Martial Arts?
« on: January 18, 2013, 01:44:37 AM »
So today i started marital arts training and really enjoyed it. Its only 75 per month for 8 classes, 2 a week the moves are no JOKE. I flipped a guy of twice my strenghth on his ass with the proper throw. The classes are a combination of aikido, judo, and karate and its not any of that marketing hype b.s. Im not coming to the assumption that this training will beat anyone up in self defense but its better than nothing. What do you guys think of being trained this way for everyday or in shtf?

Any training is good. I trained a lot when I was younger, and also taught some. Mostly Karate and Kung Fu. Practice practice practice. Don't get in a hurry to learn the harder things right off the bat. A lot of guys want to do the fancier things they see in movies. They get bored and quit, when a month later, their still practicing basic punches and kicks. It's important to get a good foundation, before moving on. Doing things over and over, make them become more second nature. Just like with anything. The fancier things will come, and they'll be right when they do. I've seen senseis fly through the training of their students, and their students look sloppy as Hell. It's all good to learn. Not just for self defense, but physical benefits, and self confidence. Aikido is a neat art. It's pretty slick, and uses your opponents force against himself. I loved picking up whatever Aikido I could. Have fun with it, and never think you're a bad- ass, if others think that of you, that's up o them. But remember, no matter how bad you are, there's somebody out there badder. When guys approached me to ask if I would train them, the first thing I'd ask them is why they wanted lessons. If they said, to get in better shape, or to be able to defend themselves, get more confident or whatever, that was fine. But if they said, "I wanna kick some ass", Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Wrong answer, see ya!

Thanks Hj the best thing about the sensei is hes really nice and a 8th degree black belt with almost 50 years experince. Hes not one of those teachers who think highly of his students like there badasses like a other place in town. Im mainly taking the classes for self defense since this world is crazy but i like being with people with the same attitude as you and theres only like 5 of there since most people in town go to a place where they LITERATLY hand out belts.

Yeah, I've seen instructors like that, that are in it for the money. It sounds like the sensei you are taking lessons from, has his s@#t together. That's why practicing everything over and over to make it second nature matters. In a real fight, things just happen. You don't have an attacker coming at you from a certain stance. Belts are nice, it's good to be recognized for your accomplishment, but I've seen green belts show a lot of skill, and black belts that looked sloppy. I accepted their belts. But I had a sensei tell me that he use to dye his belts, as he graduated up the ladder. He said, all of his sweat was in that belt. I thought that was pretty cool, so that's what I did. I wore the same belt with my gi, all the way through. Have fun, and enjoy it.

P.S. I did wash the belt occasionally. LOL!

*In stereotypical old Chinese man's voice*  You say you wan belt.   Why, so you can look pritty?  Belt holds pants up. You need train, not clothing accessory!
