I have a 2002 dodge 3500 with a v10. 26k miles. its a beauty and a beast.
I need to change my kids schools and pay for it. I cant afford to drive the dodge as I live in the mountains and commute to the city. What vehicle would you recommend? I get lots of rain and snow usually. I'm thinking a used outback, like a 1998 or so. I need AWD. I don't want to get caught off guard so I'm thinking a wagon as I can keep some gear in it.

why not go for a small SUV?

them subarus are pretty crappy in the snow compared to any other AWD i have been in

I being a chevy and ford fan, have found that a toyota, tacoma in 4x4 is quite a little beast. just a thought.

fuel milage is really important as my comute it 60 miles round trip.

when i was living in the mountains of NC the subaru's were really popular, i had one for alittle while when i first started driving hell of a good car. why so old though? 98 that thing is 14 years old and if you get alot of snow probably a rust bucket. If you get one before you buy make sure the timing belt has been serviced recently and water pump.

all i know is the folks up in the mountains i know that had subarus all sold em cause they aren't very good in the snow
(compared to the jeeps, and other small suv's)

The rub is that Suburus (or any passanger car for that matter) don't do very well in DEEP snow which is why dudes like MountainRedneck like their jacked up pickups. I know where dude is going to be driving and the snow never gets very deep. The main concern is slick roads i.e. packed snow and ice.

I think a Suburu would be just fine but I also think that any front wheel drive front engine car would do fine. It isn't too bad after all it is New Mexico we are talking about.

Anything that you think you want to buy needs a serious test drive.

I would top off the tank and drive to Santa Fe and back then top the tank off again so I could run the milage. That is what your number one selling point is, right?

Whatever you buy get the biggest engine option! I know it sounds crazy, but when you look at the weight to power ratio gas millage will stay about the same(unless your talking something with a v-10). I will use a ford explorer as an example they had 3 engine options 1 v-8 and 2 v-6's (5.0, 4.0, 3.0) the 3.0 and 4.0 due to the lack of power get the same milage in realworld conditions as the 5.0. Same goes for trucks,vans, and larger suv's.

I just got a subaru forester a few months ago. I have taken if off road plenty of times since then. As long as I don't need to do anything crazy like rock crawling, I feel confident to take it anywhere. No experience in snow though, since I live in Phoeinx.  :D

I do love it though, great mileage, drives like a car, and has a lot of power considering it's a 4 cylinder engine, and has plenty of room in the rear.
