NCScouts, Recon & Surveillance Class in NJ
« on: March 22, 2019, 10:25:55 AM »
Just a friendly reminder that there is a R&S class put on my NCScout in Northern NJ the weekend of April 6th and 7th.

I suspect you can not sport loaded 30-round mags or your 100% tweaked out AR but the class was never about weapons anyway. It is about the theory behind R&S then executing on the skills you learn in the class. Follow-up practice post the class is what will make the training jell with your team (s).

For more information contact NCScout through his site Brushbeater.com, his PM address here on UP, or NJDFT.

Patriotman will be going to the class so he would be a good guy to PM too for further info.

Okay ladies and gentlemen,

I just got in contact with the NJDFT and got a few questions answered.

Out-of-state folks: If you do not have a NJ Firearm ID card you will not be allowed to enter the state with your primary or secondary even if it is NJ compliant.

The gentleman I am conversing with via email, wrote me there would be available, for a small rental fee (I do not know how small) air-soft rifles. Personally I would take him up on it.

Leave your magazines at home as they are all probably illegal - LOL.

I will find out if camping is allowed at the venue and if propane or alcohol cooking is permitted. I am sure since it is NJ, no open fires are allowed.

More to come.

The final poop on this class.

I just hung up with the Coordinator of this class and here is the poop (Intel) on it.

The class will be at a private facility in northern NJ. It will be the same class Patriotman and I took down in NC several weekends ago. It will be a 24/2 class so you will be sleeping onsite. There is a fire pit but most folks will be eating MRE's and or freeze dried rations. Propane and alcohol stoves welcome.

Let me give you folks a down and dirty agenda for the two days.

> Introduction
> Moving through a hostile area
> Normal 3-4 man patrol format
> Setting up a hide
> Setting up and using comms to the TOC
> Contact drills
> Then at night, an abbreviated session on what you did during the day. Red lens flashlights are a must. If you
have NOD's or FLIR bring them.
> The next day an OPS order will be read and teams will be given instructions on what to do next. It will be to R&S
an area looking for X and then to relay information back to the TOC via radio. I am sure a few "break contact"
    drills will happen too. ;-)

I have left out some fun exercises on purpose for the two days. Surprises are always fun!  ;D

As mentioned earlier, if you do not have a NJ Firearm ID card, leave that M249 at home along with your Desert Eagle. Bring an airsoft rifle or you can rent one at a minimal price there. Do bring the following for class during the day/night:

> Camo duds for the two days
> Hat, gloves, etc
> Battle rig minus 30-round mags
> Day pack
> Waterproof pad and pencil for notes
> Compass (Map of the are will be provided)
> HT Radio (VHF) If you don't have one no worries but you have plenty of time to buy a BaoFeng radio from
   Amazon
> Extra socks and foot powder. I brought an extra pair of boots for day two and was glad I did
> Canteen or camel back
> High protein snacks
> Binoculars
> Face camo paint
> If you have them... NOD's or FLIR
> Optional...Knee pads...Elbow pads
> Personal hygiene, e.g, TP, wet wipes, sanitize hand lotion. No tooth paste as you won't be kissing anybody...I
   hope

For staying over which you all will do :-)
> Tent or Gortex Bivi cover with a sleeping bag inside. Army sleep system works GREAT
> Space blanket (Goes under sleeping mat)
> Sleeping mat. Well you really don't need that but at 63, I do
> Sleeping bag that meets the temperature for Saturday night/Sunday morning. Plan on the high 20's low 30's
> MRE's or freeze-dried food. If freeze-dried food then a propane or alcohol stove to heat up H20 with.

Patriotman, what am I leaving out?

Last let me say that the coordinator (Name left out for this post) is a GREAT guy. He has great creds and you will be happy to meet him and start a friendship. The other students that are going to be there from NJ and out of state are like-minded folks and some are local & state LEO's. Good folks to become friends with. Then of course NCScout who is driving up from NC to facilitate this class.

The R&S basics you will learn for a measly $200- is priceless. In my opinion better than what you would learn at MVT - Not taking anything away from Max and what he is doing. R&S is a bit different than being a ground pounder working a patrol looking for trouble.

R&S is all about gathering intel behind enemy lines and passing it along to the TOC. If you have to fire your weapon, then your cover is blown. Make your way to the evac spot and get the hell out of dodge.

There is four spots open. Contact me or NCScout through PM on UP if you would like more information. 2020 is right around the corner. Get the training done NOW not tomorrow!

73 and God Bless

Here is the direct link to NC Scout's course packing list.

Bring a willingness to learn and make mistakes. Leave the egos and hurt feelings at home. Scout is not a drill Sgt and you not be afraid to try it out and make some mistakes - I sure as hell did.

Socks, socks, and more socks. Make sure your gear and clothing are appropriate for the weather.

PM me any other questions or to let me know if you are coming! I will have an AAR regardless.
Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight: My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.

