Yesterday MrsMac and I bought:

> Four feeder pigs (Bacon Seed)
> 100 lb's potatoes (50 Red/50 Yukon)
> 10 lb's Spanish onions
> 8 qts green beans
> 4 qts carrots
> Assorted winter squash and end of summer vegetables.

We hope to get permission to pick another neighbors apples close-by. Free apples taste sweeter like free wood is warmer when the snow flies.  ;)

That is beautiful Jmac...  :'(

What have I been up to?
Slapped a sling on my SU16C.
I've put night sights on my mossberg 500.
Night sights on my full size and compact SR9 pistols.
Also replaced my hand guard on the FAL with one half the weight.

Got 2 more 5kg canisters of lp gas.
Started putting together a few much smaller first aid kits for the car and get home bags.
Discussed the possibility of setting up a few raised aquaponic gardens on some friends properties and sharing the harvests.
Doing some much needed maintenance on my cars.

Every time that I've thought I could get one something came up. But I want one of the concealable compression vest carriers, even though they're not as effective I find that they fit my style of operating better.

Cool APX!

I picked up 20 gallons of unpasteurized apple cider today. Tried a new supplier as my usual orchard closed down earlier than normal due to a 50% less apple yield this year. The owner...Jayne, recommended this other place to go to about 60 miles south of the cabin.

So I tried Jayne's suggestion and dropped off my 4, 5 gallon carboys several weeks ago. I always ask for the last pressing of the year because of the higher sugar content in the apples. Sugar = alcohol  ;)

Got a phone call last week telling me the carboys were ready to pick up and the cost would be $110- ($5 a gallon). My response was to the young lady..."For 20 gallons of unpasteurized cider you are going to charge me market price? You are smoken something and it ain't apple leaves. You and your father need to sharpen your pencil or I will pay the $110- and dump all 20 gallons in front of your retail operations front door and watch it freeze."

MrsMac and I picked up the aforementioned cider today. When I asked for the price, Mr. Father said, "$4.25- a gallon or $85- for you Obama voters. I explained to him that I have NEVER PAID more then $3- a gallon on a bulk purchase of unpasteurized cider. He then said, "OK...OK...$4- a gallon."

I told him OK but I would let Jayne know that his prices were terrible.

Mr. Father then asked me if I was going to pour the cider out in his drive-way and watch it freeze? I broke out laughing and told him "no". Payed him his $80 phuken dollars: Loaded up and headed back to the cabin.

On the way home I got an unexpected lecture from MrsMac concerning my bullying people on price. Her lecture centered around inflation - It is real and happening and I shouldn't bully small business men and women on price.

During the lecture, she also referenced a neighbor who I purchased my last chunk of wood from for the wood stove. He told me he would sell me 160 cf (Cubic feet) of seasoned wood in the 20-22" length no larger than 6" diameter for $150-. He delivered and once it was stacked, it was ~130 cf and there was about 10 cf of scrap.

Called him up and explained to him he was short 40 cf (Man O' man it sounded like a drug deal gone bad. I will not go into detail but that always ends badly for the seller when I'm involved) and asked what his plan was to make up the difference. He apologized for the miss-calc and dropped off the stove wood while we were picking up the cider today. Good deal.

During the never ending lecture from MrsMac today, I said over and over the old JohnyMac Mantra... "Yes dear you are right...It will never happen again...  Yes dear you are right...It will never happen again..."  ;)

Recently purchased a decent paintball pistol with extra co2 and a few dozen rounds consisting of pepper and solid nylon ''riot control" balls. Taken it out to the range a few times and I have to say that seeing that nylon rip up the targets makes me really not want to be on the business end of this thing.

Also we're ankle deep in the shit here in the asshole of the world so I've seen some of my preps come in handy and I've also gotten to see where I'm lacking in a few departments. The last couple of months have been sort of a trial run for a real SHTF scenario.

Nothing monumental has happened, it's just business as usual here in the deep south but that's the problem.  As I've mentioned in the past we never operate at full capacity here, we always have a system that is down but lately it's all been coming together in a perfect shit storm. As I post this from my phone we are in the dark. The country's power has been intermittent for years but the frequency of down time is increasing. Many areas have been without water for days at a time, some even weeks. We currently have a serious lp gas shortage. Our postal service is gone. Public transport barely exists. Funding for government hospitals has been cut. And on top of this I predict an attempted coup is on it's way. About a year ago the more aggressive militant members of the ruling party broke away. These are the people who encourage their followers to murder our farmers so that they can take the land by force and are calling for the nationalisation of all assets. Lately they have been physically attacking members of parliament and calling for the removal of the president and I feel that before long they will attempt to get rid of him themselves. :tinfoil:

I got myself an early XMas present - a bianchi holster for my 9mm - a military hip style with a flap.  nice and functional.  I realized with winter here I needed a way to open the flap with gloves on - a pull down D ring - so I put a paracord sinnet with a lanyard knot at the end.  It is going on my LBE  :boltAction:

Got one and love it, Keep in mind though that 100% of your retention depends on the elastic band inside of the flap that you release with that D-ring/hook. It will wear out over time and can be replaced without to much effort. (if you have the banding)

Got 2 obsolete 600va/360w UPS that were headed to the bin at work. Repaired the one with minor replacements, the other is in slightly worse shape but the inverter is still good so I'm going to Frankenstein it into a solar charger. Got a load of ammo and co² for the TiPX. Put away some more water.

Great thinking digi! You've got the gears grinding in my old brain!

What's the output on the battery charger part of that unit?

I'm thinking that a guy could rig up a car battery or two and have a cheap home brew mobile power pack..

I still have to test it (even though Google would probably be quicker) but I have the same idea and theoretically it should work with any 12V battery AS A CHARGER. My biggest concern is running it as a power supply with a larger battery, seeing as most residential UPS are designed to run for short periods of time and it may overheat (possibly catastrophically).

I'm working on finishing my portable solar powered battery power pack. Mine will only provide 12v, 5v USB and charge AA and AAA batteries, with that I can run a lot of shit GPSs, radios, lights, tablets, hair trimmers etc.

I have seen on the web bigger rigs with inverters, but you lose portability.

I'll make a nice DIY post as soon as I finish getting the components.

Re: What have you done to prep today?/Dexter Cow
« Reply #548 on: December 16, 2014, 07:54:07 PM »
I helped my neighbors pick up their Dexter cow today today.

I will write-up an article on it tomorrow once I get some pics.

Trixie (The cows name) is a sweetie. She is 3 years old and has already had a calf. She is pregnant now and is expected to drop a calf in January. I have dealt with cows and bulls off & on during my time on this earth. With that said -She is VERY people friendly and seems not at all to be afraid of two legged critters.

She likes me as I gave her some "cow crack" to help her move into her new digs today. Cow crack = A mixture of cracked corn, wheat & oats and a tad bit of molasses. I don't see the appeal but what ever works  ;)

More to come...

Get another cow and a bull.  We got an excellent price on some Jersey bulls about 18 months ago.  Cheap to let eat in the back field and spend a month in a smaller field eating a bale of hay day.  Local bakery sells stale stuff cheap and they love it.  Got 515 pound of excellent beef into the freezer for 65 cents a pound and a great hide to play with and try to tan and cure and stitch up into stuff.

Side note, the rear half of the hide has been cut into a piece I plan on making a vest from.  It also still has the tail attached and should work out just where it should be, if I were permitted to keep the one I was born with.  So when you see me here posting as Nemo the Bull, you will know it worked out great.
