...I wrote earlier that I have witnessed an uptick of concern from new people coming to the prepper way of thinking. I also feel in my bones that something, figuratively speaking - Is in the air. Have you experienced this too? Are you smelling/feeling it?

The uptick/feeling might be to what is happening around the globe, I don't know. Just writing out loud here ;)

Yeah - a bit of that for sure.  Lots of things all happening together right now.  So much so that Syria barely gets a mention, let alone AIDS in Africa, and climate change is passé….(etcEtcETc)  A lot of whats happening poltically seems to be about end game strategies - positioning for diminishing resources in the face of accelerating consumption and all that. Plus there's rumours from the scientific community that we may be approaching different kinds of tipping points...

Could also just be the expansion of the internet, digital cameras, fear-mongering and sensationalism.

As you wrote TS, "Could also just be the expansion of the internet, digital cameras, fear-mongering and sensationalism." Yup this is probably the case.

Wellie, personally I am stoked that you are prepping for what ever your reasons.  My reasons are no better or worse than another s. Bottom-line we are all doing it and helping others to see and then do.

I'm not sure what's coming but it seems that everyone has a bad feeling about the future. I've been out of action for about a month (work, illness etc etc). Today I was well enough to be up and about so I went to visit all the old haunts, and some new, looking for supplies. They're empty. Alternative power, long term food stuff, tools and defensive apparatus. Everything is sold out or in very slim supply.
I'd rather be crazy than dead.

Thank you all for your opinions.

Today I find myself doing the calculation that I end up doing on a daily basis.

Yes I am paranoid. That is an understatement indeed.

I am today concerned by a showdown between the US and Russia again.

A prime reason for this is the fact that I have been studying the Russian military modernization effort.

I hate to say it, they have really pulled out the stops on their stuff and I am impressed.

There is another facet to this though.

If you look at the US and Russia with an objective eye, you will see something interesting. The russian society is backward in terms of quality of life, yet that means it is resilient. An EMP would cripple the US. I mean this big time. Yet Russia and China would be able to pick up the pieces so much easier.

Does that mean disaster is imminent? Probably not, yet it does bare a bit of thought.

This. Even in casual conversations with people that are not disconnected from the Matrix. I hear certain terminology thrown around that 5 years ago those people would not even consider the idea. maybe its due to a lot of mainstream shows such as doomsday preppers and such that has caused individuals to look into prepper doctrine. but it is difficult to say.

I sure hope that is a typo.  I really do not need any of that.

Whats coming?  Secretary of Defense Hagel fired because he would not agree and begin to enlist the US Military into law enforcement, letting the DHS take the lead over that in the US while absorbing local/state depts and taking over the street uniformed officer ops backed by military where resisted.

Just back from our annual conference and the economist reaffirmed his prediction on the economy:
2015-good year US and stocks, 2016-great year for US and stocks, 2017-good year for US and stocks, 2018 slight positive growth for stocks, 2019-consumer caused recession, 2020-2029= he used the term roaring 20's so lots of growth, 2030-start of global depression, also medicare runs out of money, 2032-social security is out of money forcing 25% cuts on recipients (current law). Depression to last 10 years or so, caused by poor fiscal discipline in most western countries, so that when the depression starts (actually a recession will be the trigger), no country will have the cash to prop themselves up because the treasuries are full of IOU's and a depression will happen.

On the other hand, Karl Rove didn't think much of the predictions, thinks we will have a recession in 2015. Before anyone pipes up about politics, James Carvil presented at our meeting 5 years ago. Interesting to hear all sides and views, that is why I think we are screwed.

Nemo, any facts to back up your thoughts or is it just a gut feeling? It was quite a shock when MrsMac and I heard about it too.

Facts, no, guts going haywire, yes.  Hagel was about the most liberal small size military supporter this country has ever seen.  But he was enlisted in the Army and received 2 Purple Hearts as an infantry squad leader in Viet Nam.

I guess that kept him back from the total edge some.

Every news organization has reported that he was fired and some reporting that that came out about 2 hours before he was called to the White House and specifying that he was "Fired".  No hint of resignation or amicable parting of the ways or any such.

That is firing-- out of a cannon, into a brick wall, while smothered in flaming napalm.

Yeah Nemo we thought it was odd too.

George Will on this evening's broadcast Special Report with Bret Baier made a statement that Secretary Hagel didn't fire someone in Defense That President Obama wanted canned.

Also, isn't it interesting that Secretary Kerry announced on the same day that the Administration was giving six more months to Iran to come to an agreement. Six more months of lifted or greatly relaxed sanctions.

Stay tuned as there just seems to be one crisis after another. I keep thinking:
Pay No Attention To That Man Behind The Curtain...

Oh and yeah there is Ferguson too  ;)

Jmac,
I think business is good, the economy in most areas is improving little by little, people are borrowing again. Jobs are plentiful in the trades, trucking and service industries. Not so with arts related, pet psychology, and fuzzy feel good stuff. It will be  a few years before we get any decent political change.

DMC, sorry to be such a pessimist however with the Fed and other central banks around the globe printing money, I feel that things will end poorly - Sooner then later. Of course I predicted a collapse of sorts in the fall of 2012 which never came about

With all of that written: We as a globe are entering a new "Age." Not stone, bronze, agriculture, industrial, computer Age but a new Age not yet defined. It could be all good or suck like we have never experienced suck before.

I am pessimistic too, just think we are not close to the tipping point, yet. No political party will tackle our debt problem so some form of collapse is inevitable and it will damage most of the planet. Not sure how long it will take to recover, but it won't be good.
In the mean time, I am content to put my kids thru college, shoot the occasional critter for food, keep working and have as good of a life as I can while still being aware of my surroundings.
I mean we all have to live and enjoy it.

Do not worry about things out of your control.
Concern yourself with things you can control...... Family / building tribe, your physical profile, your skills, your equipment/supplies etc.
You will be much happier
