Getting Started
« on: November 18, 2015, 02:46:59 AM »
Since I am a newbie, I have some questions in general

1. Why did you start prepping?
2. What was the first thing/ Step taken?
3. Is there a plan/ checklist?
4. Survival is one thing after "doomsday" but what do you do during a time where mayhem will be the flavor of the day? Do you run, stay, hide, fight?
6. Go it alone with just your family or do you join groups of other people?

Like I said, I am very new to all this, apart from trying to avoid being caught of guard I still do not know what's the first steps towards being prepared for what ever may or may not happen.

So I was thinking it might be a good idea for everyone to share some of their wisdom with the forum.

Reference #6  Networking and numbers and reinforcements are critical.  30-40 folks  carrying knives and clubs from the local area with kids who have not eaten in 3-4-5 days will be dangerous unless you have a high wall stone castle with a moat full of alligators.

That many should be able to get one close enough with a molotov cocktail and really get you outside.  You may not take much with you either and then you will be in deep doo doo.

Response in Bold:

1. Why did you start prepping? It started when MrsMac and I moved onto our sailboat to live cir. 1987. We
    became self sufficient and mobil.

2. What was the first thing/ Step taken? Making a list, prioritizing that list and then getting a second job so we
could afford the items we needed to buy.

3. Is there a plan/ checklist? Always. As an example, I have posted our one year food list somewhere on this
site. Similarly I have posted other lists here too.

4. Survival is one thing after "doomsday" but what do you do during a time where mayhem will be the flavor of
the day? Do you run, stay, hide, fight? Tough question to answer because what is right for us may not be
right for you. We purchased property in 2005 after a pretty aggressive search. Then we built a small
bunkhouse. Five years after the purchase of the property we built a 1,500 sf cabin. As I have written ad
nausem; The world has to worry today about three things. Economic failure, Middle East strife (ISIS/RUSSIA
/Iran) and domestic terrorism. One probably your or my country can deal with but not two or more.

6. Go it alone with just your family or do you join groups of other people?Strength in numbers whether you
bug out or weather the storm (s) in place. An example: If you have an average family unit of lets say 3-6
you will NOT be able to defend your position against one (1) sniper. You will need a min of one patrol roving
around miles outside your property to keep the zombies away. A typical patrol is made up of 3-4 people and
they would be on patrol for several days at a time. Once back behind the wire a new patrol would need to go
out. Gardening isn't easy. You will need ~ one (1) person to maintain each 1,000 sf you have in crops. With
that written you will need 1,000 sf under cultivation per redoubt member. Also keep in mind that a half a steer
will feed 2-3 people for only 6 months. How many people are needed to manage your cattle, goats, sheep,
    rabbits, chicken, etc.

PrepperMomZA I realize at first glance this looks daunting, however it can be done. Make your list, prioritize your list and get started. The toughest part of any journey is the first step. You eat a elephant one bite at a time. Don't dally.

You may be opening a can of worms here.

1. Why did you start prepping?
A: It was something I was raised with. My father was an officer during the border war and although he never spoke about it (still doesn't, except for the terrible food) that type of military thinking was in our up bringing. I grew up with a weapon in my hand, watching my father stock pile the garage. It wasn't a talking point, I just thought all families lived that way. As I grew up I noticed the state of the world and started to think for myself that I don't want to be caught with my pants down if SHTF. 2008 I was hit pretty hard financially and that's when I realised I hadn't done nearly enough and started to up my game.

2. What was the first thing/ Step taken?
A: As I mentioned I was taught from a very young age so it's hard to say what my first step was (it was possibly my first actual steps :-p ) I also used to spend the weekends with the Scouts so picked up many skills there as a start but if I think of my first conscious decision it was probably studying. I spent HOURS per week in the library (this was pre-internet) learning about herbs, Bush survival, civilian life during the world wars, primitive weaponry etc to get an understanding of how people survived without everything that we take for granted.

3. Is there a plan/ checklist?
A: Definitely. My entire life it's built around prepping, from my location to my jobs to the people I associate myself with. Each one has it's place in my plan. Checklists are essential because you will go nuts without them.
Daily tasks, skills you want to learn, pantry supplies, BoB contents etc etc.
Around the forum you will find countless lists that members have posted to give you an idea.

4. Survival is one thing after "doomsday" but what do you do during a time where mayhem will be the flavor of the day? Do you run, stay, hide, fight?
A: I believe this is a highly debated topic. My personal opinion is that it is best to get somewhere secluded BEFORE SHTF, if possible.  Otherwise prepare to lock down for at least 3 weeks (it's widely considered that this is the time where things are the most chaotic) but be ready to flee if you can't defend. Stay under the radar and only confront if left with no option.

6. Go it alone with just your family or do you join groups of other people?
A: Increase your numbers. Preferably have a team set up that you know you can trust so that when the time comes you can stand together. Not only are you physically stronger in larger numbers but everybody that you meet knows something that you don't so it expands your skill set.

At the end of the day you need to remember your essentials. Food, water, shelter, heat, security. Or alternatively; Beans, bandaids and bullets. How you get there depends on what suits you and your environment best.

1 Why did I start prepping?
When I found this site and others sites and relized I wasn't alone with my thinking that The SHTF is coming.

2 What was the first step taken?
I started reading and seperating the BS from reality. There is no BS or elitism on this site

3 Is there a plan/check list.
Yes. Every week I buy something for my stash. A can of vegatables, beans or rice, also I buy a box of ammo every week. Plan to defend you and yours, but most of all don't tell anyone about your stash who is not like minded.

4. Survival is one thing after "doomsday" but what do you do during a time where mayhem will be the flavor of the day? Do you run, stay, hide, fight?
My wife and I are to old to run so we will fight. I have one neighbor that I trust who will also fight the others will be gone in a flesh.

5 What happened to number five

6. Go it alone with just your family or do you join groups of other people?
It's best to be in a group but the group must be assembled before SHTF. Someone has to be the leader, rules and ingroup laws has to be agreed upon. The first argument will be what to name your Tribe.
In principle, no less than in practice, socialism is the ideology of thieves and tyrants.
