Nuclear War Survival Skills 1987 edition -PDF.

https://ia800501.us.archive.org/35/items/NuclearWarSurvivalSkills_201405/nwss.pdf   worth a share.

All,

I found this searching for the 1945 version of the US survival manual for air crew (I owned a copy I found in the 90s and foolishly gave it away). From memory I recall that after the first blast rads decay so if the nuke just popped off...you need to be in shelter for two weeks, and only then can you come out 1 hour daily, adding another hour every day after incrementally. You would need to make sure your wearing a mask outside for that hour/ because you can't risk getting that dust in your lungs. You also need to take potassium iodine daily for those two weeks in shelter to keep your thyroid from dying from radiation poisoning. And finally you need to keep doors/windows closed (or plastic over the broken glass) and dust away from your body -dust will case beta burns on contact with skin...you will also need to keep your small children off the floors since dust concentrates and their bodies won't be able to handle the rads -so they will just get sicker and sicker -so they would need to sleep off the floor (hammock, cot or bed). each time you go outside after that two week period, you risk bringing radioactive dust back in to your shelter/ you would need to decontaminate with soap/water each time you come back in or risk getting sick from radiation poisoning (just tracking mud in to your shelter)... immediate killer first is blast pressure wave, fireball will cause the most damage...then radiation.

Radiation : off the card I have today - CPM/ 5-50 normal background. no action needed. CPM/51-99 medium level, check readings regularly. CPM/>100 High level, Closely watch reading, find out why. CPM/>1000 very high. Leave area ASAP. and find out why. CPM>2000 extremely high. Evacuate immediately, report to GOV. - This card I have came with a $99 amazon geiger counter-  www.GMCmap.com -

I'm surprised the USB rechargeable geiger counter still works as it's over 7 years old. I also have a Civil Defense -single D battery unit that should still work, secured in an ammo can.
now some bad news for folks who picked up a mil surplus pro mask - your filters are only good for about four-eight hours exposure, after you've reached that your carrying material that will make you sick in your mask next to your face (porkchop filters around M17 mask)... learned that from NBC classes in the 90s, my fingers still hurt from swapping those filters out! lol. soldiers are going to get new filters at least daily...civilians aren't, so it's almost better to wet a rag and wrap your mouth/nose. if nukes go popping your more worried about dust getting in then chemical agents. so any filter material is likely going to stop dust should be better then walking around with no dust filter.

my headspace is what kind of things, ideas, techniques do I need to keep my little guy safe if things pop off...what am I missing? no resources to build a concrete shielded shelter...

ah -it's getting late, and I found another book -

https://ia802703.us.archive.org/32/items/nuclearsurvivalm00fairrich/nuclearsurvivalm00fairrich.pdf

Chapter 8 - analysis of popular cliches - "I don't want to live-" "I can't afford it"
either way - down loading and reading these later.

google sucks, but can also give you info if used properly and not blocked.

Good night all, and good luck.

Yes! Nuclear War Survival Skills is a (the?) very good source of REAL information about nuclear war, it's effects and mitigation strategies for survival.  It is from REAL EXPERTS int the field, not from guys who watch lots of videos.

A good site for everyone to visit and to READ their attached articles is :    www.ki4u.com

Unfortunately, most of what we 'know' about nukes, EMP and etc. is only the Hollywood version, designed to keep us in fear and ineffective, hence dependent upon those who probably want us dead, anyway.

Prepper or Survivalist ?

A Prepper keeps survival rations for his pets.

A Survivalist  keeps pets as survival rations.

I've been on   www.ki4u.com before- thanks Sir John - I will be going back to that site to see if there is more information I likely skipped over or missed.

Yeah, the ki4u.com site is very helpful.  The owner of the business is active on another forum that I participate in, and he keeps very informed.  I purchased one of their Nukalert devices last month, and it's an interesting and simple device.  It gives you accurate and constant radiation information, and the battery lasts 10 years, which was confirmed by other members on the forum.  I decided that in light of recent world events that now was the time to buy.  I'd been deferring the purchase for years, but it seems like there unfortunately might be a need for it.

Kearney's Nuclear War Survival Skills should be on every survivalist's bookshelf, along with Life After Doomsday.