Why not drive 20 minutes and have the event in PA where you still have some of your 2A rights?

And I believe if this is a shooting event it is legal for non-residents to bring their nj compliant weapons to the event as long as they are are following nj laws. But it wouldnt surprise me if they changed it

Fair question Grizz.

This event was originally set up in NJ for NJ folks. The venue had been booked 2-months ago. Well it appears that even though they had 10+ folks saying, "yeah I would love to do this. Bring NCSout up" as of this date only six of the 10+ have given a 100% commitment. Hence, they are now opening it up to non-NJ-ites.

To make it worth while to have NCScouts drive the 9+ hours from NC to the venue and then another 9+ home, the breakeven point is 10. Twelve would be perfect. NCScout and I traded emails last night. He told me he was grateful for the NJ guys to open up the roster and for me posting the open slots.

There have been many NewEngland and Mid-Atl. folks that have expressed to me their desire to take this and other NCScout classes but were reluctant to do so because they didn't want to make a 10+ hour trek to Nc and then back.

This venue would be 4-hours from the Boston area, 1-hour from the Philly area, 1- hour from the Albany area, 2-hours from the Lancaster area, etc, etc, etc.

I would take the class again in a NY minute however, I am picking up my mom for the Easter Holiday April 3rd. And it wouldn't be fair for my wife to elder-sit, while I was off running through the woods and eating MRE's.  :gunner:

Thanks Grizz for asking the question.

Even in NJ with only Airsoft gear it sounds like this is a great class. Unless the specific focus of the class is on shooting skills then there is more than enough to learn in any class like this even without your firearms.  Just reading the class description tells me this is not a firearms class and that it would a great experience without them.

I would have definitely been in on this class with its description and being within easy driving distance of RI, but I leave for New Mexico just 3 days after this class for a 4 Day Alpine Recce class.  I am looking forward to getting into a NCScout class.  I hope Patriotman and anyone else that gets to attend has a great class.

BTW if anyone in the NE area is interested there is a good low light/no light-NODS class being held by Greenline Tactical in NH on the weekend of May 3-5. It is a great opportunity to get an intro to working under NODS if you have the chance. Rental/loaner units are available to those who need them.

That sounds like an amazing low light class. I am definitely adding that to me shortlist of classes to take.

Thanks for the well wishes - would love to take an NCS class with ya.

    What:
This AAR (After Action Review) is for NC Scouts Recon and Surveillence class held in New Jersey. As a disclaimer, this is my second time attending the class (an excellent AAR of the first class can be found here as JohnyMac and I took the same course https://brushbeater.wordpress.com/2019/02/27/recon-surveillance-course-review-by-johnny-mac/ ). He also provided me this excellent format for an AAR.

    Who:
Facilitator NCScout and six students. The skill levels and training experience of the group varied wildly, and it was a great mix of patriots from the People's Republic of New Jersey.

    When:
Saturday – Sunday, April 6-7, 2019. Classes started at 0900 hrs. on Saturday and 0730 hrs. on Sunday. The class ended Saturday at 1700 hrs. for dinner and to make camp and then picked up again for the night portion at 2000 hrs. till 2100 hrs. Sunday start was 0730 hrs. and concluded at 1200 hrs. post an AAR session.

    Where:
Undisclosured location in Northern New Jersey

    Comments:
The class rallied at 0900 hrs. Saturday morning and got straight to work once reaching the training site.

Starting at 0910 hrs. Saturday, a quick review of the next two days agenda commenced.

    > Sample patrol and recon kit overview and discussion
    > Pace count,
    > Principles of camoflage and concealment, inclding Cobra Hood construction
    > Stealth movement - including upright stalking as well as slow crawling with practice of both,
    > Review of patrolling hand signals,
    > Review and practice of Squad travel while on patrol,
    > Proper React to Contact and Break Contact drills,
    > Actual patrol (s),
    > Setting up a rural Hide and OP/LP,
    > Setting up an urban hide site (there were several structures on site that were used for training)
    > Brief review of urban sniping tactics
    > Night maneuvers,
    > Review of camouflage at night,
    > Enhancements to night patrols, e.g. NOD’s FLIR, etc.,
    > Writing an Operations Order and planning a patrol, and
    > Running an Ops Order

Each block of the two-day agenda built on to the next block. The goal was to build a solid foundation for the group to execute on the final exercise or Ops Order Sunday morning.

