am I an asshole for just LAUGHING OUT LOUT at this DUMBASS website? "Individuals concerned about their home safety may want to consider storing pepper spray somewhere in their abode. The device has shown to be an effective way to disable a potential attacker and will allow a victim to get to safety.  "

Well it is called pepperspray.com, if it were rapewhistle.com they'd probably say to keep whistles around the house. These people aren't gonna train with it and end up spraying themselves or missing completely, only to end up.....

Kindred, if you do carry spray then make sure you buy some inert spray and train with it first.

Pepper spray, no matter how strong is useless against a determined attacker.  I once saw a mean old Marine just scowl when he was sprayed repeatedly right in his eyeballs ball this, by a police officer, using LEO highest concentrated capsaicin, (the active ingredient in pepper spray).  5,300,000    Scoville Units.  For those of you that are familiar with the Scoville Scale for capsaicin "heat" measurements.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoville_scaleThe marine just straight whooped the LEO's ass after the pepper spraying.  A taser did finally take him down, though.

Pepper spray isn't shit, and is not enough to take down a determined attacker.  Period.

May as well get the whistle out and start blowing.  Plus, a firearm discharging, is much more likely to shrivel an attackers balls then some hot sauce being sprayed out of a can, whether you hit them or not with the round.  But the way I look at it, if you discharge a round you better hit your target.   [URL=http://www.smileyvault.co

I buy a new pepper spray for my wife and daughters every year that is an attachment to their key chain.  That said, I agree with EJR that it will only effectively stop an attacker who isn't sincerely motivated.  Someone on PCP ,whacked out on drugs, or highly intoxicated will not be influenced by it enough to stop an attack.

However, it is very effective in distracting your attacker and providing a moment for retaliation.  I've taught my girls when concerned enough to palm the spray into a fist position,  their car key (the longest key) is positioned so that it protrudes between their middle and ring finger when holding the spray.

If the attacker fails to be repelled by the pepper spray and continues to move in they will instinctively raise their hand(s) into a holding position to block the stream of the spray from their face.  With your free arm sweep their stream blocking arm while stepping in.  Punch their neck or under their chin with your key holding fist.  If they manage to grab your fist or arm place your leg behind theirs and push forward causing them to go off balance.

If you are carrying a weapon the mass of the keys and spray also make them ideal to distract an attacker by tossing them to the attacker while drawing your weapon to fire.  The attackers eyes will instinctively follow the object coming towards him giving you time to draw your weapon with the other hand.  The distracting toss works with anything you happen to have handy to throw.

kindredspirit, I'm sure your class went through several defensive moves.  Just remember that everything takes practice.   :)

I took this class after learning about a mugging in my hospital parking garage.  They did cover several defensive techniques and demonstrated the use of pepper spray by a nice 80s era educational video.  The class was almost all observational with very little practice period.  Mostly... they emphasized being aware of your surroundings... stranger danger kind of stuff.  I think I will look into a more in depth class....   Thanks for the moves.  I can practice these in the mean time.

Crooked... where would I purchase inert spray to practice with?

I took Crookeds comment as a total joke. I had no idea you could get inert spray. Thats pretty funny actually. Lol, course training would be spray and pray rather than run and gun. Set up a kill house. Hahahaha!.

I always carry pepper spray. I've been hit with it twice (no really does mean no, just kidding) and it really sucks, and continues to suck for quite a while. It's no substitute for a firearm, but it gives me something between bare hands and a gun. And I think that having something non lethal that works at a distance is VERY important when carrying a gun, you can not get into a fist fight when carrying, the chance of a gun grab becomes too high. So if someone does not present a lethal threat to you, but you can't just walk away, hit them with the OC spray.
It's better to have it and not need it ...

I like pepper spray for bears on the trail and dogs in the street and .357 for home invaders. I would feel bad about shooting the bear or dogs. O:-)

But i will say in my youth it was fun to mace up the toilet seat at local resturants, and watch the fun happen. Thank god i out grew that phase >:D

Here is my personal opinion on pepper spray:

Pepper spray is definitely a good non-lethal option for some situations, but as has been said by some here, it is NOT 100% effective 100% of the time.  Is it better than nothing?  Sure.  Do I carry any?  No, and here's something to think about.

There is more to carrying pepper spray than just picking up a can and going all Chuck Norris like.

First you need to pick the right spray.  Get the stream and not the cone spray.  This is for two reasons.  It is more accurate and  more concentrated when impacting the target and is less likely to contaminate the airspace itself.  You also want to get the right mixture of chemicals.  I prefer Saber personally but I also get the LEO cans.  Now there are a lot of delivery systems on the market.  I do not like the key chain sprayers because they are too small and may not even be near as effective depending on the ingredients.  I have also seen the little "blasters" that look like water guns or similar, but their capacity also seems smaller and just don't look or feel as rugged as a can.  With the regular cans, you can get a variety of different strengths and chemical compositions.  I also like the units that have dye in them.  I look at those for more of a "look for the asshole with the blue face" effect lol.

The next thing you need is training and PRACTICE.  Know when and how to use your spray effectively.  Know what it feels like in case you get sprayed with it.  Make sure that you test to make sure it works and CLEAN OFF THE NOZZLE after you do.    Be aware of how your sprayer works and how the chemical is ejected (i.e. cone or stream).  MAKE NOTE THAT IF YOU USE YOUR SPRAY INDOORS OR INTO THE WIND YOU MIGHT GET A TASTE OF YOUR OWN MEDICINE.

The last thing you need to know is what to do after using your spray or when you or someone in your party is sprayed.  Learn how to effectively decontaminate for pepper spray.  Also learn what medical problems are common when coming into contact with pepper spray and how to respond or treat them.

All in all, pepper spray can be used as an effective deterrent on SOME situations while it can inflame others.  Train and practice!

Try and avoid spraying the capsaicin based spray in enclosed spaces because you'll get some for sure, IE: car/elevator.
Also cleaning it up is pain, especial if you've got split cuticles.

Well maybe you should get manicures a little more often. ;D
Not to sound like a homo but i've always wanted one...
During dry weather I get some seriously dry chapped hands and if a place like that knows how to stop those cuticles from getting worse i'd go there... :-*

Burt you aren't fooling anyone.  You just like the idea of some girl holding your hand while she works.  :)

I always carry pepper spray for attacks that I can't justify deadly force on. I don't need the county DA  up my ass. Of course once the SHTF I will just use it for food seasoning lol. After I won't have to explain myself to the libatards.
