I scored a Coleman 2 burner, 502 1 burner, lantern, 2 sets of Bushnell binos, 3 gunsmithing books, 1g of kerosene and one gallon of white gas for less than donuts and lunch last weekend.. I love estate sales!

I just bought food for my girlfriend and me that will last for a year at least in a wholesale shop, and I got it for a 30% cheaper than in a retailer.

Storing food in high inflation economies is one of the best investments, we are having an inflation of at least 35% around here.

I got:

6 kg of noodles
12 kg of spaghetti
12 cans of tuna
15 kg flour
10 kg of sugar
5 kg of lentils

And a shitload of toilet paper and toiletries among some other stuff in smaller amounts.

Good thing about having so much inflation is that you can tell your girlfriend you're storing the food as an investment instead of telling her is for TEOTWAWKI  :lmfao:

RIGHT ON APX!

I am assuming that what you purchased will augment what you can buy during that year.

Good deal APX

I spent all day Saturday and Sunday canning. Put up 19 quarts of cabbage. 10 quarts of zuchinni. Prepped and froze three gallons of blackberries and canned 7 quarts of green beans. Trouble is, it starts all over again this weekend. Whew..... Can't wait for the corn,  :sarcasm:

Also scored two 275 gallon water containers, food grade and once used. $75 each was ok by me. Got a neat little metal cage around them. Got the well fired up and one is now filled. Made up a working solution of sodium hypochlorite and treated.  Shoulda used some type of filter, but I was a little anxious about getting one filled. After checking today, all the sediment has made it to the bottom and everything is clear. I'll just have to filter it on the back side now. So, now I'm gonna finish cleaning out the second one and rig up some type of filter before filling. I feel like I can take my time with this one since one is full, in case something happens  :tinfoil:

I'll just make that first one my backup...lol. If I have to go thru the first 250 gallons, having the last 250 gallons a little dingy will be the least of my worries.  :zombie:

Yesterday I bought arrows and strings and a pocket press adapter for my bow. Very expensive but it should be well worth it! Silent hunting is my favorite way to hunt!

brat,
not criticizing just fishing for knowledge...

I tend to can in pint jars (16 oz) vs. qt (32 oz). The reason is 1 pint feeds both my wife and I with a tad left over. Why are you canning in 1 qt sizes.

Thanks

Great question John, I even can some stuff like red Chile in half pints because I've had bad weeks where the chile went bad in the fridge.

This may be controversial, but here goes. I count it as a plus, overall. My wife has agreed to go armed when traveling to her new job in ATL. (Yay!) Convinced her that she needs to be able to last for 2-3 days without help if something bad like the recent ice storm happens. Because we don't have the extra dough, I'm selling my shotgun and shells to my father-in-law for $400, which should get me most of the way to a compact or subcompact pistol for her.

I'm also selling a lot of Xbox 360 stuff collected over the years, several hundred dollars worth, for $300 or so. Or several like new paintball markers, with gear, for $200 or split product/price.

Not that I think anyone here is interested in the latter. :-D

My rationale is I wasn't going to be carrying two long guns and ammo types if something happens. Wife won't use shotgun, can't handle recoil. So it likely won't be used...so I don't need it. I WILL use a subcompact pistol, though.

Thinking about a S&W Shield.

rah, check out the Taurus Millennium G2 in 9mm for a subcompact option. Prices have been dropping rather nicely on them. Awesome carry piece and it's 12+1.

Yep, I am on the fence about it. I have seen your review thus far, and have been weighing it against the negative reports of jamming, etc. on the internet. Not discounting your opinion, and not trusting random people on the net. Just trying to make a good decision. What I really need to do is find a place that carries both the Millennium and the Shield, and get my wife to hold them and see what she thinks.

She says the Glock 26 her uncle has is too thick for her, as is my Sig SP2022 (though to be honest my hand barely goes around it and I need to find a thinner backstrap/grip).

I recently picked up a Taurus TCP in 380auto and it's a smooth shooter.
the weaker 380 makes for a comfortable and controllable sub compact pistol.

Rah, also check out a charter arms or Ruger sp-101 wheel gun. My wife loves hers.

Personally, I haven't heard of jams or malfunctions more so than any other similar firearm brand. Taurus really did their homework on this one. Great idea to actually see them in-person. You both might be pleasantly surprised by the new Taurus. Good luck!

Thanks! Also, thanks for your review in the other thread. It's the only reason I'm considering this model.

JMAC... The quarts, when pressure canning my cabbage, are only about three or so 2" wedges, plus leaving the 1" headspace. Since I raw pack it, you just don't get as much as you'd think in there. It cooks during the canning process and all you do is just heat and eat.  I don't spend the time to hot pack nor cube it to smaller sizes. It's about a meal for me and the wife with other stuff. Works out just right for cabbage soup during the colder months.

Now the beans, these were quarts for meals with parents, kids, outlaws and such. Pints for green beans, like you, is about right for two. I had quarts coming out the a....uh, dishwasher, and that's what I used this time cause they were there and so were the beans.  The zuchinni is shredded and also a raw pack and we use that for zuchinni bread. Recipe calls for three cups. It's also about right.

Cool brat...Thx.

Now the only place I can find canning jars reasonably priced was Target. About $9- for a case of 12 in pint and $11- for quart jars.

My neighbor up at the cabin has been buying his jars from local garage/yard sales for pennies on the dollars for the past several years. He has quite a collection of jars.

I want to try making kimchi and sauerkraut this year with our cabbage.

Last, we have not seen any veggies from the garden as yet. A lot farther north brat then you. August/September will be OUTRAGEOUS though!

Downloaded a few more tutorials and handbooks and did some other work on my barter items. Started working on my solar grow box, focusing on using as much repurposed material as possible to make it an easy to acquire and construct project. I'm going to keep a build log so if it works as it should I'll give you guys a DIY post for those who are interested.

Did a touch of inventory.  Dayum I am alot better off than I thought.  Original estimates of some ammo was about 1/3 of stock.  I guess I need to write stuff down rather than try to remember.

Showed wife what foodstuff were there and she was amazed.  When I mentioned it before she was always just interested in finishing up today .  Advised her we could lock the doors and not leave for a while of days and dinner would be monotonous some but still there.  She asked where the water jugs were and I showed her the pool chemicals and ponds.

Amazingly she was alot more interested than I anticpated.

Sometimes the wife just surprises ya.

I would still suggest getting a filter calcium hypochlorite doesn't kill all nasties.

To second what Burt said but from a different angle, water quality is greatly improved with a ceramic filter. The interwebz are lousy with how to articles that show you how you can make family sized setups in the cheap.