During the two days NCScout had each three-man team operate as a stand alont unit as well as in support of the other tean.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly in no order:

    > Unlike the last class, the weather was fantastic - sunny and in the 60s duing the day, though it did drop to just at the freezing mark at night. We spent the night in a makeshift patrol base constructed using field expedient materials (the old fashion tarp over a rope, or a bivy sack).
    > MRE’s and little-to-no prep food was the primary food source for the team.
    > As stated before, sleeping arrangements were in field expedient structures carried in our patrol packs. This added a sense of realism and some shared misery (we woke up to some frost).
    > Nearly all segments of the two-day agenda were done with the students geared-up, including primary and secondary weapons.
    > Several of the team members were generous enough to share the use of their low light enhancements such as FLIR and nods.
    > Personally, it was wonderful to spend two days with some fantastic patriots located in my own state. In my other classes with NC Scout, many of the trainees were based in the South. Thus, it was nice to spend time with patriots who live in the same conditions as myself.
    > One of the students broke out a drone and we got a brief look at its use as a force multiplier.
    > The gentlemen who owned the property we operated on was very accommodating and his future plans for the facility are promising and exciting.

Overall, it was a great two days. Because the weather was so bad last time, some of the things we covered in this class were not able to be covered then (i.e. crawling) because there were very real threats to our health such as hypothermia and ankle injuries.

Many thanks to the individual(s) who coordinated everything to make this class happen.

Scout is a fantastic instructor and friend whose teaching method of ex post facto correction of mistakes is, in my humble opinion, preferable to the DI-style of others. Of course, everyone has different styles and preferences so YMMV. While this may not be a trigger-time class, the concepts covered here are arguably as much or more important as they pertain to gathering intelligence without needing to fire a shot. The enemy can't shoot when they can't see....

Don't hesitate - time is running short and meatspace training is essential to your survival.

73, and God Bless

GREAT AAR Patriotman! Thx for taking the time to do the After Action Report.

As I looked out the window Saturday morning with a cup of HOT joe in my hands, watching the snow fall gently to the ground around the redoubt. I was thinking about you and the others of the class rustling yourselves from your warm 'fart bags' to meet the overcast day anew.

As I added more wood to the old Jotul wood stove, topped off my cup of Sumatra and watched the snowy morning clear  here at the cabin, I was wishing that I was in the "wilds" of NJ at the "Redux Recon & Surveillance" class experienced weeks before -Damn!

I am sure Patriotman, you had a great time with some great folks and most important...Learned a 'shit-ton' of stuff. I envy your participation and learning opportunity.

Peace be with you and all who participated. Praying for NC Scouts safe journey home.

We would have loved to have you and you would have had a blast. The environment was awesome. The night was indeed chilly but we were more apt to get out of our bags because it was dry out. As soon as the sun broke the horizon, it started to warm to a beautiful day.

I definitely learned a ton of new material not covered last time.  And the shorter travel time was veryyyy nice.

Hit the sack at 10ish and was up at 12, 145, 315, and 522 until we finally left our warm confines at 540. I definitely learned what works and what doesn't when it comes to my sleeping gear and I have even more tweaks to my loadout.

Also, MOAR PT!  :DrillSgt:

Patriotman, thanks for the quick AAR on the class! it was a pleasure training with you this weekend. Also special thanks to Johny Mac for your help in getting the word out.

The class was very well put together and encompassed a lot of material in a short time frame. I plan to host more classes with NC Scout at this venue in the near future.

Glad to see you joined us over here!

And thanks for organizing every thing too.

Here are some photographs from the course.

https://brushbeater.wordpress.com/2019/04/10/scenes-from-the-recon-and-surveillance-course/

The first hide site was mine, and I think that I am the student in the cobra hood in the second to last picture but I can't tell. These give a pretty good idea of some of the tasks we completed though.

Fellas, got the AAR up on the site. Many thanks for enduring another weekend in the bush Patriotman  ;)

For my own brief AAR, it's essentially this (in no particular order):
- I couldn't have asked for a better range setup or facility. Seriously.

- The place was very reminiscent, believe it or not, of Scout lanes we set up out at White Sands for Recce units from 1AD. The close nature of the bush provides a unique challenge and also reminds me of Recce stories from the South African-Angolan Bush War. The tactics y'all fostered paralleled theirs. Read "Recce" by Koos Stadler.

- Travel light, freeze at night?  ;)

- Handouts. I will have them, spiral bound for the next class. It'll be short, just something with TLPs, basic OPORD layout, immediate action drills and diagrams for the Recce techniques you do in class (cloverleaf, etc.)

- I'm going to add in setting early warning devices via tripwires. I had a few out there, but I haven't used them in any classes as of yet. Its useful to employ them around hides or equipment caches.

Just my foggy thoughts at 0600. Again, I can't thank y'all enough for an awesome weekend. Your collective level of motivation is exactly why I do this. I'd rather teach a couple Recce Teams who will go and do versus spend the same amount of time a thousand people will read and not use.

God bless y'all.

A weekend out in the bush is the best kind of weekend there is  a little freezing makes you appreciate a warm bed

Handouts would probably be good. I have notes typed up from class if you wanted to see if you could build off them instead of reinventing the wheel.

Having tripwires or the dakota alerts would be an amazing addition to be honest.

Thank YOU for making the long trip up. Always a good time.
