Ping Coin
« on: December 09, 2023, 12:17:18 PM »
I have a Neodymium Magnet to do a Slide test on Silver Coins and I have a Scale to make sure Troy ounces show 1.097 regular ounces. That's all well and good but I now have downloaded an app to my phone called PING COIN and you look for the coin you want to test on their list and tap the coin with a hard but not metal object and the ring will tell you if it is real or not. Any Silver Stackers out there are certainly familiar with the Indian Head/Buffalo rounds. Well, that company also mints the one-ounce rounds that look like a Mercury Dime. Since it wasn't on the list, I checked it as if it was a BUFFALO round and it worked. Since I got the Phone App, I've tried to only buy Rounds that are on the list. I mentioned this App because there is a massive ramp up in fake Silver Coins and Bars. The APP is free.

I don't like the way they hold the coin using skin to skin. I have long enough fingernails to hold the coin in the center with fingernail to fingernail. Use something made of wood or hard plastic to tap the edge of the coin. Don't be surprised if you have to check a coin more than once to get a good ping. However, if you test it about 5 times and can't get a good result, then don't trust that coin. As best I can figure, there are 3 gray vertical bars that represent the Fundamental Frequency, then the 1st harmonic, then the 2nd harmonic. I'm speculating here but if I get a solid Fundamental line and a solid 1st harmonic line and almost a clean 2nd harmonic, I'm pretty sure it's a good coin. The video didn't tell you how far away to hold the coin from the Cell Phone but I've found that you need to be within 6 inches for it to get a good reading. OK, OK, I've been able to get a good reading from a foot away, but it was in a dead quiet room. The other day I bought 35 Silver Eagles and pinged every one of them and they all showed good. I only had to re-ping about 3 of them to make sure they were good. It actually is possible to ping a coin that isn't on the list by pinging a coin against every coin listed. Yep, I've got a few oddball coins and was able to get a good ping that way. With that said, I had already done the magnet slide and weight test so I already figured they were good. There also is another test that is a pain in the ass. It's the caliper test to make sure the coin is the right diameter and right thickness. The last and worst test is the eyeball test where you take a known good coin and place it on top of an unknown coin to make sure they both are exactly the same size and thickness. WARNING: Don't try to match up a BUffalo with a Silver Eagle. They will not be the same size and thickness.
