I got my first raised bed built and started robbing dirt from the city easement behind my house, then it started raiing and probably will all day.

Got it done and planted today.  Something I've been lacking on and I feel I have taken a big step forward.  In a world where the government can try to deny access to the ocean and arrests people for catching rain water, arable soil could easily become more valuable than gold overnight.

I just came back from the practice of the land navigation course I did.
It was really cool, there were 3 teams that had to reach 15 checkpoints, and put a stamp in the control card in each of them.
Climate was awesome, although I got a bit sun burned, I was running in the hills for 3 and a half hours.

In a few hours I'll do lesson 2 of the Morse Code course for my HAM license, CW sucks.

That's 1647 feet in America...

My house is at 4,600 feet or 1,402 meters and I live in the shadow of the Manzano Mountains with peaks ranging from 9,450 feet or 2,880 meters to 10,098 feet or 3,078 meters.

Sorry to hear about your hills  :P

Instead of thinking "what a beautiful landscape"... all I can think while looking at those pics is high powered optics?  Is that bad??

That is beautiful country out there.  It really is.

Florida is so flat, oh and swampy, oh and mosquito infested.

One of these days I'll make the jump to Arkansas.  But then it's ticks and chiggers.

At least out there where you are all you have to contend with is grizzly bears, mountain lions, and wolves.

Why do you think I'm always putting down the AK??

No grizz Pilgrim but we do have Brown and Black Bears, Mountain Lions, Wolves, Coyotes, Badgers, Bobcats, Mosquitos, Ticks, Sand Fleas and crippling poverty.

I echo JM's thoughts on your regular contributions to the forum. Thanks for all you do.

This weekend I started the process of getting the house and property ready for winter while the weather is still decent. Love autumn in Wisconsin.

FINALLY, the XXXHill Irregulars met this weekend to do a whole host of things like:

1) Brainstorm on what as a group we need to do to become closer to prepping nirvana. The next 5 things we are working towards are;
    > H20 Reserve
    > Fuel and appropriate lubricants
       Petrol
       Diesel
       Transmission fluid
       Hydraulic fluid
       Kerosene
       Etc
    > Basic First aid/ Procedures/ Meds
    > Defense / Offense systems
Weapon systems and support for the systems
       Communication
       LP/OP
       NVG's
       Ammo
       Etc
    > Spare parts for existing system and tools to make repairs or for upkeep.
       Chain saw
       Tractors
       Fire arms
       Toilets
       Starting batteries
       Filters
       Etc
2) A day off shooting. Not just the guys but the young ones and women from the Mntn.
3) Comradery amongst prep driven folks (Not necessarily the same political mind-set by the way  ;)) that climaxed with a big dinner that everybody
    contributed too this evening.

These next five things from the group may not be YOUR top five however we have already reached a level of preparedness to move to the next five as listed above.

Slowly but surly we move to preparedness nirvana with the help of our neighbors.

Today I purchased water, food, and some 9mm HPs. I converted my "grab n go" ammo cans pistol caliber to 9MM from 40 S&W.

Thanks' for the thoughts- I don't do much besides posting what I'm working on. With my you tube account etc it's really in my best interest.  I get plenty of good ideas from this forum.

Well I bought a 9MM Glock and have put maybe 1000 rounds through it so far and plain and simple I'm a more affective shooter. The greatly reduced recoil gets me shots on target much quicker. Putting that one accurate shot out hasn't changed of course. I'm no more accurate with any caliber then the other. But I'm able to just dump mags into targets with 9MM. When your so scared your jerking that trigger everywhere the last thing you need is heavy recoil aswell. And 40 VS 9mm in todays world has nearly zero ballistic advantages. Its just not worth the recoil.

Some may say its a training issue if you can't shoot 40 fast. Its a fact that the time spent in recoil is longer. With a 9mm there is just a slight flip of the muzzle in your grip. With 40 its easily double the recoil.

Plus I had to sell my G23 to survive lol..

Thank you Ken for responding.

Personally I would take the 9MM over the 40 too. The 40 for me was tooooo SAPPY and I had a hard time coming back on target quickly - Most likely me.  With that said, the .45ACP was easy to come back on target for me hence I am a 45 or 9MM guy.

Ya I can't say there's anything wrong with 45 either. It does recoil more then 9mm in my experience but they are both low pressure rounds as apposed to high pressure 40.

Garden duties:

> Picked the last of the cucumbers. They will be used for dill pickles.
> Hand turned the garden with a spade, working compost into the soil.
> Planted garlic. A few weeks late but it has been warm of late.

I am going to do a little research on 'winter carrots.' If it makes sense, I will plant some and see what happens.

NOAA is calling for snow this evening.  Winter is coming... Eat your heart out you FL. folks  ;)

Yesterday I finished my first batch of dehydrated potatoes (in the morning) Last night I cooked up a meal -potato cabbage soup (with onions and carrots) entirely from dehydrated food.

I am firmly of the opinion that, after getting canned good rotation going and some stuff put away in mylar, dehydration is the next best "bang for buck" food stroage method that any prepper should explore.

And Carrots came up in my first raised bed.

I agree that dehydrating is a great way to preserve food. I have done blueberries this year, (they turn out like raisins), tomato slices, beef jerky, summer squash, apple slices (great treat for my son), about to do onions, and with 100lbs + potaoes would like to dehydrate some of them.  Currahee, did you have to blanch the potato slices before dehydrating them? I had read that they could turn blackish if you don't blanch first. Also, using a vacuum sealer after dehydrating is the next step in keeping food safe to store long term. At least that's is what I do.
