Forgotten Prep: Plastic Sheeting
« on: July 12, 2012, 11:52:08 AM »
Roll(s) of plastic sheeting...You'll be glad you have it!  This one item can save you so much trouble in the long run.

Many uses including:

1.  Blocking light from escaping windows.  It's better "they" don't know your in there.

2.  Sealing broken windows.  Whether its a broken pane or sash, trying to heat your area will be extremely inefficient.

3.  Wrapping cadavers.

4.  Gathering rain water.

5.  Use as a tarp.

6.  Numerous other uses I can't remember right now.

These rolls of plastic come in clear and black.  I went with black, extra heavy duty (6 mil thick), and plenty of "double sided duck tape" and "gorrila" tape.  If you have the funds, get some clear plastic too.  That way you can seal the broken glass and still let light in...but also drape a piece of black plastic that can be used at night.

Good looking out!

Another thing that you can do with sheet plastic that alot of folks don't think about it make a room within a room in an attempt to provide better insulation. A 'Dead Air Space' has the following value,

R-value of air space
1/2-inch 0.75
3/4-inch 0.77
3?1/2-inch 0.80
3?1/2-inch, reflecting surface on one side 1.6
3?1/2-inch, reflecting surface both sides 2.2

Not much but when you are in the middle of a Maine Winter (JohnyMac) every little bit helps.

I've even seen someone use a plastic sheet to help reflect heat from a fire back to a person's position, but of course you get it too close to the fire and its gone immediately.
