Reparations
« on: April 09, 2019, 04:13:21 PM »
So what do you folks think of the concept of reparations?  Many of the Democratic candidates are suggesting that blacks should receive compensation from the government for the tribulations of the first civil war. Personally, I have a few problems with the concept.  I would support it, if the payments went directly to anyone that was actually alive during the civil war.  My ancestors didn't arrive here until the 20th century, so they weren't involved in the civil war activities, so why should I pay for something my family didn't cause.  This is such a bad idea, and it'll certainly increase hostilities between the races.  But bottom line, I see it as a way to buy votes.  Civil War II, here we come.... :shoot:

We already had reparations and it lasted forty years it was called "Affirmative Action". If for some stupid reason a bunch of a$$ kissing liberals want to give money because of slavery then the slave owning Democrat Party should be the only ones paying.

Although I am uncomfortable to admit it, some of my ancestors back then were yankees.  2 were killed in blue.  So I get compensation for their blood for freeing slaves?

Unless you were held as a Slave or were a Slave owner then you are neither owed reparations nor owe them to another.

My own family immigrated to this country in the 1930s, well after the emancipation proclamation of 1863 and the 13th Amendment in 1865. There is no way that because of my European ancestry that any $.01 of my tax dollars should pay for reparations for something that someone with my skin tone may or may not have been involved in.

I agree that pursuing this will only enflame the hostilities between the races and grow the divide that the current Democrat parties policies have been forging for the recent decade or so.

If the possible kin of former slaves( as no actual former slaves are still alive) are to receive reparations then I would only assume that the kin of former soldiers that fought and possibly died in the Union army to free said slaves are also due some serious compensation....

It is a terribly slippery slope to get on.  Once you start to pay someone for wrongs that are generations old where do you stop.  Why are none of the families going to the West African nations that were home to the major slave trade ports such as Gabon, Congo and Angola?  Or will we go after the the Portuguese  because their ship captains that were the most influential in establishing the slaving routes?  Does paying reparations mean that anyone who's family was part of a group that was subject to invasion and subjugation sometime in their past is due reparations from that time frame.  Damn, that is really the history of humans on this planet. Where does it begin and where does it end.

Well written and thought out comments CJS06!

I will wait a bit before I throw in to see what reparations will be. Now the DEM Presidential Primary Candidates are just flapping their gums. It's easy to say...with no plan.

That's the whole idea of it. The democrats are losing the black vote to President Trump. When a man, black or white has a job he has pride he doesn't need a hand out. President Trump has given blacks and Latino's a hand up. The democrats know they will lose some of those votes.

I'm a little confused, why hasn't there been any discussion regarding reparations for native Americans?  I suppose that's going to be the next MacGuffin.

But...but...Vikings and Mormons are usually white, so that'll never fly in today's political climate.

Anybody who thinks I owe them anything can just line up and kiss my butt. I made my way in this world all by myself. Reparations are something that is paid by the losers of a war. As I recall, the United States won the Civil War War so there is no reason for the United States to pay reparations. The world is full of idiots and I avoid idiots every chance I get. :chuky:

My father, (3rd generation Marine Corps) raised me to be self reliant and to always work hard and do my best.  One of his favorite sayings "if you don't take the time to do right the first time you WILL take time to do it again."  My mother taught me to be kind to everyone and to always see to my family first.  They were both very instumental in forming my character for me to become the man that I am today.  My father became an aircraft mechanic and my mother was a stay at home mom.  They both worked very hard to see that my siste, brother and I had what we needed and some of what we wanted.  There was no golden egg or silver spoon and if my siblings and I wanted something out of this world we were expected to make our own way.  I went to college and trade school and became a Paramedic Firefighter and LEO.  I have retired after 39 years of public service and have raised my children in the same manner.  It is shameful that so many think they deserve what they have not earned.  The scriptues tell us that God does not hold a man responsible for the sins of his father and as such I don't feel the need to give reparations to anyone I personally have not harmed.  It is shameful to see what has happened to our country and that so many have been indocrinated with socialism idiology without being instructed on the right path of the fear of God, love of Christ and patriotism at home.  This however has not been without design, for years our system has been killing babies, stealing the wealth or the population, disrupting the family unit and destroying Christian values.  For my family and nation I pray and keep my sword sharp.

So you can't figure out how or even why someone would or could go after the government or you, for something that happened 10+ generations ago?

:shitStorm:  warning may melt snowflakes :shitStorm:

its simple, Judeo-Christian-Islamic ethics.
if the sins of a Parent are handed down through the generations; then the children are morally liable for their parents actions. This paradigm has crept into all legal system's in use where populations are majority JCI.

As an example; a woman breaks a rule and all future generations of women are punished.  Perhaps this is what happens when you build something out of spare parts, twice.
(reference, Hebrew myth, Lilith and Tanakh/Torah or Genesis, Eve)
there are several referent examples in the Tanakh, Talmud, Bible, Quran in several of the Hadiths; of sons and daughters being punished because of the actions of distant relatives.  One yearly celebration remembers killing first born sons because actions well out of their control.  One of my favorite parts is the killing of all the different animals.  I get the dramatic effect but wow.  the version in Nissan is cool - the Bible seems to have toned it down a bit.

so:
A person performs a legal action.
later - after that person is dead - social ethics change.
The dead person no longer has an estate from which to demand restitution.
The descendants, may no longer even know an ancestor was involved.
The descendants evolved with their culture and their ethics have changed too.
The government that engaged in the now socially unacceptable practice no longer exists.
The government that went to war to end the now socially unacceptable practice still exists.
The current government has become more paternalistic over time.  More and more taking on a parental/family role - caring for widows, the sick, orphans and elderly.  Now universal health care.
If you are in a bad way and you didn't do anything wrong - it MUST be your parents fault, the JCI texts tell me so.
Solution, demand your surrogate parents give you reparations.  Sounds much like poking a stick in your own eye - but that's just me talkin.
We rail against honor killings, duels religious wars and blood feuds of all kinds.  All were common place in the past.  Just perhaps we're growing up.  Like it or not, our collective morals have changed since the bronze age.

Both SemperParatus and Kbop make good points.  The societal philosophy of ethics has changed drastically in the last 50 years.  The educational system has made a major impact on the most recent generations.  Personally, I've seen the differences between people educated in a Christian school and those educated in "State" schools.  For example, my wife, her children, and my son, all had their basic education is traditional Catholic schools, and all of them have turned out politically, and ethically conservative, and they've turned out to be good people in the Aristotelian sense.  I remember when my son was young, many people asked why I would go to the extra expense of sending my son to a private, Catholic school.  I replied that I wanted to ensure that he was taught Judeo-Christian values, and I didn't think that ethical foundation was available from State schools.  If the Catholic school hadn't been available; I would have home schooled him.  He eventually did transfer to a State school, because the Catholic School eventually closed, due to lack of enrollment, but the seeds were planted, and he and his classmates all turned out well.  In any case, I always provided him with additional material to read, so he was ensured a good education.

My family and that of my wife are not Catholics, but both families understood the need for a proper ethical foundation.  I also see a lack of discipline today, both in society, and self-discipline.  But that's a whole 'nuther topic.

SP mentioned self-reliance, and that's another important factor.  Today's society is becoming tethered to the teat of government.  Self-reliance is a basic part of Unchained Preppers.  If you can take care of yourself and your family, then the need for government becomes tertiary. Self-reliance equals self independence.  Man, I'm on a roll this morning.  I'll shut up now, and look forward to chatting with some folks this evening on the UP radio net.
