Nice, I'm going to be starting paramedic class this fall. Focus on the practical skills, As long as you pay attention in class you can wing it on the written tests.

I just bought a dirt bike, Not too prepping related except for a last ditch scenario.

Ordered 100#'s of hard wheat seed!

This has been a two week project as I kept ending up at dead ends. The farmer across from the cabin and I have been wanting to try our hand at planting hard wheat seed to be mainly used for bread.

First off, finding a local place to buy wheat seed was tough as nobody carried it nor wanted to order any for us. Then I ran across a great guy via the internet who lived about 20 miles from the cabin that sold non GMO seed but didn't nor could he get hard wheat seed. He suggested that I contact someone in the Penn State Agriculture department.

Well that in it's self was tough as nobody would return my phone calls and one email I sent got a Professors feathers all ruffled because I addressed the email Mr. rather than Dr. Gee wiz! Well being persistent payed off (The squeaky wheel gets the grease) as I finally got to speak to a PROFESSOR who explained to me that good quality hard wheat was grown out west not in NE PA. I poked him a little by saying the colonists grew hard wheat and made bread with it so what's the problem. He told me he would get back to me.

Well he emailed me with a lead and suggested I try "Glenn Hard Red Spring Wheat". He also asked that I contact a local Organic Growers and Information Sharing co-op which I did to find who sells it and get pointers on growing and harvesting.

Well the President of the co-op got back to me and told me she was picking up 500#'s on Sunday and did I want any. I ordered the above mentioned amount. The price was $25- for 50# bag.

I will keep you periodically informed about our 1/2 acre planting experiment.

Now I have to research how to plant it before I talk wheat growing with Mrs President.

Wildwood flower grew wild on the farm, we didn't know what it was called. Some said it was a flower, some said it was a weed. I didn't give it much thought. Oh wait, you said WHEAT!

hj,
you could always send a sample to Penn State Ag. department to figure out what the variety is. I have sent them water to analyze as well as soil samples.

So that's what you kids are calling it these days, ANALYZING ? Back in my day, we called it EXPERIMENTING.

Planted another apple tree, six raspberry bushes, jalapenos, and started a new 30'x30' lot for more veggies. Tomorrow it's transplanting some scuppernong grapes, starting some rootlings, planting six blackberry bushes, and another five blueberry bushes. Then.......icing my back and taking a muscle relaxer.  :-[

WW, good work.

I still have a pile of snow on top of my future garden plot, but the wife has started out various herbs in the kitchen. Got a $30 gift card for Jungs, so going to go seed shopping soon.

Money's a little tight, but when I get a chance I need to put together a few raised boxes. I'll take some pictures for you guys and write up a how to. I'll be putting a hinged lid on them with a framed acrylic sheet. This would be a great investment for those of you up north.  Believer it or not you can still grow certain veggies all winter long. I think I've mentioned in the past I plant usually three times a year. Spring, mid summer, and early fall.

I replaced the pull-start rope on a lawnmower with 550 paracord, and bypassed the broken safety-shut-off cable with a zip-tie.

I know it doesn't have much to do with prepping... but if it weren't for prepping, I probably wouldn't have a spool of 550 and an assortment of zip-ties on hand.    O0-engineering with prep supplies is awesome.

Planted more grape vines, rhubarb, melons, and another apple tree. This project is turning in to a mini farm  :))

Oh, and lesson learned the right way. When gardening wear gloves. I was filling up a couple raised beds yesterday and looked down next to my hand to see I had an audience. A large brown recluse spider. Luckily I was wearing gloves. Otherwise I think I'd be needing a trip to the doc's.

YIKES!

I think I wrote at some point on this forum that my sister in-law was bit on the leg by a spider. She ended up in the hospital for a couple of days with some very serous swelling.

On the other note: Drove back to RI from Philly today and stopped by the local mom & pop gun store on the west side of the state as I passed through to get to the eastern side of the state.

I bought a box of 300 Savage and .35 Rem Leverevolution ammo. I tried to get two cans of 3F BP but he "claimed" not to have any. Based on his body language I think he was BSing me thx to what happened in Boston yesterday. He never asked me what size granules I was looking for just, "Nope don't have any" followed with, "I don't know when I will get any in the future." I guess I will have to buy some on the internet.

The deer ammo I purchased was $29.95 and $33.95 respectively which is what I spent about a year ago BUT, his hot ammo like, 9MM, 45 ACP, .223, etc was way OVER THE TOP. 9mm was $29.95 for a box of 50 and the other two were basically selling for $1- a round.

He also had two end caps each packed with 30 rnd 5.56 mags. One end cap was PMAG and the other was aluminum mags with teflon followers. His price was $49.95 a piece!

I hope the bottom falls out of the market and he gets stuck!

Planted 6 rhubarb plants, fertilized the apple trees, planted another blueberry bush, more lettuce, onions, garlic, carrots, radishes,  and watermelons. Fertilized the crops and now to sit back and enjoy the next week of rain.  8) All the transplants I did this year are looking great. Not a thing went back in to dormancy.

Also been doing inventory and organizing myself. Basically spring cleaning, but it always helps. I need more tp, but I'm sure you can never have enough.

The farmer across the way from the BOL showed me his new (to him) New Holland 95 HP tractor, 3 bottom plow, disck-er, hay rake and sickle bar.

May not mean much to the group however we are on our WAY!

Pretty nice man. I'd love to get a tractor. My cousin has my grandfather's up at the farm, but I could probably put it to better use here than he does there. He only uses it for mowing. Wait, did I say uses it? I mean he knows he can use it  for mowing. Sorry, slightly disappointed with the state of the farm currently. My Pap never ceased to amaze me. How a man his age did it all  :o and AWE. How a 33 year old can't do half?  :-[

My running sucks, I need to go out more often.

Wife found a brand new campfire coffee pot for $5. The giant ball of dirt/ice finally melted in my garden plot, so I started to prep that for tilling and fencing. Have a bunch of stuff already seeded and growing in our sun room. Built a large compost bin.

Got a bunch of transplants for some guys to start their gardens. The weather is really screwing up the growing season though. In the 16 years I've lived here it's never been this cool this far in. To top it off it's been just warm enough to get the inch worms out and the are terrorizing the poor trees which have barely made it out of dormancy.

Putting up some split rails this week and putting in a few 30' rows. My back is finally starting to get better. FINALLY!!! So hopefully I can catch up on some much needed prepping. Also planted a ton of marigolds, zinnias, and cosmos. That whole companion gardening deal  ;)
