Oh Crap

I had a strange experience today.

I walked to the corner shop to grab a bit of a drinky poo.

As a was walking back to the house I heard the distinct sound of an Air raid siren going off.

For a moment I almost passed my pants.

The bloody bastard's must have been testing the siren.

To me that sound means one of a few things.

1. An Air Attack
2. Incoming artillery, rocket or mortar fire.
3. (the worst offer fears) the five minute warning of a nuclear strike.

Needless to say I have a bit of a buzz now from drinking a bit to calm the nerves.

Damn I could use bit of peace in the world about now.

Every Wednesday at noon they test the Klaxon here in my village.  The sound is quite ominous... I'll never get used to it.

Here they test it at 12:00PM - Noon every day. It's a reminder to MrsMac and I to turn on the wireless to listen to Rush.  :dance:

We are about 4 miles from the center of town (Population ~500) and if the wind is blowing right we can hear it. The siren is located on top of the volunteer fire company and blows at noon along with when they need the fireman to assemble. All the fireman also carry a pager and many carry a radio. With that written I have no idea why they still sound the siren.

Gadget, do "they" announce in the local paper when they are planning to test the siren? If they don't I can only imagine your concern when you heard it.

I spent 25 years with a volunteer fire department in Va before moving to FL about 10 years ago.  We did the siren test every Saturday at noon.  We did not need it all as everyone had a pager for their belt and a single frequency box at home.  The box got all on the frequency or could be set to alert so it only sounded when our department tones went off.

We sounded the alarm for 2 specific and only those 2 reasons.  It was loud and it was fun.
