Quality Canvas tents?
« on: March 21, 2012, 08:15:23 PM »
hey guys im looking for a quality tent prefferably canvas something 4 big people and their gear can fit comfortably. i dont know anything about tents just that i dont want one of those modern thin ass pieces of crap. i want something tough. perhaps something that can be split into multiple sections to share the load while hiking between a few guys. the link below is ideal in design minus the smoke stack and huge size the price tag is not. im lookin at the $200 or less range. i know you get what you pay for so i dont expect to get something like in the link below but let me know if you have any ideas.

I was looking into the same thing for awhile and eventually gave in to the "modern" tent for a few reasons.

#1 Lower maintenance and easier repair.
#2 Less weight and ease of carry.
#3 Mildew resistant fibers. Mildew can thrive in canvas.
#4 Cost. Not seen any in the price range you are looking for. My own was about $500 when I was looking and that was pushing it for my wants/needs.

Either way I don't see a tent as a necessary bug out or prepping tool. Does it have it's place? Yes, for instance, my wife and son would undoubtly complain about sleeping under the stars and I'd never hear the end of it. I think the tent is more so a temporary fixture to sustain comfort while building a more permanent fort of sorts. The best advice I can give in dealing with canvas, particularly for what you want to spend, is to look into building your own. They're not easy and it's certainly not instant gratification, but you seem like a creative guy. No doubt you could build a badass one for half the price.  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

that's probably your best bet. you'll still be spending a pretty penny though. (assuming you'll be using an aluminum frame)

I've got two of these bags.  They work great!  That price is less than I paid as well.

Only other things I'd add to that man is a hammock and I'd say you're set.  [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co
They're good for fishing, dragging brush, piling brush for a overhead protection, and keeping your ass dry.  ;)
