the pto. It took me almost two years to drive to all the dealers and test them, and I drove them all, except a Deutz-Fahr, hard to find down here. Also spec'd them all. The deciding factors for me was it came with dual remotes, rear work light, foot shields as standard equipment. Plus it had the highest pounds of 3pt lift and front end loader lift of the comps and most importantly it has the Mitsubishi 4 cylinder motor. Really sips fuel for the torque output. On my field, I can run an 8 foot single spindle bush hog. Oh yeah, they also had the free quick attach front end loader deal going on when I bought it. Has a standard quick attach 5' bucket on a Bobcat plate as well. So yeah, I'm real happy with it. Especially now since it's paid for as of July 2015.

Close, and I mean real close, was Kioti, but a little higher price and no loader deal, but they had the longest warranty. Dealer was also 30 miles further back then. They have a neat little rear remote for the 3pt so you ain't gotta do the reach around when changing out and hooking up. Should be standard on em all if you ask me.

I don't reckon I'll ever get another tractor, although those a/c cabs are tempting when in the hay at my age. But if I was a tradin today, I'd look real hard at McCormick again, Kioti, LS and Yanmar and personally wouldn't look any further. Of those, I'd say LS may be the most bang for the buck, but which ever of those has the best deal and dealer, doubt you could go wrong. And I'd make 'em throw in a pair of Pat's quick hitches so I don't have to go buy another set. That's another thing that should be standard. Handier than a shirt pocket.

Good luck APX!

Before I went to RI, I plowed my garden and sowed it with winter rye.

With 3 cords of wood stacked, 3 more to go. YUCK!

Had to start a fire last night in the wood stove because it was 61 degrees F when I got home to the cabin @ 1800 hrs yesterday. I asked MrsMac how long has the cabin been this cold? She told me, "Since you were gone." She went on to explain that it was just too much bother to light and keep it going so I wore some extra layers of clothes.

Hey!  So I know been dark for a while but I've been insanely busy!  Preps aren't looking great but I have still been actively working on the issues I had with the aquaponic system.  mrsninja insisted that we have to go bigger so now I need to build a whole damn structure on my balcony but today I finished the design and started searching for the materials so, hopefully, by December we should be able to grow a large chunk of our greens on a 1x3m balcony with a vertical column system and we'll be running the pumps with solar power.

  Indeed Jmac, I can think what I like but I know, at the end of the day, she's actually the one in charge around here.

APX, good move on the Krava maga.  I've actually found an instructor near me again and think that I should get back to it too. Due to my back I know that I can't step back in a ring again and even Taijutsu causes severe strain if I train frequently. Even though the actual training sessions for Krav Maga can be strenuous I have even seen old women in not the best shape use it's techniques effectively and I did enjoy the limited training I had some time ago.

Took a rather important step in making my obsessions an income today. Still a few procedures to go through before we know for sure but it looks promising. If all goes well, by early 2016 I will be the authorized vendor in my area of a number of alternative energy products as well as a number of defence and security products ranging from less lethal weaponry to plate carriers to telemetry based automation which can be used for access, security, agriculture (guess what's going to run our pumps on the farm).
This will be huge for our preps because not only will it insure a more sustainable income it also gives me access to discounted goods, contacts in various fields of training, firearms and sustainable development, to name a few.

On the negative side my Bug out vehicles transmission is toast but I'm taking it as a blessing in disguise because I have been considering something with a bit more off road capability so maybe I'll fence it and start looking for a compact off road vehicle. Or maybe even work on the solar buggy a bit  ;D (unlikely).

Bottled the last 4 cases of 2014 hard cider.

Cleaned the carboys and they are ready for 2015's cider. I am going to use "English Cider Yeast" this year.
