I remember it very well. My parents allowed me to stay up to watch the television coverage....pre cable!

I stayed home from school on Wed, 16th, launch day. The 3 networks came on broadcast at 0600. I was in front of the tv watching. All 3 networks stayed at the Cape all day, with no commercial breaks, as I remember. It was big big doings. I near had a bucket next to me so I did not have to leave TV to squirt. Same thing on Saturday, landing day.
My dad was working for IBM at the time and was on the roof of a building at the complex he worked at, Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville Alabama, twisting antanne and all kinds of stuff to get signals. Thats why I could not be in FL.
But I almost got on my bike the Saturday morning before to pedal down there.

I let my 6yr old stay up over my wife's objections. He says it is one of his greatest memories. Glad I let him see it.

Yupper. The family was summering on Cape Code when this event happened. We watched it on a small B&W screen TV.

Damn, just a little too young.....happened 2 months before I was born. Still one of the most iconic images.
