A lot of people that I meet in the prepping or survival community tend to focus too much time and effort on collecting gear. While having things like a Bug Out Bags, Survival Knives, Emergency Preps and Survival Gear make life a lot easier in a survival situation, all of these things will eventually fail. The one thing that you will always have with you, that you?ll always be able to count on ? is your knowledge.

Unlike gear that can break, get lost or fail at the wrong moment; knowledge is something that you will always have with you. The key to survival really is knowledge; you can have the best gear in the world, but without knowledge that gear is completely useless.

Thinking that you know it all

I have seen this one pop up a lot recently. I have talked to a growing number of preppers who falsely believe they?ll be ok because in their words ?they know more than their neighbors and the rest of America?? They believe that everyone else is going to be so unprepared, that they will automatically be in a better place by default.

While I have no doubt that 99% of the world is grossly unprepared to survive even a small scale disaster, this in no way should make you relax. In fact, I think it?s a good reason to prepare even more. Should a massive SHTF situation go down, those that are unprepared will likely become out of control savages. You are going to need every bit of training and knowledge you can acquire to make it through.

Your survival education should be an ongoing process. The minute you think you know it all is the minute you put yourself in danger of becoming a victim. Don?t ever become complacent, take advantage of every opportunity to learn and practice your skills.

Not Studying and Practicing the Basics

In most survival situations basic survival skills are often what separate those that survive from those that perish. Yes there are certain skills that go beyond the basics, but the basics are the foundation that everything else is built upon.

Not Practicing what you Preach

Acquiring the skills needed to survive in a wide variety of situations can sometime be a difficult task. While reading and studying the art of survival are a good start, one really needs to dedicate themselves to practicing these skills on a regular basis.

Don?t become an Arm Chair Survivalist  ? To really be able to count on your knowledge when the SHTF you need to run through your techniques in a number of scenarios and environments. Simply reading about them is not enough to ensure your safety.

Nothing beats the knowledge that you will gain from practicing your skills in a real world situation. Reading about something is one thing, being able to perform that task in a survival situation is something that requires practice.

heres a couple of rules one could follow as a guide for what I like to cal true preps

Rule 1. Know the terrain of your evac route and bols surrounding areas.
2. Know the plants you can and cannot use for food,shelter, and medicine.
3.know the animals of your ao learn their habits so less energy is spent trapping, snaring,or hunting them.
4.learn the insects that can help and hinder your survival.
5.practice building different types of fires for different reasons such as smoking fires cooking fires and signal fires
6.practice building fires with the bow method and wedge method leave your bic in your pocket. Your metal match in your survival kit.
Use discipline to use your easy equipment (commercial camping bullshit like a lighter or metal match.) Last.save that stuff to conserve energy you don't have later.
7.make data sheets of safe to eat plants satellite pictures of your ao laminate everything Now.

Crow is on it hard. Knowing your AO is huge! Get USGS maps from the local college, they Xerox them cheap. Get them printed in plastic paper at the REI. Walk off the routes till you know them by heart. Meet your neighbors. Let them see you moving around the area.

Get FIT!! Do it now for free. Quit being such a lazy pussy, it will cost you your life and your families lives as well. DON'T BE A GEAR DONOR.

Use the skills you will need post collapse, make fire with friction (it is fucking hard), purify water, cook on a wood stove, cut wood with a hand saw and learn the fault's inherent in these systems. I found out a good one a couple of days ago. My 5 gallon Blitz gas can will not put gas in my pickup truck.. the neck is too short. Would have been pretty fucking stupid to have found that out later and would have really made me look like a chump.

If you take one piece of advise I'm giving it should be "quit being a pussy," every single one of us has the ability to become PT Gods all it takes it the commitment to the cause. Remember that John Kennedy said "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

Think about that while you are running it will last you a while!

All good stuff. I do not use the bow method I use a piece of flint, steel and char cloth.

Char cloth is easy to make and will take and hold a spark very well.

Take an empty Altoids can and pack it with 100% cotten fabric (I use pillow ticking). Close the can and put a hole in the top with a nail remove nail and place can on stove. When smoke stops coming out the nail hole turn off the stove and let can cool. You now have char.

As I mentioned earlier char takes a spar well or a light from a magnifying glass and burns so hot you can light leaves, dried grass, etc. with it.

We all need to quit being pussies. There is no excuse for it, we are simply shirking the path because it is hard. I've said that all things worth doing are hard. Theodore Roosevelt  said "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing."

yes gear does fail eventually... but lets also make sure we dont turn our back on that gear all together... its vital to your survival JUST as much as knowledge is. if you know everyhting there is to know about survival but dont even own a gun "because it will eventually break and i dont want to rely on it" then your as good as dead.. find a happy medium between hippy and pure gear prepper.

Thx Crow I will have to give that a try. If it works as well (I am sure it does) I will also have to see if you can use it for rendezvous (Circ 1775 - 1825) I go to. The participants get pretty into their roles.  :))

At these rendezvous you typically get points that apply to your total shooting score (Flintlock BP rifles only) for: Period dress, hatchet & knife throws, shooting and loading on a run and fire building.
