in the next 3 years? Story seems pretty fair and accurate but I am not so sure of the source. I have learned that many of the British news sites are more like a National Enquirer. I will defer to gadget to confirm but this one seems to fit that category. But I did not find an article about Prince Charles being from some delta quadrant planet.

Fears huge solar storm to wipe away life as we know it in three years
By Douglas Patient / 30th November 2016
LIFE as we know it may be destroyed by a devastating solar storm which is increasingly likely to hit by the end of the decade, an expert has claimed.
The catastrophic event would leave the world without internet, phone service and even electricity.
Pete Riley, senior scientist at Predictive Science in San Diego, California, has predicted 12% chance that Earth will be hit by a storm by 2020.
He said: “Even if it’s off by a factor of two, that’s a much larger number than I thought.
"Initially, I was quite surprised that the odds were so high, but the statistics appear to be correct.
"It is a sobering figure."

Don't think I'm going to run and cash in my 401k on an article by something called the daily star. Hahaha

Yep the Daily Star is indeed an Enquirer type of paper.
They seem to love these types of newspapers a great deal over here.
Even the mainstream papers need to be taken with a grain of salt much of the time over here.

The Daily Star was a prototype for the US's National Enquirer, Star & National Examiner.
They seem to be carrying on their traditional form of journalism :)
i think one endearing term for it (and a couple others) was 'Fleet Street Rag'. After an area of London they (and more main stream papers) were published.

We are probably overdue for a solar storm regardless of what you think of that rag. The event could happen anytime.

I fully agree we are due for one......

I cannot disagree with the overdue part. But hopefully it will get some mention national media and the word get out around here. And if it don't, well you all know what that means.

I seriously doubt the government or the news media would tell us if there was a dangerous CME. There would be unimaginable panic if they did.

i agree we're overdue. I just wouldn't set your clock by their reporting. an X class CME or SME would be the proverbial 'low probability, high impact' event. I also agree the .gov wouldn't be too quick to share.
i think by the statistics are about a 1% chance of a carrington type event per year. I think the NASA paper used 12% per decade. BUT that doesn't equate to a 24% chance on the next decade, its still 12%.

iff your really bored, give this a gander check problem 94.https://spacemath.gsfc.nasa.gov/ (https://spacemath.gsfc.nasa.gov/)
NOAA figures a max lead time for an earth bound CME at under 24 - 48 hours depending on the type(s),

18 hours notice of an incoming serious EMP to this bunch? Hail by the time it got here we would be sitting on the porch with beer and waiting on the light show.
