REVEALED: Millennials lack basic survival skills compared to older generations
YOUNG people are clueless when it comes to basic survival skills such as tying a knot or sparking a fire from scratch, according to research.

A survey shows millennials are missing out on practical skills such as map reading or fishing, compared to their grandparents’ generation.

More than half of young adults were unable to tie a single knot and 40 per cent had never swum in open water, despite Britain being an island nation.

The poll, conducted ahead of the London Boat Show, found simple life skills have been left behind with advances in technology.

Researchers also found that most people under the age of 44 prefer to use Google Maps and Sat Navs to get around, but half of over-55s stick to a paper street map.

Just a third of the 2,000 surveyed know how to spark a flame by natural means, with less than a third having caught their own fish or seafood.

Those born before 1950 were also three times more likely to be able to tie a sheepshank knot compared with those born in the 1990s. And the survey also revealed that 44 per cent have never actually been camping.

A London Boat Show spokeswoman said: “Despite the rise of TV shows such as I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Bear Grylls: Born Survivor, young people lack basic survival skills such as building a fire or catching food.”

Totally agree with this view point.

It is very concerning that modern society here in the UK has completely forgotten even the most simple life skills.

What makes it even worse is that the generation that is now passing away (WWII) excelled at making do and surviving.

I suspect that the same brain drain has occured in US urban populations.

LOL. My nephew couldn't hammer in a nail straight if it would save his life. I could tell you stories that proves to me that civilization as we know it is close to its end.

If it wasn't for my 13 year-old neighbor (Remember he got his General FCC ticket) I would just put a bullet in my brain pan and call it a day.

Lighten up guys, it's not all bad. My two sons, two stepsons, five grandchildren and son-in-law will all make it. Yes there are buttery fly's and snowflakes in most   colleges. Maybe I believe this way because I grew up using my hands and worked with like minded people all my life. Yes most aren't preppers but some of them are good enough and smart enough to give it one hell of a run.

I will sit there and watch them starve and I will do nothing to help them. Why? Because they've earned it.

It is a shame that the younger generations here in the UK have such insulated lives.

I for one hope that if something is going to happen, it does while the older generations are still around. To hopefully teach the knowledge that got them through the WWII years and continued rationing into the 50's.
