Surveillance Video Shows Intruders Poking Around House as People Slept — and Then the Moment a Woman With a Gun Woke Up

A homeowner in South Africa not only captured footage of intruders robbing him while he slept, but also the moment his girlfriend woke up and opened fire on them.

According to Craven Coetzee, the man who posted the footage on YouTube, the incident happened in Port Elizabeth early Tuesday morning.

The slightly more than six-minute-long video shows a man slowly coming up the stairs, peeking and starting to tiptoe around the home. Two other men follow. When the video shows a different vantage point, you can see Coetzee sleeping upstairs in a loft and the intruders poking around downstairs.

“My girlfriend asked the guy to identify himself — she shouted ‘Craven?’” he wrote. “The guy then moved towards her — this is also off camera as the doorway is on quite a large landing.”

At the first shot, you see some sort of debris sprinkle down in front of the camera. Then the woman rushes out, holding the firearm in front of her, pointed toward the intruders outside of the camera’s field of view. She fires another shot.

Alwin Lebans, a spokesman for the local police department, told News 24 the 39-year-old woman fired two shots. No one was injured in the incident and the intruders got away with her purse, which held cash and credit cards.

Coetzee also included a photo of a local newspaper article in his description of the video to verify the situation was real, because some commenters saying it was staged.

WOW! I do not think that those crooks will be coming back to that home anytime soon.

I have a friend who went to Durban, SA in 2000 for the 505 worlds (Two man sail boat). The marina/ yacht club where the event was being held was a armed camp complete with barbed wire around the facility and guards.

Participants were discouraged to leave the yacht club other than scheduled group events where armed guards always provided security.

One day a handful of the racers rented a car and went out on their own and returned quickly when they were overcome by a group of people set on stealing from them and/or doing bodily harm. LOL...Sounds like Baltimore.

Anyhow, my sympathies goes out to the honest, hard working men & women who live in these SA cities.

That's how we do down here. Port Elizabeth is on fire lately. The crime there (which seems to be particularly aimed at women) has skyrocketed in recent months. A few weeks ago a case of a woman who was kidnapped, robbed and murdered went viral. The whole country got involved. It turns out that it was, allegedly, her husband that orchestrated it but the good news is that it brought the potential danger to everyone's attention. I am hearing about more and more women who are getting their firearm license and more people are getting involved with self defense. I'm currently trying to arrange a few complementary self defense classes for the women in my community and hopefully a few seminars to teach people to be more vigilant and about recognizing potential threats and to encourage people to look out, not only for themselves but also for others . Our girls won't be going without a fight.

One good thing (think I'm right anyway) is that the vast majority of city dwelling criminals there have no skills or knowledge of 100 year old jungle living.  LIfe would be alot more dangerous if they did.

I would suspect that very few folks pay any attention to that "bushcraft learnings" anymore and it is truly bad to forget that stuff.

Yes and no. In my area the crime is primarily due to opportunistic local, in which case you would be right but in many of the other areas, especially the bigger cities, a lot of crime is from foreigners. Namely Somalians, Nigerians and on the rare occasion, Congolese which are all war torn of military nations, in a sense and then there are also the Zimbaweans and those guys are survivors. In my home town we even found several cells of foreign militants that were training other foreigners and local for rural attacks.

So at the end of the day what you face depends entirely on where you are.
